After reading and viewing the mob mentality pieces, I conclude that mobs were gruesome groups that were hard to stop when in the action. For Instance, in the NPR Radio Diaries, it talks about how a mob a lynched two of three boys and broke into a place station to get the last boy ( “ Strange Fruit: Anniversary of a Lynching” ). This shows that mobs were virtually unstoppable. They were not satisfied until everyone they wanted dead were dead. They were willing break into the holding cells and get in trouble or hurt just to have one more person dead. Another idea that supports this conclusion is from S.E. Smith’s article “ What is Mob Mentality? “, the article talks about about if some people get trampled when there is a lot of urgency or
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee does a good job addressing and showing us how a mob mentality can affect others. One way that mob mentalities affect characters such as Mr. Cunningham was, they get into a state of mind where everything else blurs and the only thing they see is what they want. “”You know what we want,” another man said. “Get out of the door
One reason as to why mob hysteria could create a form of power to the wrong person is that this creates a form of fear in the rest of the people. As a result, those people look to someone to lead them out of the bad situation, and that person is not always the best one for the job. Humans have not
“As rumors flew through West Duluth, tension mounted throughout the day until a mob--estimated at 5,000 to 10,000-- marched down Superior Street to the police station” (Duluth’s shameful past, Pg. 1). Mobs are not small amounts of people. Many people join just to fit in. Not all of the thousands of people could possibly think that what they are doing is right. There had to have been a few that disagreed, yet still went along with the rest of the mob.
The American Mobsters How did the Mob change today's society? The mafia is still active and can change the way of society, however they tend to keep their work under the radar. The mob is how it originally started. Keeping everything low-key and making sure nothing got out of hand. The mafia is still active and making tons of money but the world just doesn't seem to notice them anymore due to their lack of publicity. Stories about the mob are dark, gritty and unimaginable and people truly don’t know what occurs1. Although the mob has been unheard of for a while, they still roam the streets and the underground. The mafia started shortly after the prohibition in the 1920s. Italian-American and Jewish-American men took the prohibition as an opportunity
Mob mentality is one of humanity's greatest threats and will always be and will always be mysteriously carried through every future generation. As shown in the Salem witch trials and the McCarthy trials, everything starts with something and that something has a reason for doing something. If these trials would have never happened then we would still have a lesson to learn. If we do not study history and historical mishaps like this, then we are doomed to repeat it. Aside from the bloodshed, chaos, and mislead lives, there will always be a something to hold onto and that is the hope we should always have to fight
Mob Hysteria can be a possible cause from losing your moral rights; however, there are positive sides to this phenomenon. According to the Collins Dictionary, “mob hysteria is the heightened and extreme emotions that can be experienced by people in a large crowd”
After reading and viewing the mob mentality pieces, I conclude that people in a mob mentality situation do not think rationally and conform under peer pressure. I was able to come to this conclusion because of the articles explaining human behaviors. Many behavioral studies have been conducted on animals and humans. One reason many people conform to others around them is because of wanting to be accepted or have a sense of belonging (Smith). In the photograph by Lawrence Beitler at the lynching many people came from all over the area to see the lynching take place. People in the mob beat the boys up before they were lynched (“Strange Fruit: Anniversary of a Lynching”) The men who did this obviously were not thinking very rationally
Often the people of the mob don’t act in a reasonable way, because they are acting on their uncertainties. After being confronted by his friend Walter who wanted to lynch the prisoner Atticus defended, Atticus said, “‘Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man, […] he just has his blind spots along with the rest of us’” (210). Another example of people acting cohesively in an uneducated manor would be the results of Tom Robinson’s case, where he was wrongfully convicted of raping Mayella Ewell, by a jury who, (bar one) without considering the defense’s evidence, convicted him because of his race, a gross oversight of justice and logic. In general humans tend to
Mob mentality is when a group of people usually mad form together and make a very dangerous situation. The group usually ends up being violent and can get easily out of control. Some people join the mob mentality from peer pressure or the need to fit in (Smith 1). The article points out that being in a mob can make people feel like they are invisible or that their actions will not have consequences (Edmonds 1). When reading To Kill a Mockingbird people experience mob mentality first hand.
Mob mentality can occur in any society. It can take place at any time, any day or any night. Mob mentality does not have a direct target. It will take over anyone, leaving them with no control over themselves. Mob mentality proves that under critical situations people will be selfish and follow others’ leads; however, the leads people usually follow are not the ones best for them. Due to large amounts of stress everyone carries, people do not think as clearly as they normally would. Those horrible leads that people choose to follow will eventually cause groups to become out of control. Violence usually ensues when within
Breaking mob mentality is hard and it takes street smart training to do it. That is not thought in law schools and it is hard to learn. Breaking fear in front of a crowd is one of the hardest mentally things people can learn to do.
Primarily, the literature focuses on violence that can easily occur when people gather in large numbers and the deindividualization that can occur as shown in the novel. The research yields material outlining the horrors that can occur when mob mentality takes over: “The mob spirit, therefore, which necessarily involves disregarding or defying institutions and laws, is the negation of civilization itself” (Pearce 206). Though the statement may seem strong, it well describes what occurs within a mob. The experience wherein people feel free from their prior inhibitions and can reduce themselves to nothing more than savages. Without limits, people would continuously commit moral and social crimes leaving civilization in shambles. The research also mentions the deterioration of one’s humaneness within a large excited
Organized groups such as NAACP, MADD..ect. Are set to inform and give information to others who see the way they do. These groups are helpful with showcasing information within the organization. A group such as mothers against drunk driving are helpful informing drivers that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous. Drunk driving is life threatening. Mothers are especially cautious to drunk drivers due to the life of a young child or children in the vehicle. Drunk driving with a child in a car or drunk driving period is the worst thing you can do to harm yourself and others around you. Alcohol impairs your mind capability, your process of thinking what's right and what's wrong is all off. Now within all these groups there are positive and
The idea of mob mentality is complex. Mob mentality is difficult to define. There are many different types of behavior characteristics depending on the type of mob (Smith). Most mobs are negative and full of negative people (Smith). When most people think of a “mob” they think of aggression or chaos (Smith). There are many reasons why people act the way they do in mobs. People’s emotions run wild while they are in a mob (Edmonds). Most people are either sad or angry when in a mob. Mobs at sporting events usually get riled up quite easily because of group solidarity (Edmonds). People join mobs for the excitement, or so they can feel more powerful than everybody else (Edmonds). There are many different types of behaviors in a mob. When angry
There are multiple dangers in a mob mentality. You’ll come across lots of invalid assumptions and the wrong people can get hurt. On top of that, the people who should be getting caught will try to get away with more and spread lies to cover up for their actions. Lastly, this usually ends in more bad than it does good.
