What it means to be a Catholic To be a catholic means to be loving and caring towards all. The literally meaning of catholic means to be baptized by the catholic church but the spiritual meaning goes much deeper. The word catholic was first used by St. Ignatius in one of his 7 letters. The word Catholic originates from Greek word katholikos meaning open to all. Which is a great perk to catholicism. Currently Christianity is the biggest religion in the world with roughly 2.2 billion people practicing the faith.
America got religious freedom with the first amendment. The early christians faced persecutions because their faith was looked down on and misunderstood. Believe it or not the early christians were thought as cannibals and atheists. People thought they were cannibals because they celebrated the body and blood of Jesus Christ. They were thought to be atheists because they wouldn't worship the roman emperor. Because of these claims christianity was illegal and the age of martyrs started. The reason so many people gave up their life for their faith was because they thought the world was ending. These are not requirements to be catholic they are just good guidelines. They are over 4,200 different worldwide religions. No one should be forced to partake in any religion if they don't want to.
