Perseverance is something that everyone experiences in their life. The definition of perseverance is “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.”. Perseverance is a big theme in the story “Into the Wild” by John Krakauer. Chris McCandless had to go through a lot of perseverance to get to Alaska. When Chris first started his adventure he needed to break free from the high life style that he was raised in, also the abuse and lies his father has caused on him and his family. In Chris’s view he thought money was evil and that is what destroyed his family, it would make his father crazy and abuse his mother. Which Chris was disgusted by. By thinking the simple life was a better fit for Chris. After college he left his apartment and told his landlord to forward his letters till the end of July when he wanted an early start before his parents discovered his plans. McCandless abandoned his car after the flood it was caught in and the fact that it wouldn’t start up, it was very hard for him to loose his car because that was one of the last things he had from his past life. He also burned his money in October 1990 so he would not be tracked by his parents or the PI the parents had hired. …show more content…
On the Journey, Chris met a lot of interesting people, such as Wayne Westerberg a grain elevator operator in South Dakota, Ronald Franz an old man who wanted to adopt Chris as his own son and Jan Burres who ran a knick-knacks stand at hippy flea markets. After his near death experience in Mexico, he tried to get over the border, but ended up in jail for a night. Soon getting back over the border he got a job at McDonalds, which he struggled with following the rules by not wearing socks, he soon left and continued on to
Overall, Chris McCandless was a smart young boy who was raised into the wrong society and he chose to be the way he was. Going into the wild was what Chris needed in order to get away from everybody and find his reality. By the end of his journey he did just that and was ready to come back and experience life from a different point of view. Unfortunately, Chris was unable to come back and show everyone the person he found himself to
Christopher Johnson McCandless was born on February 7, 1968, and died sometime in August 1992. His surviving family members include his parents, Walt and Billie, his sister, Carine McCandless, and his friend, Westerberg. One of the defining moments in Christopher’s life was when he did a selfless deed by picking up a homeless man and keeping him in his parents’ trailer without them knowing. Christopher was an extremely confident man who always did what he wanted and set high standards for himself. One can say that his extreme confidence and high standards are what enabled him to fall on the path towards death. In April 1992, Christopher embarked on a peregrination in Alaska where he intended to live off of the land for a few months. He was
Chris McCandless had admirable plans. Chris McCandless wanted to prove that he can survive on his own and have his own independence. Chris was a hardworking and was considered one of the best at his job. McCandless was considered an overall great person Westerberg stated, “ He was the hardest worker I’ve ever seen. And totally honest--what you’d call extremely ethical.”(3). Chris McCandless prove to be hardworking in order to get all the way to Alaska, even though he didn't get to accomplish his goal.
It has been very perplexing reading this novel and trying to truly understand the motives one would have to have to make the decisions McCandless made. I am questioning Chris’ motives for cutting ties with his family and travelling all around the country. I think that he truly had a deep love and spiritual connection with nature. It began as a young child when Walt McCandless (Chris’ father) took Chris on many excursions in the outdoors, such as hiking in the mountains. Chris immediately fell in love with nature and all of the pleasures it had to offer. Also, Chris was motivated by his withering relationship with his family. Early in his life his parents worked tirelessly and it was difficult for Chris to spend time and build a solid relationship with them. Throughout his young life he had disagreed with his parents about many aspects of life. It was said that he
McCandless led what many consider a great life for a student. Matthew Power describes Chris as a “...24-year-old honors graduate, star athlete, and beloved brother and son ... cut all ties with his family, gave his trust fund to charity, and embarked on a two-year odyssey that brought him to Alaska... where he could test the limits of his wits and endurance.” Based off of Power’s quote, McCandless seems like he led the best life that he could have led an almost perfect life. He also gives the impression that McCandless did not have an apparent reason to abandon his life and live in the wild. Peter Christian, an Alaska park ranger, brings another idea into view when he says, “The tragedy is that McCandless more than likely was suffering from mental illness and didn't have to end his life the way he did.” He brings another perspective into the mix because he suggests that Chris actually had a mental disease that caused him to feel drawn to the wild rather than his
There had never been and there would never be someone exactly like Chris McCandless. Chris has a middle class background and stands out from his peers because he believes that society restrains his independence. He leaves his past life and wanders America heading toward the lonely Alaskan wilderness to find who he really is. He discovers ways of moving to Alaska despite leaving behind all of his possessions and social status. Chris’s sincerity and integrity earn the respect of the people he meets. He inspires people leave behind their old life and explore the country by documenting his experiences. Chris loves to challenge himself and after succeeding academically he finds purpose through self deprivation. Chris chooses Alaska because its'
There may be as many as 300,000 child soldiers, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s, in more than fifty conflicts around the world. Ishmael Beah used to be one of these child soldiers , Ishmael Beah is a child who lived most of his childhood in the war . He is one of the first to tell his story in his own words according to http://www.alongwaygone.com/index.html and his memoir “A Long Way Gone”. The war had made ishmael have perseverance in the long run , inference that he was brainwashed by the war and that ishmael was a very hopeful child always wishing for better days.
