"Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it." The necessity of peaceful resistance to a free society is stated perfectly by Howard Zinn. Peaceful resistance is one of the most positive influences on a free society that can be enacted by the society's citizens. Throughout history, peaceful resistance has been used by members of free societies to stand up for their beliefs, and society would not be the same without them. A few of these events include Rosa Parks' demonstration of resistance, the protest of the deforestation of Pureora, and a protest against the discrimination of public breastfeeding at Applebee's Restaurants.

As long as people are fighting for what they believe is right in a peaceful manner, they are performing a duty necessary for the prosperity of free societies. An example of this smaller-scale resistance can be seen through the protests of the deforestation of Pureora. In these protests, conservation activists built tree houses, sat in front of trees, and lay under logs in order to stop the loggers from cutting down trees. As a result, the loggers had no choice but to halt their operations to refrain from injuring any of the peaceful protesters. Not only did the conservationists receive this immediate victory, but the Government created a park out of the forest that could no longer be logged in. This truly demonstrates the influence peaceful protests can have on free societies. Had the conversationalists not stood up for their beliefs, New Zealand would have a barren landscape in place of a beautiful park.
