To whom it may concern: Looking for Alaska’s characterization is varied. The personality is indirect through thoughts, actions, and dialogue, the physical appearance is direct characterization. In my book, Miles fell in love with Alaska almost instantly, but she had a boyfriend. Alaska was a depressed girl, who hates her life. She desperately wants to escape the school and starts a new life. Soon after Alaska died in a fatal car accident, Miles became sad, moody, and lazy. He was extremely heartbroken that he was in denial that she died. At the end of the book, Miles then came to term with reality. For instance, “My parents think I’m an Fu---up, I don’t want them to know that I’m more of a F---up if I get caught smoking”, this shows that Miles is insecure and has low self-esteem because he believe that (in more school appropriate words) he is a messed up person. This quote reveals that Miles is a rebellious person, because if he gets caught, his parents will be more disappointed than before. Miles personality is showed through dialogue, his true nature is, insecure, low self-esteem, and rebellious. In addition to, the physical appearance is direct characterization, “My thin arms… my chest lacked of any hint of fat or muscle” another direct characterization of appearance is, “Short, muscular guy with a shock of brown hair.” …show more content…
One thing I dislike of books are short sentences, I like long, and descriptive ones because they give me the most information to let me understand the book. I read faster if I enjoy the book, and read slow if I dread reading it. The books I like to read is full of drama, and suspense, such as the book Looking for Alaska. I prefer reading in a quiet environment, and when I have food. You may ask why do you eat while you are reading. Well to answer that, is when the book gets intense, I like to chomp on snacks to let me release my
Throughout the book, Miles Halter shows his different sides. Miles is loyal, loving, and a deep thinker. His different traits surface throughout the book, and I chose a few that seemed the best about him.
Many people in this world will believe in the first impression they get. The appearance people see will usually satisfy them without further investigating into the reality of a situation. The difference between appearance and reality can be quite different. This also applies to literature. There are many instances where an author will describes a character as kind, but is actually deceptive and mean. In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there are characters and situations that show how appearances can differ from reality. The three main instances are the Grangerford and Shepherdson feud, through the Duke and the Dauphin, and Miss Watson.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, the author uses characterization to bring her characters to life. Harper Lee introduces the characters of Scout, Jem, and Atticus Finch, the protagonists. Direct and indirect characterization allows the reader to further learn about and relate to the fascinating characters. She uses them to further connect the reader to this iconic story. By conveying the story through these characters, the reader is immersed into the novel.
When i read i like to able to relate to the author. I can easily relate when the author uses humor to break down difficult or
An example of characterization is, “Walter looked as if he had been raised on fish food: his eyes, as blue as Dill Harris’s, were red-rimmed and watery. There was no color in his face except at the tip of his nose, which was moistly pink.” (30). This quotation reminds Scout that Walter is a very deprived child, who is basically given just enough to survive. Even though Scout was just trying to help Miss Caroline understand what the Cunningham family’s situation was, she did not really realize how hard life must be for the young boy. In this moment, the narrator begins to realize that maybe she does not have it so hard and should appreciate the little things she is given in life. This characterization of the young Cunningham boy is just another moment that Scout is learning a life lesson and can understand things she had not been able to before. An example of indirect characterization is, “She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnia’s grammar became erratic. When in tranquility, her grammar was as good as anybody’s in Maycomb.” (32). This helps explain that Calpurnia was extremely angry when she heard Scout asking why Walter was acting so strange. She was trying to teach the young child that you cannot judge someone just because they act differently than you. Everyone is raised differently and they cannot help if they tend to have strange habits. Calpurnia might have taken more
Each character’s personality in the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is intricately described, therefore giving the reader an image or idea of the kind of person he or she is. A picture of the character is formed in the mind with maybe rough edges but a soft heart on the inside. A character’s personality may be oversimplified by drawing shapes in symbolism, but the shapes may be helpful in perceiving the general extent of the characteristics. With a little help from Lee’s descriptions, I have been able to form images in my mind (and draw them on paper) of the personalities of Scout, Jem, Atticus, Dil, Calpurnia, Boo Radley, and Bob Ewell.
I have never enjoyed reading or writing, I mean, unless it’s for pizza or a prize. Which is usually the only time I would read a book. Writing on the other hand, I enjoy a little bit more than reading. I usually do pretty good with essays. I wish I could find a way to like reading. I see some people read all the time and I automatically assume they’re smart so it would be cool to like reading and people assuming I am smart too. I also get told that reading makes you smarter and I definitely need that.
Everyone wants to read a book that they find interesting. This is prevalent throughout any grade; Elementary through college and further on. In order to peak interests, you find a novel that you believe would catch your attention the whole time. A book that makes you lose interest within the first two pages is one that you would stay away from. Humans have all kinds of different interests, some that may be fascination and that you agree with, and some you might despise.
Rita and her family live together in the city. Where she and her family are involved in activities out of their home. Rita and her father share a common trait of fear, but her father’s fear appears to go to a greater extent, as he tends to burp when he is startled or nervous. Her family, especially her aunt Darlene, have a lot of faith and support her and the activities she participates in.
Miles Halter’s character excels in terms of personality and emotional traits as opposed to physical ones. It is remains clear throughout the novel that Miles was created with the intention of being a character with a strong personality. Miles is a kind, relaxed, intelligent and easily relatable
Growing up I was never a big fan of reading, but as I got older I noticed books are very essential. They are filled with adventures and lessons that only exist in wildest imagination. Without books many of us wouldn't know half the things we know today. Books teaches us math , science, history ,and even how to use a computer or how to play a sport. With so many different genres to choose from and millions of books to read , the task of reading can never get boring, especially when you're actively reading
The character of Alaska seems to insinuate that the mixture of being physically attractive yet mentally unstable is exactly what
My reading experiences have always been enjoyable. I love to read when I find an interesting book. It’s easy for me to be sucked into a book if the story catches my eye. I mostly like to read teen romance novels. They appeal to me simply because of my interest in a love story. My parents hate buying me books because they know I’ll be finished reading within a week or so. Reading has always been really easy to me. It seems almost natural to be sucked into other worlds. The words start to flow over the pages and suddenly it feels like I’m not even reading anymore. Unless I have to read a book for school or it doesn’t catch my attention, I might have a hard time bringing myself to read it.
Last but not least, characterization emphasizes the theme of people are usually not the way we first make them out to be, demonstrating the
I agree with Victor Nell a psychologist of the pleasure of reading, he says “ when readers are enjoying a the experience the most, the pace of their reading actually slows.” I have noticed this from personal experience when I am reading a book and I am enjoying it then I slow down while I read I take my time to really try to imagine and feel what the characters are going thru or try to picture their situation as if I was them. When I have a good book I picture the settings, the charter, their homes their lives. I usually read books that are about teens going through difficult situations my favorite author is Ellen Hopkins. Her novels are very different she talks about things other authors might not feel comfortable writing about her writing can make a person feel that they are right there with
