The course of Ethics 3341-01 was a real eye opener for me this year. Initially going into the course I expected to gain a general over view of what Ethics is, and the relationship it has to the world. However, we were able to analyze the relationship of ethics and how it applies to the different sectors of public life. Not only did we look at a police officers perspective of living by a moral code, we also focused on other individuals within society, such as judges, citizens, and attorneys. This course showed the different sides of morality and how easy it is for individuals to loose their way. Within our society today there are numerous problems being faced and police and other members of the law enforcement are trying to help combat these
One fall morning, when the sun has not come and there is still darkness, I arose from my slumber awaiting the big day I would have ahead. While I am getting ready for the game, by putting on my pads, I get ready to step out my house and get ready for an intense three hours. As I walk to the car, I can already sense the coaches hollering, and the parents just hoping that nothing would go wrong. Each road that we pass and the closer and closer that I get to the field the hollering and the screaming become louder, louder, louder, and louder. Until they stop, as I step on the field, I no longer hear the hollering and screaming. All I can hear are the coaches getting us ready for the game that would happen in fifteen

Chapter seven introduces us to the escalation of commitment and the associated consequences. As human beings we have tendencies to adhere to certain behaviors. Our investments in the decisions we have made, both personally and in-group settings heavily influences how we proceed. In many instances these actions are irrational and lead to crisis. Understanding when to call it quits, or when to say “no” is the key in making the right choices and not falling victim to escalating our commitments for the worse.
The benefit of having an ethics compliance manager is that this individual can promote and enforce ethical decision making behavior that is in line with Acme Toy Company core ethical values. He/she would have the ability to investigate when there has been a breach in the code of ethics (such as stealing company equipment) and make recommendations for change and improvement in current business practices or recommend disciplinary actions if necessary.
I agree with the author’s argument that unethical behavior can arise unintentionally because we tend to don’t think about the side effects that may arise when we make our every decision—and that happens too often. In the article, author provides us an excellent illustration of two modes of decision making. Like author states in the article, our minds have two distinct modes of decision making, which we use each of these modes in separate occasion of decision making. When our minds are overloaded or we are in any kind of emergency, we tend to make ethically compromised decisions. This happens because of the two modes of decision making—System 1 and System 2 thinking—according to the author. If our brains need to make decision quick or experience fear or emergency, in these types of scenarios, we tend to use our System 1 thinking mode because this mode is our intuitive system of processing information because it is fast, automatic, effortless, implicit and emotional so we use System 1 thinking mode majority of the time. However, System 2 thinking is slower, conscious, effortful, explicit, more logical and we weigh the pro and con or aftermath of our decision. One recent incident that involved System 1 thinking method is I believe is Harambe, the Gorilla that was shot at the Cincinnati Zoo to save a baby. They had to make a decision in the matter of
Many face ethical dilemmas daily through their different professions and usually this is when issues arise, some dilemmas are simple tasks others may be very complex and some have grey areas. Organizational culture, codes of conduct, rules and regulations and equal opportunity for example, play a role in a profession’s ethical standards. When looking at society today with regard to crime. Ethical standards in our justice system are extremely useful because our beliefs and values regarding right and wrong, are structured by reasonable ethical standards and have helped establish our criminal justice system. According to (Pollock, 2010), “ as Law becomes society value so does ethical standard because every person is a value to society, and society has a right to protect this value, and even against his or her will”
Many perspectives can be taken when considering what fair is. As with most things, this too applies with the pay as you earn(PAYE) plan. The multiple angles and directions to view this plan lead to much conflict and controversy that keep this a trending topic, but even so, many people disagree on the degree of forgiveness this plan should permit.
The first step to make prudent decision-making is anticipating possible dilemmas, alternatives and answers; then reflects objectively and analytically about them. For these alternatives be considered reasonable, it is essential that these are aligned with the standards, laws, and institutional policies that shelter us. Supported decision-making methods will conduct professionals to strong sound objective ethical decisions. Moreover, these allow professionals to meet the challenges whether legal or personal with integrity and a clear understanding of the proper way to behave. The ethical decision-making should be a continuous educational, maturation, and personal process. Additionally, decision-making involves the responsibility of operating
The course helped me to analyze different perspectives of a variety of situations. Situations all have pros and cons that everyone must consider prior to making an ethical decision. It also helped me to identify the theories effecting my life.
In today's business and personal world, ethical decisions are made on a daily basis. Most of these decisions are based on company ground rules. The others are based on personal ground rules. All decisions can have a number of ground rules that help us determine whether our decision is ethical or unethical. Each decision whether it is based on company or personal ground rules will have its own set of implications. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the impacts of ethics on decision-making, discuss the elements of an ethically defensible decision, define what the ground rules are; what they could be and what they should be, discuss
One of the key teachings from the Catholic Church is that all human life is sacred. We know this because we are all created in the image and likeness of God. In Genesis 1:26-27 it reveals, "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness' ... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them”. This means that we are what we are because of God, we are spiritual because God is spirit: "The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (Genesis 1:2)This is one of the many examples of how we are all created in the image of God. We are all created to have the potential to express these godlike capacities distinctively because God has made us all unique. As we are created in the image and likeness of God we reflect God’s sacredness.
