In The Great Gatsby, Daisy and Myrtle are both at fault for Myrtle’s death because Myrtle is foolish and Daisy is heedless. Because she is foolish, Myrtle is responsible for her own death. She ran in front of a moving vehicle. She stepped in front of a two-ton automobile. Pedestrians are not always faultless. Daisy is also responsible for Myrtle’s death because she is heedless. She was not paying attention to the road and did not stop. We know this because Tom speaks of, who he assumed to be, Gatsby, saying: “‘The God damned coward!’ he whimpered. ‘He didn’t even stop his car.’” (Fitzgerald 141).
