What Does the Second Amendment Mean to Me? The second amendment: A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed, has three parts to it, each involving weaponry. The entire sentence is all about the right to bear arms, or carry a weapon. Having a “well-regulated militia,” meaning all men, from the age of sixteen to sixty, had to be involved in a local militia or military service. In early American history most, if not everyone had a gun, those who did not have a gun were ordered by law to pay a small tax in place of service for the military. I agree with this as I believe if everyone contributed in keeping their country, home, family safe then there would be less distress about violence and crime. …show more content…

The argument stands that those who take away the right to bear arms also take away the right to self-defense. All this part states is that the people have a right to carry a weapon; it does not specify what kind of weapon so it does not necessarily mean guns. I myself like a bow and arrow, so having a right that allows me to have fun shooting a target in my garden makes me happy. On one side, many would say criminals should not have weapons, men or women who kill should not have the right to carry an object that could kill another but if you think about it many of those criminals kill from self-defense. They feel threatened because they live in an area where gang violence and crime is high. I believe that there are only a handful of people who kill others for “fun,” psychopaths who feel a need to kill, it is a mental illness.
