As stated by the World Health Organization (WHO), ‘health’ is defined as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1948). The health and wellbeing of individuals is generally determined by their circumstances and environment, a phenomenon referred to as the social determinants of health. WHO describes the social determinants of health as:
The Better Health Association is a nonprofit company whose objective is simply to increase the health of people through health education, guidance, and diagnosis screening programs. They make an attempt to assist audiences of any age and socioeconomic ranges to gain knowledge of living an even healthy life-style and creating the know-how required to develop healthy and balanced choices. "My role within the company is to secure agreements from at least three major area advertising and marketing agencies to underwrite the creation and production of all Better Health special event programs for the next three to four years. I also, create an active and positive presence for the agency in state-of-the-art social media venues that results in recruitment and assistance to new clients. Monitor and track results quarterly. In addition to, developing systematic marketing plans that address every operational area of Better Health including client services, all fund raising events and general association promotion in all media venues" (https://bluequill.franklin.edu, n.d.).
The NHS provide all different kinds of health care programs to promote health and wellbeing, an example of this could be physiotherapy – this is a program that involves the individual having either one on one sessions or group sessions to work on their health problems, the physiotherapist will also set tasks out to continue at home, so that the person can help themselves without relying on the professional being there with them. These tasks will help to improve the health problems, and when someone is able and knows that they can complete the tasks and help themselves alone it could make them feel better about themselves, improving their
Naidoo and Wills(2001, p.47) “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ - WHO (1946).” This definition falls into a holistic way of defining health, which believes that there are more areas to look at when thinking of health than just simply the absence of a disease. It considers the cause of why someone is ill and not just simply about ’fixing it’.
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (World Health Organisation, 2011)
Firstly, looking at the positive definition of health, it is a positive concept, highlighting social and personal resources together with physical capacities. According to the World
In modern society there is a general consensus that ‘good health’ is something that everyone wants to experience and that each individual knows what this involves. Because there are so many different definitions of health and ill health it can become a very complicated concept. Walsh (2011) states that “In sociological terms ‘health’ and ‘illness’ are contested concepts. This means that the general meaning of these words should not be taken for granted.
‘Health’ is a very broad notion, affected by a wide range of individual characteristics, behaviours and contextual factors.
But over the past few decades, the definititon and concept of health has evolved to encompass more elements than just the physical well-being of a person. This is partly attributed to various researches and studies that have taken place around the world in the last 60 years. Already in 1948, the World Health Organization declared that health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not
The World Health Organisation defined health: “State of complete physical and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity” (WHO, 1946 p.100). Many factors influence health such as family traits, behaviours, access to quality healthcare and environment (quality of air, bad/good water and housing conditions) (WHO, 1946). The holistic view of health combines the mind (mental), body (physical), emotional and spiritual elements to a person (Ewes & Simnett, 2003).
The United States and its people are governed by the central force of the government. However, even though the government has been around for centuries, there are those that are still arguing about the purpose of the government. These people include presidents, senators, newscasters, and even the regular people of the United States. The Great man and second president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson once states, “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.” Through the quote, it can be found that Thomas Jefferson believed the purpose of the government is to protect the lives of the people and ensure their happiness. Thomas Jefferson was right when saying that one of the purposes of government is to protect the people, however, protecting the people isn’t all the government does. The purpose of government is to ensure the protection of the people, their rights, and to establish justice for those who need it.
Improving health is in the best interest of everyone, including non health professionals. Health mangers need to be constantly looking for ways to improve access to health, the quality of the care, and cost containment.
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1948.)
“Don’t treat the disease, treat the patient” [9]. The concept of health has seemed to become complex in definition over the centuries as science improves. “Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.”-World Health Definition of Health (1948) [9]
Health is not limited to a physical illness that can be cured or alleviated but must encompass the entire individual. It includes spiritual, emotional, social, mental and physical aspects of the individual. All of these areas must be assessed and evaluated when caring or a patient and their families (Chitty, 2007, p. 303).
