Trust vs. Mistrust Erikson's first psychosocial crisis occurs during the first year or so of life (like Freud's oral stage of psychosexual development). The crisis is one of trust vs. mistrust. During this stage the infant is unclear about the world in which they live. To resolve these feelings of doubt the infant looks towards their primary caregiver for firmness and consistency of care. If the care the infant receives is stable, predictable and reliable they will develop a sense of trust which will carry with them to other relationships, and they will be able to feel secure even when endangered. While on the other hand if we fail to experience trust and are frequently frustrated because our needs are not met, we may end up with a deep-seated feeling of worthlessness and a mistrust of the world in general. As a result of failure in this stage many studies of suicides and suicide attempts point to the importance of the early years in developing the basic belief that the world is trustworthy and that every individual has a right to be here. Adolescence is a stage at which we also think about we are neither a child nor an adult, life is definitely getting more complex as we attempt to find our own identity, struggle with social interactions, and grapple with moral issues. This is also the stage wherein teens need to develop a sense of self and personal identity and a success to this stage leads to an ability to stay true to yourself and find your true identity.
