Should America Stop using the penny
America should not kill the penny because getting killing the penny would be like cutting off your hands. America needs the penny so they shouldn’t get rid of it. According to the spruce.com, “The penny is a very sentimental coin to most american due to Abraham Lincoln on it”. The penny would have to be rounded up to the next cent which is the nickel.
According to the spruce.com, “The Penny is a very sentimental coin to most americans due to Abraham Lincoln on it”. According to the spruce.com, “Americans are traditionalist and the Lincoln cent is the epitome of modern day circulating coin tradition”. If we kill the penny most americans would probably get mad and some might forget

Nickels cost about 6.20 cents to make. According to the spruce.com, making each Nickel cost about 0.60 cents more than making each penny. If we get rid of the penny and start using the nickel for the lowest cent we would always get change back if the cost would be what you by is $2.11 we would not be able to pay with a penny.
Pennies are worthless. According to the spruce.com, “They don’t buy anything, many people just throw them away, and nobody wants to use them so let’s just get rid of them”. Charities need pennies. According to the spruce.com, “Many small charities depend on penny drives to bring in donations”. According to the spruce.com, “People think nothing of pouring out their old penny jars to support these drives, but they won’t part with nickels s easily”. Most Americans use pennies to pay for most of their stuff and donations.
Pennies are an important part of our past and they will be in our future. Pennies are a good thing to help with Contributions to Institutions. The penny would make a difference in your change. You would have to round up 5 cents. The penny is very important cent and we need
"The Penny Debate " by Brad Andrew is an article written to inform Americans about an ongoing conflict. Both sides are supported with good reasons; However, I think It would be beneficial to keep the penny. Based on the article, which implies that fellow Americas would lose much more than we're gaining. Things such as; Getting rid of the penny, Charities ran on coins will lose profits, putting U.S. Mint further in debt, and prices would rise. Many may think that eliminating the penny will be a plus, but aren't looking at both pros and cons in-depth for future references. Rather than getting rid of the penny altogether we could use a cheaper metal to produce
According to Smith and Headley, in the same article listed above, “Nickels cost even more to make. If we eliminate the penny, we will need more nickels in circulation. Nickels cost 7.7 cents to make, (2.7 cents over face value, as opposed to .26 over face value to make a penny), so making each nickel costs 1.44 cents more than making the penny,” so because of the nickel’s cost, any savings from getting rid of the penny is cancelled out. Also, according to Smith and Geithner, The Mint could just replace the materials with less expensive materials. In Smith’s article “Why We Need to Keep the Penny (and Dollar Bill) in Circulation,” they both say “-the answer isn’t to dump either coin. Even Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said last week that his agency’s budget is proposing to change the composition of nickels and pennies to make them cheaper to produce.” By doing this , the mint will be able to solve its problem without eliminating any coins, avoiding any unwanted repercussions from getting rid of
The penny debate has been going on for many years. Many people want to get rid of the penny, but others want to keep the penny. We should keep the penny. The penny is a benefit in our society.
Many penny supporters think there is not an inflation with the economy. The cent doesn't buy anything in today's market. It is merely a token used to make odd change during cash purchases. The customer may have to use the, "Leave a penny, take a penny" bowl next to the cash register for correcting the balance. The penny can be put back into the bowl if the customer doesn't accept the return of pennies. It is neater than throwing them on the ground
On top of not having a use, the penny is a big waste of time, literally. Gore, a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley has made a calculation that approximately “four hours per person per year” is wasted on rummaging for pennies which in turn costs the nation “over $15 billion per year.” (Kahn) These $15 billion could be used to create jobs, invest in renewable energy, or invest in education, all of which would greatly improve the nation while at the same time getting rid of a pointless coin.
