Sal a 13 year old moves to Euclid Ohio due to her loss of her mother. How would you react to one of your greatest fears? Such as you had to move due to the fact someone left your family. Think about how something or someone externally made an impact in your life. Well in the book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, Sal the main character changes due to many external forces that she went through. Early in the story Sal Experiences one of the biggest external force in the story “Just over a year ago, my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and all our belongings...and we drove three hundred miles straight north and stopped in front of a house in Euclid, Ohio.”(1) This externally changed Sal because after she left her home back …show more content…
Then all the events that occurred during their stay in Euclid also greatly impacted them in an external way. So when their mother left it caused them to go through all those external changes. That was one of the greatest external forces that Sal and her father experienced. Another external force is early in the story when Sal finds her true friend “ I stood there, looking around, and that's when I saw a face pressed up on the upstairs window next to the door. It was a round girls face, and it looked afraid. I didn't know it then , but that face belonged to Phoebe Winterbottom, a girl with a powerful imagination, who would become my friend , and would have many peculiar things happen to her.” (2)This impacted Sal because after her relationship with phoebe grew stronger they hung out more and all those peculiar things that happened to phoebe also happened to Sal because Sal hung at with her which then more and more externally impacted her. Sal also realizes how all these events happen and how they all change her. And then many more unfortunate events are coming
This piece of evidence is an amazing one that I could talk about for hours “Some of the cement grouting between the bricks had to de replaced, and he wrote her name in the new cement. He wrote Chanhassen, not sugar” This is not only an external force for Sal it’s also an internal force, not only was it an actual cement wall that would haunt Sal forever but also a touching piece to Sal’s life.
“Just over a year ago, my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and all our belongings… and we drove three hundred miles straight north and stopped in front of a house in Euclid, Ohio” (Creech, 1). Sal moved away from her home, in Bybanks which she adored very much. But what were the reasons? In “Walk Two Moons,” Sharon Creech uses settings that show significance to the protagonist Sal, by connecting it to how long she’s lived there, features of the setting, and her loved ones.
When Sal left Bybanks, Kentucky, she grew to get used to Euclid, Ohio, overtime. Creech writes, “... my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and our belongings…” (1). Since Sal’s moved unwillingly, she has to grow to accept internally that she’s moving away to Euclid and must leave her home. Next, Creech includes,
An external force that caused Sal to change, is her sister passing away. Sal fell out of a tree when her mom was supposed to have a baby later that day. Sal broke her leg and had to be carried by her mom across the long fields. Soon after that, her mom had her baby and she was dead. After that event, Sal changed in her social life and feelings. She became more scared and jumpy and thought that she killed her sister, which made her afraid of pregnant women. With all that guilt, Sal thought she might have been the cause of her mother leaving.
Along her journey, Sal endured many internal forces. For example, on page 208, it states “All those messages invaded my brain and affected the way I looked at things”. I think this is significant to the story because it proves that Sal grew and changed because of the messages. It made her think more of others, and it made her realize the truth of the Cadaver conspiracy. Another internal force that made Sal change was found on page 262. It states “We walked in everybody’s moccasins,
One way that Sal changes internally and externally is by moving out of her childhood home. She changes because she moves to her new house and it is different from her old house Sal was upset because she didn't want to move to the new house out of her childhood home I can infer this because in the book it says “No trees?...This is where we are going to live?” this quote shows that she is unhappy that she is moving because it is not the same as her old home and what she is use to.
