There are many things that feel wrong to us but if you have courage, you can stand up against it and maybe change it. When someone thinks that something is unjust or goes against their values, they may want to change it. The only problem is that the most people will just sit and become suppressed by the thing they think is wrong. You have to have courage and stand up against what you think is beyond your acceptance. In the novel Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, we are shown the horrors and oppression of the slaves but along with a story about a young girl and another man who opposes the unjust laws and learns to read. John runs away from his master and escapes to the north. What really surprises us is that he came back. On page 54, Mammy and John have this conversation; “‘Is that how you got these scars?’ He shook his head. ‘I ran’ ‘and got caught?’ ‘not the first time’“ this shows that John had run away but had enough courage to come back and try to help other slaves. Secondly, Sarny knows that learning to read and write is illegal for slaves but she end up letting John teach her. She learns the first letter of the alphabet (A for those who don’t know). On page 40, Sarny thinks to herself “A, I thought, Ayyy, Ahhh. There it is. I be reading.” Sarny has enough courage to let John teach her to read. Even with knowing the possible consequences, she has enough courage to stand up against the unjust laws of slavery and learn to read and write. Lastly, Sarny is caught writing. She gets so excited learning her first word BAG and starts writing it everywhere. “Wrote it all over. BAG, BAG, BAG” (page 61). It would take a lot of courage to actually go outside, with the danger of getting caught and whipped, and write. When Sarny goes outside and writes, she unconsciously uses all of her courage to stand up against the unjust
