One of the current social policies in place that protect the rights of the Deaf and hearing impaired is the Americans with Disabilities Act. (The Americans with Disabilities Act, 1990 ) The ADA is a body of laws and policies that bans discrimination against those with disabilities. This includes the deaf and hearing impaired population. The ADA has four sections that cover: employment, public accommodations, government and telecommunications. In order to be compliant with the ADA, employers are compelled to inquire about the types of accommodation needs the deaf employee has so that they may work alongside others with the least amount of distractions or interruptions.

There are many agencies that serve and provide assistance to many in need, young and old. Regardless of their background, culture or heritage, this includes those within the special population. The one sector that was not specifically addressed in these agencies was the need for independence of the handicapped, the hearing impaired and especially veterans of war who are

Students with disabilities may require accommodations in order to find success. Some accommodations may include additional time to complete assignments and/or assessments, oral presentation of content or instructions, or allowing the student to type work vs. writing it. They are battery-powered electronic devices with small microphones to pick up and increase the volume of sound received by a person. Also, text phones, relay systems and minicoms may be used for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
There are communication access real-time translation or CART this provides another form of communication. “This is when words are spoken, a CART provider, or translator, types them on the computer for a deaf or hearing-impaired person to read” (Dunlap, 2011). There are also assistive listening devices, which are technology aids, the deaf and hard of hearing in many ways. “Assistive listening devices or ALD’s help people hear better in cases of background noise or bad acoustics” (Dunlap, 2011).

At present, our society provides vocational rehabilitation services to the PWID because majority of them feel it is their moral and social obligation to contribute to the lives of those who are deserving of their help. Since about 50 million Americans have some kind of disability, which suggest that in every family we are likely to see someone who is dealing with disability.

A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a job or things related to someone’s job that allow an individual with a disability to perform the essential functions of the position as long as it does not present too much of a hardship to the employer. For example, an employer must make existing facilities used by employees readily
