Social Inequalities In the novel to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shows a theme of social inequalities throughout the book. Social Inequalities is one of many things that is still present till this day in age. Proves to you that your inequality and relevance can be determined by anything from the people around you daily. To Kill a Mockingbird, the town of Maycomb is an excellent example of the discriminatory practices in place during the 1930s. Harper Lee in this particular theme wanted you to learn that in this particular time era, you were placed in a “group” or “community” based off of everything you did, right or wrong. Social Inequalities is revealed throughout the book by the color of your skin. Also by the way you dress or your …show more content…
Throughout the whole book all of the characters revealed this theme because no matter how high and mighty they were, even by the “people beneath them” they got discriminated and judged by appearance. “ It’s just as much Maycomb County as Missionary Teas.” ( Lee, Pg.215) Quote in the previous sentence proves that the appearance and way you dress can and will cause the majority of Social Inequalities. Also that it can soon just deplete and destroy the unity needed for a community. In the beginning of the book; Boo Radley seemed to reveal this by being a victim of it. Also more broad and present as the book goes on. “ He dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch.. There was a big jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped and he drooled most of the time.” (Lee, Pg.16) This quote is a very good example because it explains that the features is what everybody bases his personality and character off of. Everyone would soon to learn not to judge a book by its cover. Whether you know it or not. Many people are more than what they seem on their outer layer. Dig deep to the core and you're bound to find something amazing and …show more content…
In the beginning of the book Miss Dubose showed that what you have as an individual and your decisions, makes you apart of a group or community based off of it. “ You never really understand until you consider things from his point of view--...until you climb inside of his skin and walk around it it.” (Lee, Pg.34) This quote proves that you can’t put someone down: judge them or think you're better than them until you experience what they have been through and what it feels like. beginning of the book, Miss Dubose and Atticus, and real all of the main characters revealed this theme. “ What i meant was, if Atticus Finch drank until he was drunk he wouldn't be as hard as some men at their best. There are just some kind of men who-who’re so busy worrying about the next world. They’re never learning to live in this one and you can look down the street and see the results” (Lee, Pg.52) quote made by Miss Dubose proves that the decisions made can give you a label you don’t fit nor want; just based off of what you did. This causes Social Inequalities because the decisions aren’t always controllable. Many simple life people like Atticus and Miss Dubose have shown that what you have good or bad, and the decisions you make can’t really determine you as a person inside or how people see
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a prominent character throughout the book. He will always do what he believes is the right thing to do, no matter what the consequence. Despite the long held feelings of his community, Atticus stands as a sterling example of a man of principle who is willing to practice his moral values. I will address my thesis in multiple parts.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows the readers some important themes. Lee shows the readers how Scout has grown and matured throughout the novel. With this in mind Harper Lee makes sure that she changes how social inequality is viewed by Scout as she matures and can understand it better. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book all about innocence and social inequality, due to Scout getting older, the innocence goes away and the social inequalities grow. A great deal of characters play a massive role in the social inequality part of the book.
Do unto others as you would have them do to you. This proverb means to treat others the way one wants to be treated. For example, I treat my close friends with loyalty, respect and kindness because this is how I want them to treat me. As a case in point, when my friends need help with biology homework on cell division, I help them when they need it because I know more about cell division and when I need help on history homework on the Revolutionary War because I am not so good at history, I would expect them to help me. In fact, I would be there by their side when they need help. Truly, I expect them to have my back the same way. This maxim connects to social justice because the concept of the maxim
For many years, America has struggled with equality. Through all the assumptions and stereotypes, America has been beaten. The amount of inequality in America has dramatically decreased throughout the years. Social equality is something that everyone has always wanted. One of the biggest inequalities is African American rights. Constantly there is always a change being made that has made African American rights much better. Within Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the audience is introduced to social equality by Scout Finch in Maycomb, Alabama. Consequently, since she is so young, she struggles to understand why there is inequality in the 1930s. Through all the harsh comments and assumptions of character interaction in the novel and
Prejudice within the white community is another theme that is explored in the novel. In the novel the member of the white community being singled out is Boo Radley. Boo Radley is singled out by almost everyone in the white community including Scout. Scout singling out Boo is important because it is part of the novels narrative which is that the events are seen from the innocent, non biased point of view (Scout). The innocence of scout is made apparent when she says “I think there’s just one kind of folks” which is her unknowingly occurring the values that Atticus has installed in her. This links to the characterisation of racial divide which is an important feature of the novel. Also as aforementioned this is an example of Scout subconsciously portraying her innocent personality. The quote “when they finally saw him, why he hadn’t done any of those things...” , “Atticus he was real nice” Is again an example of Scouts innocence.
ocial inequality is a major issue in today’s world. It is the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society (Mahault et al. 6). Racism is not the only form of social inequality, it can also be because of an individual’s background and or wealth. These three forms of social inequality appear numerous times in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In this novel, the argument made by Harper Lee is that social inequality is a ladder that is complex and affects everyone.
