Sara Shepard wrote in her book Flawless “The sweetest smiles hold the darkest secrets…” This quote relates to the main character Abigail in a play called The Crucible. This play was written about the Salem Witch Trials and inspired by the McCarthy Hearings in which Arthur Miller—the author—was living through. In The Crucible, Miller portrays Abigail Williams as a troubled orphan who is manipulative, cunning, and has a propensity to victimize herself in every situation that does not fall her way.

Many people blame Abigail for what she has done, I have found that she was not the only one to blame for the causes of those people whom have lost their lives due to people believing in other peoples false accusations, Abigail is simply one of those people that accuse for their own benefits.

Starting out, Abigail Williams was a 17 year old teenager who lived with her uncle Rev. Parris. She was an orphan and had no power, no money, nothing of her own. This gave her all the more reason to try to gain power over people. Abigail was clearly the leader of the girls of Salem. Having been in high school, one would know this gives her a great feeling of power. It all starts to spill out when Abigail’s cousin falls sick and Parris is trying to find the cause. Witchcraft

Abigail doesn't want to believe that the affair with John is over so she tries to kill Elizabeth so she can be with John, by pretending to do witchcraft with other girls form the village. As we continue to read throughout the book, we notice the true colors of certain characters such as Abigail Williams. Abigail is a very intelligent, persuasive, malicious young woman. She is one of the main characters in the novel and is the main reason witch craft started in Salem. At first Abigail portrayed a young, innocent girl, but once you found out what she was doing with John Proctor, you started to think otherwise. She betrayed her own friends just to protect herself. Abigail Williams already needs a way to reinforce her status as not only was she a woman, but she also has an affair with John Proctor. Initially Abigail needs to save herself from accusation; she does this by deflecting the blame on others. She says, “I want to open myself…I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (Miller 45). In this quote Abigail realizes the she must deflect the blame or she may suffer the punishment of witchcraft. This foreshadows the coming of mass hysteria as the other girls realize that they too need to deflect the blame or risk death. Abigail shows that she is even willing to remove anyone out of her way of gaining authority. She blames Marry Warren when she explains, “Oh, Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. No, I cannot, I cannot top my mouth; it’s God’s work I do” (107). Abigail accuses Mary Warren for trying to help Proctor stop them. Abigail begins to use her new found power to maintain her authority. Before these trials, Abigail cannot do anything as she is a woman. However, the Salem witch trials change everything; now the whole town treats Abigail well because she provides them a scapegoat.

Due to her fear of punishment, selfishness, and envy, hundreds of innocent villagers were accused, several were killed, and an entire society was left traumatized and afraid in the late Seventeenth Century New England. Her actions resulted in absolute tumult and chaos. You may be wondering, “Who?”, or, “How could one person possibly have such a huge affect on an entire community?” The infamous Abigail Williams, who lied and took advantage of the fearful, suspicious society in which she lived purely for her own benefit.
