Empathy is something that everyone feels or is in the need to say and show feelings towards someone, in homers odyssey some characters show empathy and sympathy in book 9.
I believe Odysseus shows less empathy when he refuses his men’s request, and when he goes to the Cyclopes and decides not to kill him right now because as shown in lines 207-210 it says “ if I killed him we perished there as well, for we could never move so ponderous . So were left to groan and. Wait for morning . Also in lines 185-190 he lies to the Cyclopes when they ask about his ship and he responds by saying “my ship Poseidon lord who sets the earth a tremble broke it up on rocks at your lands end, we are survivors these good men and I” Odysseus is unable to understand
In the epic the odyssey written by homer the theme of reciprocity clearly affects the characters of the odyssey.reciprocity clearly affect the characters odysseus, his men and antinous
Empathy is feeling for others and is often described as stepping into someone else's shoes. Showing empathy is very important and can be very beneficial in certain situations. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Polyphemus shows much less empathy towards others than Odysseus does.
In the book, Odysseus does nothing out of the goodness of his heart. He is self-centered and ignorant to other people’s values and needs. An example of this is when he didn’t listen to Eurylochus when he told him not to send men to Circe’s island. When Odysseus did send men, they were turned into pigs. Another time when men ended up dying was when he waited at the Cyclops’ home for “gifts.” Lastly, 3 more men died when he tried to fight Scylla after being told not too. In these actions Odysseus acts carelessly and doesn’t account for the lives of his crew members.
Although at first glance, Odysseus doesn’t seem to care about his crew, he in fact truly does, as seen through his experiences with Circe, this is because he really cares about his men a great deal. Based on Odyseusses’ actions towards his men during his interactions with Circe, he seems to not truly
Almost anyone can be a hero, but in many different ways. In the book "The Odyssey. " The main character, Odysseus, is known for his heroic actions, such as his strength and selflessness. The song "Holding Out for a Hero" also mentions the strength a hero should have. While some may argue that Odysseus does not show strength and selflessness.
Odysseus angirly exclaims at the cyclops,” Zeus will avenge the unoffending guest”( The Cyclops 260-261). Odysseus gets full of courage and pride when calling out that he could have Zeus come after him not even thinking of the destruction that could come from saying that to the wrong person. Odysseus second detriment from anger is shown when he attacks the Cyclops when he did not have to stop and get stuck in the Cyclops cave. In the story leading up to The Cyclops episode people know that Odysseus and Poseidon do not get along so his anger was taken out on the Cyclops. Odysseus tells the Cyclops,” Poseidon Lord, who sets the earth atremble, broke it up on the rocks at your land’s end.”(273-274). If Poseidon did in fact crash his ship then there has to be a dislike between the to leading the readers to believe he is going to harm the Cyclops out of anger. Odysseus third and final detriment through evil thoughts in the episode “The Cyclops” is shown through his boastful attitude when he puts his crew at risk. Odysseus tries to exclaim again across the ocean,“Now when i cupped my hands I heard the crew in low voices protesting.”(492-493). Odysseus is being very boastful wanting the Cyclops to know who he was and how he was better not even considering the fact that he could get his whole crew
Gasping for breath, the boy runs down the battered sidewalk with blood stains on his pants. Guilty, so incredibly guilty; but the court did not know that yet. Sirens and red flashing lights surround him, his head pounding with a headache. From there, everything went so rapidly; jail, trail after trail, arguing voices of his guilt or not. Voices that decide his fate, people who are his lifeline. He can tell that the Supreme Court sways on his side of innocence. So close becoming released, and yet pride and anger overwhelm him. Taunting the court, he reveals his guilty crimes. Just like that, before another breath leaves him, his escapades over; jail, death row, death. In the Odyssey by Homer, Telemachus and Odysseus let
Can you know true happiness without knowing sorrow? Happiness is a subjective emotion. Some people say they cannot be happy without first experiencing bad things. I do not think this is entirely true. Babies know happiness when they get to play with their favorite toy or when they see something new that excites them. Now some might argue that babies have experienced sorrow or unhappiness when they are crying however, I think their short attention span makes them forget sorrow much easier than happiness.
Having empathy means that you do not judge one’s appearances just like how Telemachus, give up his seat to Odyssey, dressed up as a beggar, without making a fuss about the smell and without any benefit (16,318). Telemachus teaches us to be respectable for person and his action is something students should learn which is to respect human simply because they are human being like each and every one of us. The second instance is that Eumaeus welcome Odyssey, dress as beggar, to his place even though he is a stranger (14, 305-308). This shows the kindness of Eumaeus that he is willing to put himself in danger by welcoming someone who could pose a threat to him into his house and he even treat him like a friend with his hospitality. This is seldom seen in today’s society where everyone just turn a blind eye to others’ need. Through the Odyssey, we also understand the true meaning of friendship and how to make quality friends just like how Odyssey know that Eumaeus and Telemachus are someone he can trust and be friends with for his journey as they possess the quality of being a
Empathy also means that we care about each other. Having someone show you empathy feels better and tells you that someone seen you and admired how you felt. When someone creates you feel that you are valued and want for, you prone feel better about yourself and then you are more prone to displays that you care in return. This creates connections among people.
Sympathy is pity or compassion felt for another sufferings. Empathy is the projection of one’s own personality into the personality of another in order to understand better. Compassion is sorrow for the sufferings or trouble of another.
Albeit both men were extremely solid and evident pioneers, Odysseus demonstrated more empathy via looking after his men. Having qualities, for example, persistence and cunning, demonstrates that Odysseus is all the more "balanced" and best fit for a legend. He made a special effort to administer to his men, despite the fact that he knew they weren't the brightest cluster, regardless he did all that he could to spare however many men as could be expected under the circumstances. A case of this would be the point at which they experienced the cyclops. He rushed to think about an answer for get himself out of there, as well as his men also.
In our bible passage today Paul is urging his readers to respond to the good news of Jesus Christ by living a life shaped by love. And one of the hallmarks of love is how we show empathy. Empathy is the ability to actually feel the emotions of someone else. When another person hurts, we hurt also. When another person is joyful, we feel their joy. Having empathy helps us to understand each other, and respond authentically in any given moment. When we act with empathy, we see the humanity in others and are better able to make real connections.
It has been said that "empathy is about finding echoes of another person in yourself" (Mohsin Hamid). It has also been suggested that "evil is the absence of empathy" (John Connolly). According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, empathy is defined as “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively.” The ability to empathize is an important part of social and emotional development, affecting an individual’s behavior toward others and the quality of social relationships, creating a leeway for building a trust bond. In Shakespeares’Othello, there are a number of apparent cases where the characters, one in specific, portrays the lack of empathy and remorse, manipulation, pathological lying and impassivity. With the evidence gathered, I am urged to believe that the lack of empathy not only affects the individual, but it also extends and directly affects others in a society.
One of the arguments in personal relationships and having empathy for others is that empathy is feeling that you understand and share another person's experience and emotions: the ability to share someone else's feelings, for example Nafisi says “I believe in the kind of empathy that is created through imagination and through intimate, personal relationships” (44).
