Someone with no control over his or her mind will unknowingly yearn for independence; some may come to realize this, but others will refuse to do so in fear of the outcome. The mom character from “The story for Children” and Truman from The Truman Show, both suffer a lack of control over their minds, which have continuously been suppressed and governed by society and man. The thoughts they have are not their own, neither are the decisions they make. The characters differ in their initial reactions towards the chains binding them to what society thinks is okay, while Truman chose to grasp control over his mind and break out of the chains Christof had tightly wrapped around him, the mother remained a prisoner to society’s thoughts and beliefs. It is believed that the people someone surrounds him/herself influence and shape them to become who they are and considering everyone around Truman is an actor, then even the person Truman became is controlled throughout the reality show. The director, Christof, chose to kill Truman’s ‘father’ while sailing to create a fear of the sea in him—despite Truman’s love for the sea and desire to be an explorer—so that he can never leave Seahaven, which is supposedly an island. His decisions and actions are guided by his fear, rather than his mind and heart. His life is dictated from the beginning, to how the actors as his parents had to raise him, the school and friends he had, to the woman who played his love interest and the desk-job he was assigned to. Truman’s unconsciousness to the real world and people around him took away whatever control he could’ve