He wanted to live a simple life, not worrying about food, money, sex. In life, the only thing he wanted to carry was himself. For example on pg. 142, Chris states “you come to believe in the reliability of your hands and feet and head. You learn to trust your self- control.” This shows Chris realizing that he needs only himself and by the example of his hands, feet, and head he is showing his future is up to him. The second part of the quote, explains his mentality of how he must rely on his ability. To become completely self-reliant, McCandless took drastic measures such as abandoning his yellow Datsun to make it known he doesn’t want to be found and to also exert more self-reliance by relying only on his ability instead of a vehicle. Another drastic measure he took was giving all his life-savings ($24,000) to OXFAM, and with any remaining money was burned to fully feed his need for
Chris McCandless is a person of great strength of mind that is not well used for he became arrogant in his life and stayed stubbornly away from new knowledge that could have helped him. While chris may have ended his life's story with his odyssey he is still one of the few people to actually follow their dreams all the way to their ends even if it meant
This is one reason why he decided to leave home; he wanted to experience the life of not having anything to his name, this is also shown through out the book during his journeys, however this not the only reason why he left home. The ultimate reason why he left home was because of what his father had done. A cab driver name Stuckey whom helped McCandless reach Alaska elaborated that McCandless said that he found out that his father was living a bigamist life and that it went against Chris’s beliefs (159). This was ultimately one of the reasons why Chris left home and had no feelings towards his parents. This exhibits the hatred and no remorseful attitude McCandless had through out the book towards his parents, especially his father. However, this attitude towards his father and civilization is justified completely when he decided to leave home and take on the wilderness.
The Call of the Wild follows the story of a dog named Buck. When Buck is plucked from his domesticated life and home, and then later forced to become a sled dog, he begins to face the harsh wilderness of Alaska. The Call of the Wild is a story of survival, of doing whatever it takes to make it to tomorrow. Its a story of doing what must be done. The overall theme of The Call of the Wild, is perseverance.
No matter what you’re fighting against, in order to win, you must persevere. In Call of the Wild, Buck must fight against the harsh and snowy climate, and even dogs from his own team. On the other hand, my grandma didn’t let anything get in her way when the doctors discovered she had cancer. Even though my grandma and Buck have lived very different lives, both of them had to persevere through their problems. Everybody will deal with something rough in their life, which is why we must use perseverance to move forward.
Enduring and persevering through the snares of life is not always easy. Perseverance is not giving up despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. In the novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, the characters face troubles and difficult situations. Louie in particular does not give up although all hope seems lost. Louie exemplifies perseverance through his experience in Olympic running, in the army, and in the ocean.
Improving and getting better in life needs a lot of perseverance. In The Call of the Wild Buck was forced to improve on his life skills in the Yukon. He was beaten and was urged to carry a sled. In contrast, my father had to improve his academic skills in order to get accepted to optometry school after he was not accepted the first time. While Buck and my father had differences in the experiences that they had to preserve.
What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also a measure of success, or at least how much sacrifice one is willing to make in the name of success. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed.
