In the War of 1812 some Americans supported the war while others were against it. Supporters believed we had to fight because of impressment. However other Americans opposed the war as it may have led to secession after New England threatened to draw a new border and become their own country. Although many Americans believe the war was a necessity for our country, I believe that the war was a waste of effort and time. Some Americans, such as the Warhawks, believed the war was essential. One reason they wanted to fight was because of impressment. During the Napoleonic Wars with France, Britain wanted the United States to only trade with them. After we declined, Britain was angry and started taking our ships and kidnapping our sailors so we
When the war began, it was being fought by the Americans to address their grievances toward the British. This seemed like a justifiable cause for a war, however not all of the citizens shared the same sense of unity about
First and foremost, the War Hawks exasperated war during the fight of England and France, that’s why they pushed for it. The Hawks were a group of young people from the South in Congress they dominated it during 1811 included were John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay. They felt like this was the “Second Revolutionary War” and had the necessity to fight it like it was. Both France and Britain did not let the United States be neutral during war after provocations from both parts came to them. Britain wanted all trading ships to stop by their ports and France said all the ships in Britain’s ports will be shot down or seized. The Chesapeake-Leopard affair with 4 americans killed and 4 captured was something that set off the Americans for War.The Hawks ignored the wants of the people that were from the Federalist Party in the Northeast and with majority War Hawks in Congress declared war.
The War of 1812 was a war that lasted for two years that helped the United States to firmly and officially establish its independence. After finishing with the concern of France, England turned its attention over to the United States. At first, the United States did not want to resort to war and fighting (Doc. B) but rather sort out their issues economically--because England had seized all ships that did not stop in the British port before heading to their other European destinations, Congress passed the Embargo Act and then the Non-Intercourse Act, allowing trade with all nations except France and England. Then, England refused to allow this trade to occur, so America had to resort to war. The Northeastern Federalists were not in favor of
The British and American colonies both had legitimate reasons for initiating war. These reasons for war didn’t develop overnight but were irritated by multiple reasons. The British initiated war to put an end to colonial resistance (154). They wanted to maintain order and rule solely over the American colonies.
During 1812, there were many things going on with Great Britain and America.. The war of 1812 was a little-known historic event which involved the United States of America and Great Britain. It is important for people to know about the war because the war had many major conflicts that were solved. Many people think that the War of 1812 had a big part in U.S. history and that it was a major event in the world. Although, some people may say that the war was irrelevant. The War of 1812 should get more recognition than it deserves.
I believe the War of 1812 was justified given the causes because one cause was that the British had given guns to the Indians in order to have them fight the Americans on the frontier. The Indian governor, William Henry Harrison, defeated the Indians along with the the Shawnee brothers, Tecumseh and the Prophet, who led the Indian opposition towards America, at the Battle of Tippecanoe. Young congressmen from the West and South known as War Hawks, are stirred from these Indian raids on the frontier and wanted the Indians to clear the land so the whites could settle without fear. This was an important reason why Madison proclaimed war. However, the main cause of the war was especially involved around impressment, where the British continually
I think that the American Colonies were justified in going to war with Great Britain and seeking their Independence. One reason why they needed to go to war was because of the colonies' lack of representation. The colonists had some say in their American government, in which they could vote down bills, make an amendment, or agree. However, when Parliament began taxation on the Americans, the colonists could not vote it down. Parliament had almost complete say for all of the colonies, but did not even consist of a single representative from the colonies. In Conflict and Consensus in the American Revolution, it is stated that the colonists cried out that Parliament, without American representatives, knew nothing about their needs and had
Whether or not the War of 1812 should have happened has been much debated since the before the first shots of the war itself were fired. The War of 1812 was declared by America because the British were violating the trade rights of American citizens. The war went on for about two and a half years until the Americans won. Many people argue that these few years in war were unnecessary. The War of 1812 should not have occurred because not only did it waste our limited resources as a country, but it wrecked the livelihoods of many American citizens.
America was against involving themselves in the war because they weren’t impacted by any of the agreements that caused the European powers to go to war in the first place. They thought war “would sow death, misery, and reaction throughout the nation but also threatened ‘the firm hand of repression’ against disloyalty—anticipating battles at home as well as abroad.” Basically, war would bring on too many problems internally if they were to get into external battles. They also supported neutrality in the war and thought that the United States had no real reason to get involved in the war. President Wilson delivered a statement of neutrality and advised Americans to be “neutral in fact as well as in name… impartial in thought as well as in action.”
The United states were very unprepared for war (Ambrose, pg. 14). In the beginning, they stayed out of the war, hoping it would blow over quickly. Many people were ¨isolationists¨ who saw no reason why their
The War of 1812 was started by America due to British encroachment on three fronts, trade restrictions imposed by the British, the increasing alliances of the British with Indian tribes blocking American expansion West, and due to British interference with merchant class ships in the Atlantic. The war was fought in the Great Lakes region between America and Canada, near New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Atlantic trade routes, and around Washington DC. The British had always considered the American insurrection in the 1770s to be a temporary event, their continued battles within the European continent as well as the rest of the British empire had proven to be too distracting to keep a solid check on North America. The British also had not anticipated a war in North America in the lead up to the war of 1812 due to the fragility of the American states, leading to the hubris Britain retained in its relations with the young United States of America.
The War of 1812 has always been a part of American history not very exiting to learn about for most Americans. It was a tumultuous time for the New Republic and some of the battles of the war shamed the new nation. The War of 1812 did not have the same glorious, honorable, and just cause of the American Revolution. The British made fools of the American people and even burned the Capitol and the White House, the centers of American politics, to the ground. However as shameful as the war was, it also had some good benefits and it demonstrated to Great Britain and the rest of the world that the United States of America was its own sovereign nation, and not some British Sphere of Influence. Although the treaty of Ghent failed to address
It also give a momentous lift to the political or military careers of other men. The War of 1812 looked more to the past then to its future, it echoed the philosophy and problems of the American Revolution rather than exploring new ones. It was it second and last time that America was the underdog, tried to conquer Canada, and the Indians played any major role. The war was unusual in generating such heated political opposition and nearly distinctive in ending the war in a draw. Though most Americans pretended that they had win the war, they could point to a few gains to withstand this claim. It is this lack of victory that may best explain why the war was little
The War of 1812 was a war between Britain and the United States fought primarily in Upper Canada. It had many causes, few which involved British North America. The results of the war include the fact that there was no clear winner or loser among them. The only real losers in the situation were the Natives in the region. They were driven out of their lands and customs. None of the borders was changed by the war, though many attempts were made. The Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war, did nothing to advance the state of the countries. It went so far as to end the war and put things back the way that they were, but the main causes of the conflict were not addressed or dealt with. In order to evaluate the significance of this war,
The Hawks were confident that Britain would yield to US demands if it saw America considering military battle. Any way, Britain was already involved with the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, thus being short on money and men. Ultimately, the War Hawks convinced majority of congress to vote in favor of this "Second Struggle for Liberty". Though a few rebellious congressmen fought over little details, everyone agreed that it wasn't realistic to expect a peaceful and diplomatic conclusion to the constant divergence with Britain.
