The Debate Is Over Inequality Is Cruel I am sure more than one of us have heard of the saying “Life isn’t fair”. The saying has
been in our vocabulary since the stone age and it causes us to think; What does it really mean?
In our lifetime we may achieve with triumphs, however our lives will never be the same
unless we are all equal. In the Declaration of Independence it states one of our rights is the
unalienable rights it states that “All Men Were Created Equal.” The unalienable rights are the
one thing that can not be taken away or denied. In our history John Locke once stated that we all
have 3 basic natural rights. These rights include the freedom of life, liberty, and Property. Society

Our community has also spoken, folks like Ariel Smilowitz, Dale O .
Cloninger have both broken their silence by writing their stories. Although it's deep in the past,
it is obvious that inequality back in the 1930s was purely cruel due to racism, gender, and the
wealthy.
As proof, in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird it showcases Scout Finch, the narrator
in the book growing up with her brother Jem Finch. Throughout the book social inequality is a
huge factor. The first reason is that Maycomb is racist. Seeing that the town is biased, the white
people will only support themselves while being prejudiced towards Negroes. The novel mainly
talks about the neighborhood of the children and how people back in the day treated colored
people. Deeper into the book,a vital character to the moral of the story is featured, Tom
Robinson. Tom Robinson is a black man that is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He later gets
sentenced to prison although it is clear he did not commit the crime. Not only that, but Tom later
dies in the book and it showcases the true definition of the book To Kill A Mockingbird.

social inequality in Maycomb is the Tom Robinson case. In the Tom vs Ewell case the towns
displays classic prejudice. On Chapter 21 page 282 as stated by Scout “I shut my eyes Judge

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel by Harper Lee. In the story, the kids have two main focuses in the town, but as they focus on one person another problem arises. As the story continues, the children learn valuable life lessons that help change their mindset towards people. One of those characters is Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Although the jury says he is guilty, he is completely innocent.
That quote is Jem describing why the town doesn’t want anything to do with Dolphus Raymond or his family.
Social injustice has flooded the world and will continue to flood the world until someone stops all this evil. In Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression, there is poverty and racism ruling over the South. Scout Finch has yet to realize all the evil surrounding her and her family. The evil that takes over Maycomb is the racism that lives in the hearts of its citizens. In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, readers see a view of social injustices caused by racism through the Maycomb citizens who see the world through a veil of hypocrisy, which is shown by their actions in the way they talk down to Tom, and the truths of Maycomb’s society.
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about a young black man, Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping a young woman in the South during the 1930s. He is falsely convicted and sent to jail. In the final chapters of the novel, the reader learns that Tom is shot 17 times by the guards while trying to escape. In the novel, a mockingbird is a symbol for everything that is good, pure, and innocent.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, and in the world today there is racial and social inequality going on all around us. I am sure that there will never be true racial and social equality, but I think that it will get dramatically better. Just like it has gotten better since the 1930’s, which is the time that To Kill a Mockingbird is set in.
Citizens in this small southern town believe there is one proper way of living life. Those who choose not to conform to society become victims of racial and social bias. Prejudice is prevalent in the community and is shown in how the citizens of Maycomb respond and react to Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Dolphus Raymond. The prejudice toward these three characters is rooted by ear and misunderstanding.
But he is convicted as guilty due to the racist white men that make up the jury (212). Jem was at first blind to the racist beliefs in his town but his exposure to the trial has opened his eyes. Jem is left unsettled because he learns to empathize with Tom Robinson and see how bad it is from his perspective. How he was sent
Kyleigh Turks Mrs. Tate English III 14 May, 2024 Equality In America Back in the eighteenth century, The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, promised numerous benefits to “all men'' that didn’t materialize until hundreds of years later. The book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, tells a story, set specifically in the fictional Maycomb, Alabama, about the racial injustices that are experienced in America. Adults subconsciously encourage their children to be racist. For example, Francis states, “Just what I said”. Grandma says it’s bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out to be a ni***r-lover.
Equality Equality in Maycomb County is not as equally distributed as it is promised. Black people are looked down upon by the white, because they hold a higher social status. When it comes to equality, there's race that is put ahead of anything. Years after the North had won the Civil War, there’s still a discrimination against the black community. Any white person, no matter what social class they're in, holds a higher status than any black person is allowed.
“You never really know a person until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” Atticus Finch; To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee, Coretta Scott King, and Gwendolyn Brooks show how important the topic of inequality is as the main characters and people of focus are dehumanized and rejected from society due to their differences. First, in the 50s, whites were held about people of colour, seen as superior, and blacks being seen as less than human. An example of literature that inequality can be examined in is the bestselling novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
To Kill a Mockingbird What is social inequality? Social inequality is the existence of unequal opportunities and reward for different social positions. For example in To Kill a Mockingbird some social positions are gender, race, and religion. This is shown in Tom Robinson’s court case.
The novel's theme focuses mainly on the issues of racism and the moral nature of human beings. Tom Robinson's trial embodies the main problem people are facing during the time set for the novel. He is considered a mockingbird which is referred to as the person who is innocent that has been injured or destroyed through contact with evil. He is a person of good nature and is known to have lived his life in modesty. However, through the extent of racist attitudes he was convicted from a crime he did not actually do.
Gender Inequality Gender roles throughout society have greatly changed since the 1930s. Lee´s deft use of stereotypes throughout the book help set up quotes such as this one ¨ I was Mrs. Radley all I had to do was come out and sweep the porch( Lee 43).¨ Women were often viewed as house workers or maids back then and sometimes still are. Women are much more than that and have evolved since.
In the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, racism and social inequality are two central themes. Many different forms of social inequality coexist in the society depicted in the book, as the people of Maycomb are very rigid in their ways. This is because the book takes place in a time at which there was much racism and social inequality. In Maycomb, firstly there is discrimination between rich and poor white people, who do not often interact with each other. There is also racism against blacks by all white people in society, both rich and poor. Black people are denied basic rights and discriminated against in this town. Lastly, there is racism between the lowest classes of the community: poor white people and
Gender inequality and race inequality are similar and different in that they are both unjust, however race inequality plays a more prominent unjust theme in the time and setting of To Kill a Mockingbird. Both black people and women dealt with stereotypes, like being a woman associated with being useless, a gossip, and delusional and being a black person meant you are uneducated. These stereotypes led to the word “female” or “n*gger” or black an offensive term. These connotations made being a woman or a black person less worthy. These connotations and stereotypes invalidated a woman’s or black person's word, these stereotypes and connotations led to their word being less true or important than a white mans, even in court. Gender inequality