When it comes to this debate there are many aspects people disagree about. Most of the aspects discussed have to do with the future of the U.S. economy if the penny was discontinued. The price of making a penny and the effect of not having a penny for normal
Although this may be true, according to The Ever-Changing Penny, the text states, “In 2011, it cost… 2.4 cents to produce one penny… production costs are slightly lower today… just over 1.8 cents to produce”(Story 5). As a result under this piece of evidence, the price of the penny is lowering every few years. The materials used to construct the penny could be changed to more common and cheap metals. An equally important piece of information comes from the article Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?, where Sommer states, “The mint defer to Congress, and Congress hasn’t told it to abolish the penny. Lawmakers have directed the mint to study ways to make small coins more cheaply”(Sommer 3). Provided the information, the mint has tried to reach out the Congress in hopes of getting an answer, yet the Congress never made a decision. In hope that the U.S. Mint does believe that they can create more efficient pennies with cheaper materials, than the U.S. will keep the one-cent
As a recognized part of modern American life, the penny is far too entrenched in our daily life to be abolished. In fact, the effort to abolish the penny would be enormous, and simply not worth the estimated benefits of such a monumental a change.
Therefore, everything will cost more and workers will need to make more money. Right now, everyday things from anywhere are pretty pricey and without the penny they would be more expensive. Sally Ritchie of Retail Council of Canada said, “Our members are not opposed to the proposal as long as the proposed system of rounding is adequately explained to Canadians.” She’s saying that they are capable of making the prices go up and that everyone will agree as long as they understand and are aware of what is going on and why. I find this horrendous because in reality, money wise, some people have it easier than others and if prices go up, the regular working class with suffer more than the higher
That one cent can change into something big. As in source #3 it states, “Washington Middle School hosted it’s annual Penny Drive for charity. Students from every grade brought in bags and jars of pennies, and with everyone’s assistance, they raised over $3,000 in one week!” With a common cause and the penny that is willingly given away, you can only achieve higher. “Michael Cooper, an eighth grader from Washington Middle School, said, “Pennies.. Add up, because they are worth so little, people don’t mind donating them to charity.”” There is power in numbers and if it goes to a good cause who could object?
Pennies can actually reduce your money by wasting your time. “Time wasted counting pennies could add up to over $700 million per year nationwide!” (Mancuso) How does time waste money? Well, in retail businesses, employers pay their employees by the hour, and if the customer or employee spends just two point five seconds counting pennies, thoses seconds can add up and both the employees and companies will be losing thousands (Mancuso). If you have a job, then you depend on it to earn money, but with your tax money going to pay for the expensive penny, and/or having your time and money wasted counting pennies in the retail business, the expensive could cost you thousands of dollars. The penny is also very inefficient and people throw them away, but their throwing away your money, costing you even more in taxes to remake the lost
In Forbes magazine, Neena Moorjani said “It’s practically useless in everyday life” (Lewis). Most people today fling their pennies into the trash, they drop out of circulation, or in couch cushions where you won’t see them again. In the 1900’s there was a thing called penny candy. You could go to a local store and buy one piece, or a few pieces of your favorite candy with just one penny. Today, candy bars from a gas station can cost up to two dollars. Adding to this, vending machines cause problems with coins. The vending machines used to take all types of coins, nickels, dimes and even pennies. If you try to put a penny in a machine now it will just spit it back out or an alarm will sound. In stores when someone says “one second I think I have some pennies” is very annoying. It uses about “...40 wasted seconds per day per person.
The penny has been part of the United states for over 200 hundred years it's so old they used to have the statue of liberty on it and people see it as an artifact of our country. But the penny is still just a waste of time and costing tax payers way to much to make and people just don't want to carry it around anymore. What i want you to do tonight is think hard about whether we should keep the penny or not and have reasoning why u think we should or shouldn't get rid of the
Many countries around the world have eliminated the penny which raises the question: Should the U.S eliminate the penny? We are wasting money and time by keeping the production going so why not just stop it all now? After doing plenty of research I believe the U.S should eliminate the penny. It’s about time America did something that could help us save us valuable time and money.
Mary Landrieu once said “ A penny saved is not a penny earned if at the end of the day you still owe a quarter.” That’s telling us that a penny is worth very little, so why even have them. A penny is just one cent. I repeat one single cent! Mine as well get rid of them they take away bronze, wallet space, or even house space. Pennies should no longer be produced.