It is not right to judge someone before you know them, this is one of most popular “golden rules”, and it is the theme of To Kill a Mockingbird. Mrs. Dubose seemed to be a mean on lady but as the reader gets to know her they would realize that she acted that way because she was going through withdrawal. Dolphus Raymond always seems to be drunk, as the characters Scout and Dill both find out that he simply asks different than others and he want to give people a “reason” for why he acts like that. Boo Radley seems to be very menacing and deadly, but he is simply very shy. The main theme of To Kill a Mockingbird, is that it is not right to judge someone before you know them, which is proven to be true in the lives of the characters, Mrs. Dubose,
What is social inequality? What I do know is that it is not acceptable and shouldn’t be tolerated. For example, the Robinsons and the Radley’s, are both treated extremely poorly, because of the time period and the racist town of Maycomb. Throughout the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee develops the motif of social inequality through the families of the Robinsons, the Ewells, and the Radleys as they are all treated with social inequality.
“I mean in Maycomb County. The thing about it is, our kind of folks don’t like the Cunninghams, the Cunninghams don’t like the Ewells, and the Ewells hate and despise the colored folks” (303). In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Maycomb County prejudices people based on their background and social class. In Maycomb County you must act as your social class to be appropriate and fit to your “kind” of people. The hate for lower classes get worse the lower it gets. Harper Lee divulges on how social class effects the way people are treated. She shows how higher classes think they are superior to the lower classes, they think the lower classes are “trashy” and “uncivilized”. Harper Lee reveals socioeconomic prejudice in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by using characters in fictional Maycomb’s upper, middle, and lower classes.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is about two children, Jem and Scout, and their relationships with their father, Atticus. The children raise themselves growing up, many people would say they were irresponsible, but they are both appear to be intelligent individuals. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird the novel demonstrates a rigid class structure and social stratification in the County of Maycomb. People should not be judged by their social class, they should be judged on their personality.
Atticus exclaims in his speech that “all men are not created equal” in order to draw attention to the treatment blacks receive on a daily basis. Atticus argues that people claim that everyone is equal when they actually are not. He emphasizes that blacks are treated harshly because they look different compared to others. He shows that people are discriminated against merely because of their skin color. Atticus reveals that Robinson is only portrayed as guilty because the human race is too selfish to let others share the same rights due to their skin color. Atticus beats down the white’s perspective on African-Americans in order to make them feel remorseful about the way they treat others. He appeals to the jury’s morals to show that they must do the right thing and give everyone a chance to do good rather than imprisoning a man because they want to. Finch tries to convey to the audience that people are selfish beings who only attack others because they can. But Atticus also expresses that nobody is the same and that “some people have more [opportunities]… some men make more money… some ladies make better cakes… [and that] some people are born gifted” (Lee, 233). Atticus indicates that nobody has the same characteristics, genes, or personalities. He implies that by discriminating against people only because they are different, they are also discriminating against themselves. People do not have the right to shame others because they are different whenever everyone else is as well. Atticus shames individuals because they treat blacks poorly for the same concepts that white people have. Atticus tries to open the audience’s eyes about the crazy, psychotic world in order to allow them to realize that people
Some of the diversity and human inequality are base in the book by their social class, the color of the skin, and whether you are a woman or a male. Social class plays an important role in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. The division of a society based on social and economic status tells whether your an upper class were you have money, or lower class where you don't have that much money. Atticus Finch is a lawyer and he is defending Tom Robinson in court. Many people in Maycomb didn’t like the fact that Atticus was defending Tom because Atticus is an upper class level than Tom.
In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” society shapes and influences Scout and makes her see the reality of social hierarchy and discrimination in society. For instance, in the text it states, “If there’s just one kind of folks, why can’t they get along with each other? If they’re all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other? (Lee 304). Literally speaking, this quote tells us that despite everyone being the same, there is still hate towards others, and discrimination is still present in their society. This quote may suggest and show how Scout is influenced by society and changed into someone more mature, and can now see the disparities and understand the discriminations shown in her society. Another example states, “There’s four kinds of folks in the world, there’s
Throughout the story, we see Harper Lee critique our society and the things that prevent it from moving forward and one of those examples is race inequality. The book took place in between 1933-1935 in a town called Maycomb, Alabama where in a time racism was heavy. People were discriminated and even killed just based on the color of their skin. Knowing this, Harper Lee grew up experiencing these events. In the story Lee states, “…the evil assumption—that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber, and “That institution, gentlemen, is a court. It can be the Supreme Court of the United States or the humblest J.P. court in the land, or this honorable court which you serve. Our courts have their faults, as does any human
In the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, racism and social inequality are two central themes. Many different forms of social inequality coexist in the society depicted in the book, as the people of Maycomb are very rigid in their ways. This is because the book takes place in a time at which there was much racism and social inequality. In Maycomb, firstly there is discrimination between rich and poor white people, who do not often interact with each other. There is also racism against blacks by all white people in society, both rich and poor. Black people are denied basic rights and discriminated against in this town. Lastly, there is racism between the lowest classes of the community: poor white people and
