ITECH 2201 Cloud Computing
School of Science, Information Technology & Engineering
Workbook for Week 8
Part A (3 Marks) Exercise 1: Green Computing(0.5 Marks) The questions in this exercise can be answered by doing internet search and/orfrom the YouTube videos. Answer to each question should be one paragraph in your own words. What is Greenhouse effect? Greenhouse is a process where some trace gases like main carbondioxide, warm the earth surface. This characteristic effect is called greenhouse effect. In this process when energy form sun comes to earth some are absorbed rest are reflect back. The energy which is absorbed warm the earth surface as well as atmosphere and its lead to various environmental problem like climate

First of all IT companies and institution, IT Students should aware about the Green IT their dangerous effect and Advantages. Secondly there are many techniques to make greener our environment by IT sides.
The energy is more consumed by datacentre, information system and all computers so we should reduce the use or use it as per need.
The computers and all of other electronic equipment should be recycle as the emits carbon dioxide and old PCs should be used instead of new one.
The company should design the equipments like computers, cooling system, servers, datacentre in such a manner that they serve environmental friendly and use less amount of energy,
The manufacturing of this electronic component should be done in a manner that it sounds environmental friendly and has minimum impact on our atmosphere.
The assessment tool like electronic product environment assessment tools should be compulsory used by every buyers and company to find green IT

List and briefly describe (2 lines) the APIs provided by the above major vendors.
Amazon: RESTful Amazon cloud drive is the APIs used by amazon. And it provide access to images, videos and filed document which users have saved in the cloud drive and also gives access to you to interact with million of other customer who are using amazon cloud drive.
GoGrid : REST like Query interface is API for gogrid. And its technique is made over entire internet through sending hypertext transfer protocol and GET. Or Place requestto the REST host of GOGrid API, mainly any PCs speech can be used to easily interact with others over HTTPS with their REST serve.
Google: google uses google cloud storage JSON API. This API is deliberated mostly for software developer. If anyone want to use it than,One should know web programming and able to create application on web that gain web service by requesting HTTP.
Microsoft: the Feedly cloud API is the API for micresoft. The data are sent as well as received through JSON as in google and all of them (API) is enter over HTTP and HTTPS.
A RESTful API defines a set of functions that developers can use to perform requests and receive responses via HTTP protocol, such as GET and POST. Because RESTful APIs use HTTP as a transport, they can be used by practically any programming language and are easy to test. It’s a requirement of a RESTful API that the client and server are loosely coupled and independent of each other, allowing
3) When you hear the term “making IT eco-friendly”, explain how this is related to Information Technology and the environment.
As used electronics is becoming a waster hazard worldwide local governments such as where I live include programs at local waste stations purely for electronics. This encourages local residents to freely drop off their electronic waste, like TV’s and computers and mobile phones to these locations where the waste is sorted and than shipped to facilities that can process this waste appropriately which also includes recycling as much material as possible. This has a
Marketing Analyst One: We should position ourselves as an environmentally-friendly company by emphasizing our electronic products.
Computer science educators are uniquely positioned to promote greater awareness of Green Computing, using the academic setting to encourage environmentally conscious use of technology. This paper reports on practical techniques that can engage faculty and students, enabling Green Computing to be integrated into the classroom and research laboratory. Analysis and empirical evaluation of each reported technique is given, comparing the efficacy of each in terms of energy, environmental and financial cost savings. These results are provided as technological and economic evidence for the benefits of “Going Green,” and to promote
As an aftermath of the advancement in technology, the useful life of electrical and electronic equipment has been shortened due to environmental pollution and global legislations. The handling of e-waste including combustion in incinerators, emplace in landfill is no longer permitted. In Australia, the recycling of e-waste, such
Every year people in the U.S create about 660 million pounds of tech trash. Tech trash can pollute the environment because electronics can have dangerous chemicals like lead and the chemicals could leak into a river and pollute the water. How do we stop this? One way is to use electronics as long as you can. Also you can donate electronics to a charity or a neighbor. Another way is to look for a certified e-waste to recycle your electronics.
Environment conservation and protection is an issue, which has gained prominence because of deteriorating environmental balance which is threatening the sustainability of life and nature. Nowadays, environment problems have become the big matters. Every tech companies have to take the key roles to solve them including Intel. The company has proclaimed the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. The Initiative’s goal is to reduce global computer CO2 emissions by 54 million tons per year, equivalent to the annual output of 11 million cars or 10-20 coal-fired power plants. This clearly shows that Intel is trying its best to reduce the pollution of the environment.
The environmental friendly measures adopted by the company needs to be maintained and adopted across the other business processes and operations (Loock et al, 2013). The company can use “Green IS” which can improve the environmental-efficiency of the business processes through automation. Moreover, the implementation of decision support system can help in the implementation of the relevant sustainable strategies and also help integrate the flow of environmental information in the organization (Thambusamy and Salam, 2010).
What is cloud computing? Cloud Computing is storing and accessing applications and data over the Internet and not locally of your computer’s hard drive. The concept has been around and in use for years. To put it more simply, cloud computing means providing processing power to electronic devices (PCs, tablets, smartphones) via a remote infrastructure. There are some advantages and disadvantages of using cloud computing in a business environment. I will be describing three advantages and three disadvantages of using cloud computing in everyday business.
In modern society, computer becomes popular, and people work and study based on computers. However, when these computer gets old and unusable, the electronic wastes would damage our environment hardly. Electronic waste contains a lot of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium which are highly toxic. These metals cause acid leaching which contaminates ecosystems nearby. For example, a CRT( Cathode Ray Tube) monitor can have up to 2.2kg of lead that is poisonous, which can lead to fumes, food contamination, and skin absorption. Also, these heavy metals such as beryllium, cadmium, and lead release chemicals which help to contribute to global warming and create a poor air quality with too much pollution.
(3) Web Services in the Cloud - instead of delivering full applications, this service allows users to access APIs for added functionality.
Wide range of network access capacities-different devices such as desktop computers, mobile phones and tablet devices can be used to access the network. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google, IBM and Salesforce.com use Cloud service. Whiles, New York Times and NASDAQ use AWS (NIST).
To decrease energy consumption and environmental effects of a product through the entire life cycle,
Green computing plays an important role in green environment. It is because almost all of the businesses and organizations depend totally on IT to perform every tasks and operations and production and disposal of computer wastes directly affects the green environment (Chow and Chen, 2009). Thus, Green Computing helps to utilize computing resources more efficiently and effectively in order to decrease power consumption and environmental impacts.
