What are the psychological implications of children using technology between the ages of 1-5? Summary of the research question and outcome My research project was inspired by my love of children and the many times I have observed children using technology. From this experience I noticed many young children are extremely familiar with technology and the use of technology can have both positive and negative effects on them. As I have researched into this topic, I have learnt there are many beneficial and harmful implications of technological use for children. A finding I have come across on multiple occasions is children should not be using or be in contact with any technology whilst they are under the age of 2. A positive implication includes using technology for educational reasons as opposed to entertainment purposes. Using technology for entertainment or for long periods of time can negatively affect the child psychologically. Mostly undertaken by parents with children between 1-5 and teachers who work with children between the ages of 1-5. My survey consisted of 24 questions and each question got a wide range of results. My survey results gave me insightful information and opinions on what is believed could be implications of technology and whether people are aware of what technology can do to young children. The results helped me with understanding some on the beneficial and harmful implications and the ways technology is changing the way children think and focus. In today’s society we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought on some concerns and some praises. Children these days have no choice but to some how be influenced by the ever growing technology in our societies. Our common concern has been that although digital technology has boosted children’s talent for multitasking, their ability to process information deeply may be deteriorating (Carpenter, 2010). Many studies and observations have been made on how technology can negatively affect a child’s physical health, mental health, emotional well-being, values, educational development and relationships. The results of these studies found technology exposure can be linked to childhood obesity, behavioral problems, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, coordination disorder, unintelligible speech, developmental delays, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, poor physical activity and poor school performance.
Technology has brought us nothing more than negativity toward people. The first effect is health. technology affects individuals' exercises; so children become lazier and are most likely not motivated to work out. Along these lines, numerous health issues like obesity are brought about by the effects of technology. The second impact is communication. Ironically children don't have the chance to socialize with each other in person. They’re wasting their time using electronics instead of exploring the world and developing human nature. Technology is becoming more of a dependent in people’s lives. Everywhere someone goes, there will likely be more than fifty percent of people there on a digital device. People are usually always seen with digital devices such as; smart phones, tablets, and laptops. This is slowly making its way to younger generations, including infants and toddlers. Now, with growing times, children are getting into this habit of always using a digital device as well. Digital devices are being used for entertainment, tools, and communication. Children are given a digital device for either entertainment, learning, or just to keep them quiet. It is really up to the parent for what the device is being used for. Children who use digital devices at a young age with parental or teacher supervision may contribute to an increase their own ability to learn.
It is no surprise that today people live in a world where technology is used on a regular basis. Classrooms everywhere with a tech based white boards, touch-screen cellphones that talks back to you, cars that can drive itself. However, technology could be harmful if being used too much that could lead to a serious long-term effect. As you know, daily life today is not complete without technology; whether it be cell phones, laptops, GPS, smart watches… the human race by today’s standards cannot persevere through a day without technology. Yes technology assists in communication, encourages multitasking, and teaches knowledge, but children are glued to screens. When I was a child I spent the majority of my day outdoors with friends, riding my bike and playing games; only coming home when the street lights came on. Today, however, kids are enamoured with technology. The rapid changes in technology have impacted greatly on the families of the 21st century and it is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Entertainment technologies such as games consoles, television and tablets are taking centre stage in our children’s lives with 1 in 3 children using a tablet before they can talk. Due to modern technology, such as computers, game consoles, tablets and smartphones, today's world for children is very different than it was for their parents. Is this a good thing, or is it bad? While there are good and legitimate arguments on each side as to whether the use of technology by children is positive or negative, most should conclude that when used in moderation and with supervision, technology's effect on young children is one we should ultimately be thankful for because it has opened a new, and maybe even untapped, horizen of knowledge. By summarizing a few points of the negative impact versus the the positive impact debate, and an explanation of using technology in moderation with supervision, most should be able to come to agreement that the effect is ultimately good.
A study performed in 2016 by Sharkins & et al., 2016 stated “that 29 % of children under the age of one watched approximately 90 min of TV or videos daily and 23 % of children had a TV in their bedroom.” This same exact study also proclaimed that cellphones, toys, and games that use technology increase learning and understanding of how things work. When young children saw their parents or older siblings using technology it peaked their interest in educational areas like reading. Technology can enhance a child’s understanding of what different symbols, pictures mean and give them the chance to be apart social community that can be extended outside of the home (Sharkins & et al., 2016). Smartphones, tablets, computers and televisions alike have all become a major part of modern culture. They inform, entertain, amuses and assist us every day with news articles, videos and funny blurbs. But technology’s potentially harmful effect on young children has been a concern of adults for years. Whether brainwashing children, ruining their eyes or making them violent, the list of the damaging results of tech use grows longer by the minute. Parents feel the need to limit their child’s exposure to the provocative screens before the damage is irreversible. The concern is completely valid; technology has the ability to entirely capture a child’s attention in almost an unlimited fashion, there is endless amounts of information for a young mind to absorb. Access to this sea of knowledge could keep a child from experiencing more physical and interactive activities that build up other important skills and developments in children. But this sea of knowledge does in fact hold many benefits for kids. Much of the teachings that daycares and schools provide are on these devices and early access could help put a kid ahead of the pack. Technology builds, transforms, and inspires. Every aspect of one’s creative, personal, and professional life can be stored and backed up on technology. Because of its innumerable capabilities and relevance, one could infer that there is an oddly intimate relationship between humans and technology, simply by stating one would feel uncomfortable and naked without it. Mobile communication, more specifically social media, leads to a further understanding of how technology plays an influential role in the lives of youth. Many preadolescents acquire mobile devices and rely on them for the majority of their play; therefore at such a young age, the device and the child become inseparable which hinders the child from participating in other activities. In sum, parents or guardians should not let their children acquire a mobile device before the age of 10 to prevent advanced digital technology from invading and occupying their lives.

Throughout history, intellectual thinkers have guided the development of society through innovative inventions that changed the world drastically. One such invention that changed the way others communicated was the first telephone, created and revolutionized by Alexander Graham Bell. This invention harbored in a new period of time with increased numbers of technology. Since then, technology has expanded into television, computers, and other electronics that many rely on in order to function on a daily basis. People of all ages and backgrounds use technology consistently, including children and those from Generation Y of the 80’s and 90’s when electronic use became more frequent (Zhitomirsky-Geffett & Blau, 2016). Many have debated the effects of allowing children to use technology, but it is believed that there are both positive and negative effects. Childhood development is influenced by technology because it affects health, learning, social relationships, and sleep patterns.
