Poetic language is the techniques that the poets use it to convey their message. It makes the text creativity by using the feature of it. There are three approaches that make the texts creativity. (Carter, 1999) identify those three approach; they are cognitive approach, sociocultural approach and inherency approach. The cognitive approach focuses on what is going on the reader's mind, sociocultural approach deeps on the social issues and how the language effects on the social, the inherency approach focuses on the language itself. So, the poetic language linked to the inherency model because it talks about the language, and the poem becomes more literary and creativity. To be the language and the text literary it should breaks the …show more content…
Elliot. In the first line he describes "April month" as the "cruellest" month and this adjective uses for human not for months. He presents "April" in unorthodox manner. He uses "and" at the beginning, it is not correct in English to start with "and". Elliot uses the verb (foresuffer) which is in English wrote "for suffers". The poet creates new words like "Shaggybeared", "Hopkins" has the "Widownmaking", uncliding and unfatehering. Also, there is a mixing of conjunction between "summer" and "rain", "warm" and "snow", feeling with dried and tubers. There is graphological deviation and rhyme pattern in 'wind' and 'kind' and 'z' and 'du'. The poem has a full of allusion. It makes the readers think that the poet has past experience of wholeness. It has lacking the traditional kind of coherent as on observes fragments and allusion. The language of the poem has a lot of images, it is disorganisation and disorderly. So, "The Burial of the Dead" breaks Paul Grice's maxims. There is ambiguity meaning and new words in it, which are not clear. There are many of images and allusions. The poet does not achieve quality maxims. Also, it makes the reader confusion."The Burial of the Dead" has a complex meaning and wrong comparative. All of this deviations and breaking the role of Paul Grice's maxims makes the poem more literary and creativity, "more complex, more
George Szirtes article “Formal Wear: Notes on Rhyme, Meter, Stanza, and Pattern” from the Poetry Foundation opens with opinions which focus on limitations of poetic form. As a counter to these common arguments, Szirtes claims, “Verse is not decoration: it is structural. It is a forming principle and words at depth” ("Formal Wear: Notes” 2). He then develops an argument explaining, “the constraints of form are spurs of the imagination: that they are in fact the chief producers of imagination” ("Formal Wear: Notes” 2). Taking these ideas into consideration Szirtes incorporates the idea of language explaining how language connects to memory and imagination which come together to form poetic images. Additionally, when poets use form it develops
Elliot juxtaposes life and death. Life is absent of itself in the 20th-century. This new inanimate state of the population no longer has a personal interest in productivity, creativity and learning. Winter symbolizes the stagnation of culture, for Elliot feels the people of the new age lack spirituality and emotion. Elliot references the land, roots and tubers as dead, these objects present the human life as scantily alive buried by the frozen immobile snow. The 20th-century human's natural state is the season of winter. April is the cruellest month of the year for the tubers and roots are resuscitated by spring rain and water which symbolize the peoples reunification with culture. The objects of frozen water and rocks in winter represent
Poetry has a role in society, not only to serve as part of the aesthetics or of the arts. It also gives us a view of what the society is in the context of when it was written and what the author is trying to express through words. The words as a tool in poetry may seem ordinary when used in ordinary circumstance. Yet, these words can hold more emotion and thought, however brief it was presented.
How does the poet use language forms, features and structures to convey ideas and feelings?
A well-written poem would help one to engage into the work with their senses. One should be able to ask themselves what the poem caused them to think, hear, see, feel, taste, and to determine what he or she learned from the poet’s words. Many people believe that because poetry is an enigmatic art, and that there is no way for sure to know the
Poetry is a literary piece of work, that has transformed English, each poet having their own unique writing style. All poems and poets are distinct in their own ways, but what is needed to construct a great poem? Not everyone may agree on what makes a poem great, but when I think of it, a great poem paints images to get a point across. Using concrete images allows the author to express ideas and messages that can not typically be made with just regular words, imagery adds a spark and helps the reader understand the message more clearly. The reader should be able to picture vivid scenes in their mind. Another characteristic that all exceptional poems contain is a strong powerful message. Without this factor, the poem will be pointless. However, when a poem conveys a vigorous message it impacts the reader in numerous ways. Aside from imagery and messages, personal connection is extremely important in producing a remarkable poem. If the reader can connect to the poem, then it will influence the reader and make it even more enjoyable to read. These three key factors are crucial in poetry and will determine the overall success of a poem.
