The first African Americans that were put to work in Jamestown were not treated in the way that people traditionally think of early slavery. In fact they were treated just as the indentured servants that had come from England were treated. This does not mean that they were treated with any sympathy or given easy work, but that they just were not discriminated by the color of their skin. The first slaves that arrived were by a seized ship in 1619. These Africans did come as slaves, but were treated more like indentured servants. They could work off their debt and become free people of color. Unfortunately, some would never work off their debt and would be tricked into working longer, especially African women. One case in particular was of a woman who was raped by her master.
Indentured servants were very important to the development of the colonies. In the early years, there were labor shortages and indentured servants provided cheap labor. By bringing in people with specialized skills and providing immigration for other who could not afford, indentured servitude helped the colonies expand.
