The American Romantic Era begins in 1830 and ends in 1865 (Scheidenhelm 1).”Romantic literature places an emphasis on the individual and on the expression of personal emotions”(1). Dark Romanticism revolves around the struggles of sin and elements of the supernatural. Famous authors of this era include: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, and Edgar Allan Poe. Short stories from each of these are exemplary examples of Dark Romanticism.
“The Minister’s Black Veil”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a prime example of Dark Romanticism. Mr. Hooper gives his sermon about the reprehensible world. “The subject and reference to secret sin, and those sad mysteries which we hide from our nearest and dearest, and would fain conceal from our own consciousness” (Hawthorne 265). To enhance the homily, Mr. Hooper uses the black veil to show that people mask their wrongdoing and pretend to be honorable. These three stories all include dark themes, strong emotion, and hints of insanity along with other important components. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses his story to convey the wickedness of sin. Washington Irving's main focus is on the eerie setting and harsh life lessons. Meanwhile, when one looks at what Edgar Allen Poe writes it is evident that the attention is on the madness and delirium that the charter goes through. These stories are meant to enlighten one on the harsh truths of reality. Tribulations and the use of strong emotions are often used and provide insight to the reader. Many of these stories involve psychological torment and the use of a gloomy ambience to set the mood and tone of the story. In the height of Romanticism, a painting called Ruined Tower was created by Thomas Cole. The painting took many ideas of both Romanticism and Dark Romanticism, summing up many of the thoughts of these groups into one painting. For example, there is a clear distinction between dark and light in the painting. The lighter side of the painting seems to be more towards the left side, having the sun being its focal point, light colored clouds, pale green grass and a bright ocean. The right side of the painting, however, holds a darker, mysterious side.

In, “The Minister’s Black Veil,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the emotions of horror, terror, and awe are drawn upon throughout the story, which follows the events and reactions of the citizens of a village after their resident minister suddenly starts to wear a black veil, which invokes discomfort and fear into the people. As with many of his stories, Hawthorne developed “The Minister’s Black Veil” around a symbol, which in this case is the veil. The veil represents that even the people that seem like they have nothing to hide or be ashamed of do, just as everyone else does. Hawthorne also makes the point of saying that although people do have secrets that they wish to not make a matter of, others still do not respect their privacy, and may even go out of their way to wonder and discuss the subject of the secret, without confronting the person themselves about it.

American Romanticism has been around for quite some time now, having made an incline in popularity in the early 1800’s. Two very popular stories associated with American Romanticism include: “The Minister’s Black Veil” published in 1832, and the “Fall of the House of Usher” which was published in 1839. Well, American Romanticism is “a movement of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that marked the reaction in literature, philosophy, art, religion, and politics from the neoclassicism and formal orthodoxy of the preceding period.” An example from the story of American Romanticism is, “And when she suggests that members of the community may interpret the veil as a symbol of great sin, he replies: “If I hide my face for sorrow, there is cause enough… and if I cover if for secret sin, what mortal might not do the same” (Nathaniel Hawthorne 129). America had just gained its independence from Great Britain followed by a war that ended just 17 years prior to the start of the Romantic period in writing. With America just getting on its feet and finding their voice in literature, they went through what seems to be a more odd stage in literature during this time period. This period in literature could be described as a time of finding idealism, and a time which writing was very subjective and imaginative.

In the short story "The Devil & Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, the main character's fate is going to hell because of his wrong decisions in life when he sold his soul to the Devil for wealth. Washington Irving reinforces his message about why you shouldn’t make decisions that may damn your soul with the use of romantic literary elements and satire. Religion was widely written about during 1824, the year “The Devil and Tom Walker” was written, due to the large religious population and the fascination with the Devil as an evil wandering spirit. When writing, Irving combines characterization with mood/setting to perpetuate the theme of romanticism in the story for the reader's mind.
