Perseverance is something that everyone experiences in their life. The definition of perseverance is “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.”. Perseverance is a big theme in the story “Into the Wild” by John Krakauer. Chris McCandless had to go through a lot of perseverance to get to Alaska. When Chris first started his adventure he needed to break free from the high life style that he was raised in, also the abuse and lies his father has caused on him and his family. In Chris’s view he thought money was evil and that is what destroyed his family, it would make his father crazy and abuse his mother. Which Chris was disgusted by. By thinking the simple life was a better fit for Chris. After college he left his apartment and told his landlord to forward his letters till the end of July when he wanted an early start before his parents discovered his plans. McCandless abandoned his car after the flood it was caught in and the fact that it wouldn’t start up, it was very hard for him to loose his car because that was one of the last things he had from his past life. On the Journey, Chris met a lot of interesting people, such as Wayne Westerberg a grain elevator operator in South Dakota, Ronald Franz an old man who wanted to adopt Chris as his own son and Jan Burres who ran a knick-knacks stand at hippy flea markets. After his near death experience in Mexico, he tried to get over the border, but ended up in jail for a night.
