The Ban
Do you play highschool football? Does your head ever hurt after a season or a game? Highschool
football should be banned because the risk of brain damage is too high for teenagers, football causes life threatening, and brain damage you get at this age carries on through your whole life. These are three reasons why high school football should be banned.
One reason highschool football should be banned is because the risk of brain damage is too high for teenagers. High School players are twice as likely to get a concussion than college players are(Breslow). Even with a helmet in high school football, it still leaves with a 95% chance to receive a concussion(Breslow). Twenty percent of high school players have brain injuries(Reed). Football is very dangerous in high school. In the movie “Concussion”, it stated that 95ps to your head will get you a concussion. An average head-to-head hit is 160ps. That is way too dangerous, not just for high school players, but for everyone. Not only is the brain damage to high but football causes

¨95% of second-impact syndrome deaths are in athletes under the age of 18¨, a scientist said(Marusic). For high school players, it is way more likely to suffer catastrophic injuries like broken necks, permanent disability, brain damage or death, than college players are(Marusic). A blow to the chest can cause as much force to the brain as a head-to-head hit(Reed). In the movie “Concussion”, legends like Mike Webster, died from an head injury because of playing football. Also in 2015, a high school player collided with another and the boy broke his neck on the field. High school players should not have to suffer injuries like this. High school football needs to be changed significantly or just banned in general. Although football causes life threatening injuries, the brain damage you get carries on through your whole
According to a study from Dr. Robert Stern of Boston University's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center kids who play Football under the age of 12 have a risk of developing behavioral and emotional troubles as adults. He has also found much higher rates of depression, apathy and other neurological problems among those who started playing the game young. This is yet another reason that proves my point that Football is a dangerous sport because it shows that higher rates of depression, apathy and other neurological problems come from playing Football. Lastly, repeated hits to the head from playing Football can cause CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). Which is degenerative disease found in the brain.
I think that kids shouldn't play football because it is too dangerous. People get concussions every day when they play football. After repeatedly bashing their skulls football players get concussions, caused by the spongy tissue in the brain hitting the hard skull. It is very painful to get a concussion, and leaves permanent damage to the brain. As well as being excruciatingly painful, and possibly never being the same, with many issues. "In milder cases, athletes can be left with lifelong pain, memory lapses, aggression, depression, personality changes, and many other issues."(Shotz[11]). This sport just keeps getting more and more dangerous, manifesting on itself, becoming more and more brutal as players become more competitive. There are
Football is a game that can cause serious injuries, which can also affect you in the future. According to the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance Study, “More than 500,000 high school football injuries occurred between the 2014 and 2015 school year,” (Pros and Cons of Playing Football). One of the most dangerous injuries players get is a concussion, a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body. These concussions are often mistaken for minor injuries, but can sometimes be more
First of all, football causes many concussions and trauma to the head. Having so many hits to the head causes all sorts of problems to the brain. According to the 2010 TED Talk, “High schoolers playing contact sports are 3xs more likely to have a serious concussion, life threatening injury compared to college students and adults” (Gorgens, TED Talk). This explains how younger kids and teenagers are more vulnerable than grown men. The brain of younger youth are still in
What is Football? Football is a brutal sport that can have lifelong consequences. It’s dangerous and overrated. It has become a business that is only concerned about winning at the cost of maiming players, but people love it. Football players suffer more concussions than athletes in any other high school sport. Is this beloved game worth the risks, or should schools do away with it? We shouldn’t let teens ruin their lungs with cigarettes, so why would we allow them to damage their brains in the name of football? I have never played the sport, but I have friends that play and they’re always injured in some way. It’s just pointless. High school football players can undergo significant brain changes after just one season, even if they don’t get
First of all, my first reason is kids won't have fun. Kids these days always talk about sports what sports they are doing outside of school and what sport they are going to do in school. Kids probably can't wait to join football,
Blankets are put down at 4 p.m. to reserve a seat. Streets become deserted and restaurants empty just before 7:30 p.m. kickoffs” (B. 12). While football is one of the most loved sports; it is also one of the more dangerous. Many football players will endure bone fractures, ankle sprains, and knee injuries, which are very common; but the injury high school football seems to attract the most is head injuries.Head injuries can have a lasting effect on high school players and tend to be very common. Some people consider the players at fault, while others will blame the helmet manufacturing, coaches, or even the parents. High school players are almost always overlooked and many problems can arise. Therefore coaches, players and parents need to take more responsibility and see that there are solutions to prevent concussions and eliminate such a common problem among high school players.
Thesis: Youth and High School football teams are not adequately protected from the danger of concussions and head trauma.
A concussion is, “a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth” (“What is a Concussion?”). Concussions can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and sleepiness. Although these symptoms seem terrible, these are only short term symptoms of a mild concussion. More severe concussions can cause life-long problems with memory, learning, coordination, emotion, and even sight (“What is a Concussion?”). One poor play can cause a severe concussion and, furthermore, a permanent end to the life the player knew before the incident. While not all concussions are that critical, every concussion has consequences. Unfortunately, thousands of high school players face these consequences annually. Studies show that, “Some 67,000 high school football players suffer concussions every year, according to official tallies, and many more concussions go unreported” (“Farewell to Football”). Even if an exceptional football player beats those odds, one in every twenty NFL players suffers from at least one concussion in his career (“Farewell to Football”). Players under the age of eighteen are even more likely to experience severe brain damage from the game. According to ESPN, getting hit hard on the field can be the equivalent to being hit over the head
Banning football is like the Prohibition. Just like with the Prohibition, there is much danger and controversy surrounding football. People that think football should be banned make a good case for the ban because of long-term illnesses such as CTE or ALS which could physically disable a person for life. On the other hand, football teaches life skills such as teamwork or trust. 0
The topic of most concern for both parents and school board members is the risk of injuries. Tackle football may be fun for children, but the hits can be hard, resulting in excruciating injuries that can have long lasting effects that aren’t fully understood, such as reason as to why some kids don’t recover from a single injury or why some children have more catastrophic
Concussions can occur virtually anywhere, and everyone is at risk of getting a concussion, whether they participate in sports or not. Athletes, who take part in any kind of contact sports, no matter the age level, are all susceptible to suffering from a concussion. Football is one of the sports that expose young athletes to higher risk in getting a concussion. According to Headcase, football is said to have one of the highest concussions rates (64-76.8) when being compared to other sports. According to a study done by Frontline, high school football players are twice as likely of getting concussions compared to college players. In the study conducted, there was a rate of
Some people think that high school football should be banned however, this should not happen for many reasons. Doctors and school boards are debating on if high school football should be banned due to the heath risk. If football is the most popular sport in the U.S. why would we take it away from so many high school students who enjoy playing the game. There is the same risk playing other sports. Even though there is a chance for concussion in football; high school football should not be banned because technology is make the game safer, and it is just as safe as any other
Would you be willing to play a sport that could potentially end your life at any moment? In any sport, it is noted that you are more prone to injury versus the average person since you are putting your body at risk. It is known that football is one of the most dangerous sports because it has a high-risk for concussions. On an average, about 47 percent of athletes who play high school football receive sports-related concussions. SInce 1997, 50 high school level and younger football players were pronounced dead after complications due to their concussions. Because of these intriguing statistics, the sport of football should be banned. Football should be banned as a whole because of health concerns regarding concussions, long-term effects from concussions, and mental disorders.
High school sports such as football, should be banned because it causes continuous concussions that result in brain damage. A concussion is a brain injury caused by a hit to the head or a rough shaking of the head and body. Concussions in high school sports especially football are very common and the impact injures the brain. The article, High school Concussions, conducted a