One of the most significant external force that cause Sal to change is that her mother was leaving and never coming back. Sal’s mother says she doesn’t feel like she fit in the family and that she doesn’t feel like a Hiddle. She feels like she doesn’t fit in with the family, and she thinks that a Hiddle is the best of the best. She said that Sal’s father is too good for her and that Hiddle’s are too good.Sal’s mother left because she needs to clear her mind about Sal’s unborn sister Tulip. Tulip’s death made that little family upset. Sal’s mother says, “‘ Oh, you’re too good, John,’ she said. ‘You’re too good. All you Hiddles are too good. I’ll never be so good. I’ll never be able to think of all the things—’” (page 31). This supports the claim
One of the most significant external forces that effectively change Sal is her mom's death. Sal finds out at the crash site that her mother has passed away and she can not see her mom any more, her mom would no longer be with her any more. This is important because in the beginning of the ook Sal was determined to get her mom back by her birthday, but did not get to finish the task in the process. She found the crash of the bus her mom was in. On page 253 Sal says, “The sheriff parked the car and led up a path toward the river, and there, on a little hill overlooking the river and the valley, was my mother’s grave.” As Sal thinks about the crash at the site, she denies her mom’s death and still tries to find her mom if she was still yet to
In the novel Walk Two Moons, Sal Hiddle is an important character. The reason why Sal is so important is because she narrates her life in Euclid, Ohio with Phoebe Winterbottom. The traits that Sal has are unique and is a country girl. By Sal narrating, it show importance by telling her story from her point of view about her time in Euclid, Ohio. The text states, “Two blocks from Margaret Cadaver’s was the place where my father and I were now going to live.”(Creech 10) This quote shows change can be a big impact on life because when Sal moved, it made a big impact on her life like new meeting friends. This red square represents an unperfect life because when sal’s mom left, she felt devastated and when she had to move to a place that is not
What is your biggest fear? In the nonfiction story Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer climbing to the top of Mount Everest is his biggest dream but also their greatest fear. The intense journey of climbing up and ascending down the mountain Krakauer and his climbing companions push through many obstacles including nature, their mind, and fear. Fear is a common theme in Into Thin Air it also occurs in the novel The Alchemist. Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is an inspiring story about a boy named Santiago. He has a recurring dream about going to the pyramids to find his treasure. He goes on a long journey to follow his dreams and also struggles with the obstacle of fear along the way. Fear becomes a big obstacle for Santiago and Krakauer in reaching
All around the world, people try to better understand their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. For example, people comprehend their enemies in sports like football and in any sort of competition. The novel Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson is a book about an empress endeavoring to subjugate a continent called Genabackis, with only Darujhistan standing in her way. As the Empress formulates an idea to take down Darujhistan, and memories of the quandom emperor with it, she finds out it is not as easy as she planned it to be. Along the way, there are many small battles about almost anything, whether it is a card game or a siege, and as a result, people try to be more knowledgeable about their competitors. In
Sal states,”Ever since my mother left us that April day, I suspected that everyone was going to leave, one by one” (pg. 55). This shows that Sal’s mom’s choices created this trauma in Sal’s character. The impact her mom’s decisions had on her was a negative one. Sal now has to live her life with abandonment issues. Also, Phoebe’s actions change Sal’s character and help her grow.
In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech the protagonist Sal must go on a journey with her grandparents when her mother unexpectedly leaves her. I can imagine that Sal would have many fears and emotions about this trip. It is unusually for a mother to unexpectedly leave their daughter and not return. Because she left unexpectedly, there are many fears that would arise from unanswered questions such as: Why did her mother leave? Are they in danger? Did she not want her? Is there something wrong with her? Will she be able find her mother? Besides fears and feelings of inadequacy, she would also have feelings of loss, sadness and grief from being separated from her mother. Her grandparents probably want her to go on the trip because
In the short story “On the Rainy River” by Tim O’brien,Suggest that an individual's fears are powerful motivators along with the ability to anticipate ones action will have on themselves and their environment will often force them to make significant life changing decisions.
One of the most significant external forces that changed Sal was the road trip. In the beginning of the story Sals mom had left her and her dad on an April morning. Then later on in the story her grandparents take her on a road trip to Lewiston so she can see her mom. On the road trip she doesn't want to believe her mother is dead but throughout the story she starts to realize that her mother might be dead. On page 249, the author wrote, “A bus when the of the road here a year ago,” he said. “Skidded right there, coming out of the last turn, and went sliding of this here overlook and through the railing and rolled over and over into those trees. A helluva thing. When I came home that night rescuers were still hacking their way throug the brush to get to in. Only one person survived, ya know.” I knew.” This shows that sal is starting to realize that her mother died on the bus crash. And if Sal didn't want to believe her mother was dead she would have said “no I don't know” instead of I knew. This changed Sal
