First, he saved Ponyboy from drowning in the fountain. Also, he saved some kids from the church that was on fire. The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, is a novel which tells the story of two rival gangs from Oklahoma in 1965. The rivalry is between Greasers who are much poorer than their counterparts from the west-side, the Socials. Ponyboy Curtis is the narrator of this story, and it is through his eyes that the events unfold. In this classic, there three characters who stood out from the rest: Darry Curtis, Dally Whinston and of course, Johnny Cade. But, are they heroes? To answer this question, one must first know what a hero is. In my opinion, a hero is a person who, in the face of danger, adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and self-sacrifice for the greater good.

It looks homogeneous to they have it great, but in authenticity their lives aren’t that facile. The “Socs” and “greasers” are adversary gangs with consummately divergent lives, but the same issues. Johnny, Dally, and Randy are heroes in The Outsiders.

As they eat Dally explains to them what had happened over the past couple of days. Dally talks about how the cops are looking for them in Texas, and how Pony’s brothers Darry and Sodapop miss him a whole lot. At this moment Johnny decides that they are going to turn themselves in. This shows that Johnny is courageous and caring, he is going to turn himself in no matter the consequence so that Pony can be with his family. This also shows that Johnny is facing his fears, whereas in the beginning he didn’t talk much. As they are driving they see a large amount of people surrounding the church. Pony and Johnny rush into the scene to see what was going on. A fire had broke out in the church, and some kids were trapped inside. Ponyboy and Johnny run into the burning church in order to save the kids. S.E Hinton states “I blinked myself- Johnny wasn’t behaving at all like his old self.