In “Preludes” the motif of decay, such as ‘newpaper’, reminds the persona of a changing society, where the rapid changes are having an impact on his ability to adapt. The symbolism and juxtaposition of “withered leaves” and “newspapers from vacant lots” emphasises the decaying nature of tradition, compared to the pervasive modern society, because of this Elliot’s difficulties lie within his inability to understand the changing situational environment. This is supported by Montogoner .M “How can one play any reasoned confidence in that “feeling of pastness” which suggests that there is difficulties between the present moment of awareness and past moment of awareness” Implying that decay is omniscient, and its affect on the past have an impact on the way we feel about history and social change. Elliot repeatedly implies this idea throughout the poem, demonstrating his battle with social change. The allusion in “with other masquerades/ That time resumes,/ One thinks of the hands” draws upon the changing societal expectation and the decay of old expectations. In order for Elliot to see the changing world he needed a window, ultimately it was language. This is emphasised by the shorter strophe length of “That time resumes” In comparison to other strophes in the stanza, indicating that change is already happening.The idea of decay prevailing in social change is reflected through the use of visual imagery and personification in “His soul stretched tight across the skies/ The fade behind a city block/ or trampled by insistent feet”, as the “trampled by insisted feet” being tradition, it is seen as being devalued and forgotten show that social change is happening. Elliot’ s acute senses forces him to accept the social change and this is what torments him. Hence, Elliot concludes to a hight extent that
poem is not merely a static, decorative creation, but that it is an act of communication between the poet and
In part one 'The Burial of the dead', Eliot opens with a scene of isolation and desolation. 'April is the cruellest month…'which is an inversion of what spring represents, this being new life and hope. It is seen here as cruel because, for Marie, it stirs memories, which are no longer there and have led nowhere. He follows this image of isolation with an image of togetherness, 'Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow…' She recalls being free in the mountains, but freedom involves taking risks and she hesitates and goes 'south in the winter'. Marie's memories portray the shallowness of the aristocracy and in many ways we are reminded of the ladies in Prufrock who 'come and go talking of Michael Angelo'. There talking leads nowhere and so by implication their lives are meaningless and dead, as dead as the wasteland.
In general, poetry is metrical composition and it uses audible symbol, which called musical sounds. Furthermore, poetry represents a kind of abstract language, also shows symbolism to the others. In China, all of the children need to learn Chinese poetry when they start from primary school, me is one of them, which can be said like that I grew with poem. I fell in love with poetry gradually, which reached its peak during my undergraduate period. Because of I was learning Guqin at that time, one of most ancient Chinese instruments, which needed I well understood poetry. Guqin refers to Chinese culture, for as well as poetry, so if wants to be skilled in it must learn poetry. And later, after I learnt in American, I met western poetry, which is totally different from Chinese poetry, but still let me intoxicated. So the theme of poetry essentially relates a matter of culture. Hart Crane’s Legend and Li Bai’s Drinking Alone Beneath the Moon both express feature moments of silence, even more contemplation. However, the deeper meaning the speakers’ contemplation is different in both poems.
There are many literary works that have been created by the authors with different types and different genres of literary works. Literary works itself never separated from the elements that contained in it that help to build the story of literary work itself. There are 2 elements in a literary work; intrinsic element and extrinsic element. Intrinsic element itself is elements that make up a work of literature in the form structure are like a literary elements found in the intrinsic elements. Yet, this paper will focus only on intrinsic element especially in a poem.
This epigraph may serve as a way to connect with a certain group of scholars, as not many people speak the language it is written in, however, when it is read in its original context it may mean that Eliot does not foresee a very bright future, which would be in tune with the rest of the poem, furthermore this reference strongly hints at the use of tarot cards and the notion of randomness in the rest of the poem. The fact that this epigraph is in a foreign language greatly contributes to the theme of the poem and is therefore discussed in the next section of this paper. Followed by the epigraph is a quotation from the Anglican burial service, which serves as the subtitle of the first part of the poem: “1. The Burial of the Dead”. This leads us to additional intertextuality,
Without even realizing what occurs when reading poetry, it’s interesting to now understand the methods that poet’s use. Inasmuch as, image are used as a language that addresses the senses. Furthermore, it you ponder that thought for a moment, the poem that captures the readers full attention is the one that the reader can exchange places with. For example, if a poet renders a poem about a girl in Paris, using extremely descriptive words, it’s easy to imagine being there, and experiencing what the poet is seeking to portray. Additionally, a poet’s choice of language in the poem has the ability to appeal to other senses. Notably in the poem written by Li Ho entitled “A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair.” Whereas he managed to appeal to sight, sound, and smell.
The term “Metaphysical Poet” was first used by John Dryden and later coined by Samuel Johnson in the 20th century. The term was used for the poets of the 17th century, it was a period of intense ferment in all areas of life — religion, science, politics, domestic relations, culture. Metaphysical literally means to transcend above or beyond the physical world in order to gain perspective. The term permanently got associated to poets like John Donne, Andrew Marvel, Henry Vaughan, Richard Crashaw, and George Herbert. Their writings were a deliberate reaction against the 16th century verses which were smooth and had a sweet tone. The Metaphysical Poets, therefore, adopted an uneven, rigorous and energetic tone and were concerned with man’s experience;
