If you have sacrificed, you have suffered. The fundamental parts of the human condition is that everyone has an equal capacity to suffer. Whether It’d be sacrificing yourself for perceived security, sacrificing your happiness in order to keep someone safe, or suffer with someone and make the ultimate sacrifice. In Age of Innocence, Archer sacrifices potentially starting a new life with Ellen in order to protect his wife. Archer, when “he thought of Ellen, [she’d] become the complete vision of all that he had missed. [He realized, He was] dead.”Archer sacrificed himself and his potential future with Ellen in order to stay with his newly formed family. In Ethan Frome readers watch a man struggle with his conscience. It seems as if throughout the short book he has a little devil on his left shoulder and an angel on his right, whispering to him. He deals with everyday things, one of the most prevent being regret. Ethan's biggest regret thus far comes from his left shoulder devil. The voice tells him to make his move on Mattie and tells Ethan he is wrong for not kissing her when walking her home or showing affection to her at their dinner while Zeena was away.
People in this world face temptation everyday. Some temptations might be not wanting to get out of the bed in the morning when the alarm clock goes off to resisting to eat that last piece of cake but it looks so yummy and delicious so they just decide to deal with the consequence of maybe getting some extra fat. Other temptations may be bigger and maybe even life changing like wanting to take that new job or be with that new person, but whatever a person does, most of the time there are consequences to those temptations. Some might not have bad consequences, a person just has to choose wisely in the decision making. In Ethan Frome and The Scarlet Letter, the characters both face temptations that result in a bad outcome for both of them. Edith Wharton and Nathaniel Hawthorne create temptations that the characters have to face and chose decisions wisely so they do not get scorned by their society. In both of these novels, the characters commit sins that their society deems inappropriate. Mattie goes against what society thinks is right and tries to be with her sisters husband. Hester, like Mattie, commits adulterer and has a child as the outcome.
The character Ethan Frome in the novella, Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton can be classified as an archetypal tragic hero. Ethan is archetypal, as the issues which confront him are universal. He draws on thoughts, feelings and concerns that have been part of humanity since the start of mankind. Ethan is a tragic hero as he shares in common, some of the characteristics required to be so. Two of these characteristics include that he has a noble stature and that he succumbs to hamartia. While Ethan Frome may not conform to a strict definition of tragic hero to be found in classical literature, he is an archetypal tragic hero nonetheless. What is particularly tragic about Ethan Frome, however, is that in order to be good, he has to be miserable.
In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, John Proctor is portrayed as a selfless man. Readers are shown this throughout all of his trials. He takes a great deal of time to forgive himself for accidently falling in lust with Abigail Williams, He admits to his wife that he has committed adultery with Miss Williams. Later on, he shows it again when he tears up the confession that would have saved his life, for others. This act is believable and is not selfish, since he is thinking of his friends more so than his own life. The play also ranges in making sacrifices for others. There are a few sacrifices that have been made to protects everyone’s social standing. Although, it is already proven that Goody Proctor made a sacrifice to prevent her husband from getting punished with adultery. She did something that she never does which was lie to protect his social standing. Proctor also made a sacrifice for his wife when he admitted to committing adultery. He did this to free himself from the guilt he had inside himself, gain trust in himself again and to get his wife out of jail. This all resulted in, the courts demanding him to nail a sign to the church door saying that he committed adultery. This made the people of the town judge Proctor for his actions. This also got Abigail in big trouble. This made Abigail escape from Salem and go to Boston to become a prostitute somewhere out there. This shows where her mind was at. She should have been the main out of all of the characters to get hanged because she committed a lot of sins which include lying, witchcraft, and having an affair with a married man. She caused all of the dispute in the whole situation with the witch trails.
