External Factors That Influence Identity Development

“Achieving a sense of identity is the major developmental task of teenager.” – Lorenzo Johnson, Ph.D. There is many factors in one’s life that effects their sense of identity that they develop as a teenager. One of the major external factors that could be considered is family and how they influence one’s self-identity. Another external factor that effects a teen’s identity is their friends/peer group. Lastly an external factor that helps a teen development their sense of identity is the way others affect them, how society influences them as a person. Although there are many internal factors that influences one’s identity, there are more prominent external factors that influences one’s self- identity development.

An article called the “The Looking Glass Self” written by Nicholas Morine talks about in one section of his article how friends effect the way one sees themselves. A quote from “The Looking Glass Self” could be “When people receive a negative or condescending response to their appearance from a variety of persons they might socialize with, they might begin to view themselves as less physically attractive or appealing.” This shows that the people we socialize with can greatly effect one’s identity. “Essential to identity formation is the validation of one’s self-image by other people’s opinion.” In the article “A Guide to Teenage Identity: For Parents, Teachers, Counselors & Youth Workers” it also talks about peer groups validations of one’s identity is essential in the development. In another section of the article the author goes on to mention “If they see something in peers that remind them of what they don’t want to be, they will scorn and avoid those people and not feel an ounce of remorse.” This means if one see a quality in someone else that they do not like and would not like to see in themselves they will completely disregard themselves from that type of person. In the article “The Story of Baby X” it goes on to mention how these parents decided to not share the gender of their child with the world because the parents did not want their gender to influence and effect the way their child grew up. This article shows that society’s opinion that can effect a way a person choses to identify not just in gender identity. The “A Guide to Teenage Identity” article also goes on to show and explain how others can affect how chose to identify. An example provided from the article could be “… adolescents will often over-identify with famous people to the point of apparent loss of their own individuality.” This explains that the development of one’s identity majorly effected by society and their
