3) In the musical Les Miserables, the major conflict with Jean Valjean can be compared to of the book Legend, and Day’s conflict. Both characters in each story, have been running away for their lives so they don’t get caught by authorities. In the movie Les Miserables, Jean Valjean starts out as a jailed, working in poor conditions, just because he stole a piece of bread. As he is released from prison Javert, the policeman, says that “Once a criminal, always a criminal” and tells him how shall be captured again. Years later, Jean Valjean pitches his old life and starts a new chapter, as mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer. Javert comes to serve as a jail guard and just happens to run into Jean Valjean, slightly recognizing his appearance. A man had been trapped under a carriage and Jean Valjean lifted him from under. Dumbfounded by his newfound strength, Javert realizes this man is who he seems and once was. After Jean Valjean realizes Javert is on to him, he escapes before getting busted by a Javert. In the other story Legend Day is running from the authorities due to him committing many crimes. After failing his Trial, Day escapes from his past to live without anything holding him down. One night, he breaks into a hospital looking for a cure for his sick brother. There he runs from police, only to encounter a soldier named Metias. There he stabs the soldier in the shoulder to stop him from catching him. There, Metias is murdered and it just so happens his sister June makes a
In this scene of the play, Juliet is met with the internal struggle of whether or not she will drink the vial Friar Laurence has given her as part of the plan. In the song the lyrics introduce with how “Some people watch, some people pray” “some people hope, some people pray.” I believe this is Juliet's internal conflict on how she is praying for a miracle for people to watch. The next line that the play reflects is where it says “Cause even heroes get the blues or any misery you choose we like to use and we were born to lose”. The plays reflects on how Juliet who is a main character or well Heroine of the story but despite that she stills feels sad and the misery she chooses is to fake
Romeo and Juliet is conflict and love. Conflict and love are both shown through characterization in all of the characters. In the beginning, we see Juliet 's character as a little young child who obeys her family duties. When she meets, Romeo, her character is taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. Juliet 's character is the source of conflict and we see this through her developing actions. Romeo creates Juliet into this powerful young women. Romeo is so important to Juliet that she does not want to loose him. Conflict begins to arise when things actually take off. Once they are together on the balcony, is when they both realize that they are meant for each other. That true love is true and that they are destined for the stars. True love is
Romeo and Juliet is a story based on conflict. The conflict in the story is Capulet against Montague. From ancient times, the two families have held grudges against each other. As the book states. “Two households, alike in dignity...from ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean (1.Prologue.1-4).” The grudge between the two families has led to fighting and even death.
In the book Allegiant, by Veronica Roth, there is one big conflict that causes the other conflicts throughout the book. The big conflict is that the Allegiant are uprising against Evelyn and the Factionless. The Bureau is in charge of the city, but the citizens do not know that they exist. To stop everyone from killing themselves, the Bureau decides to reset everyone's memories with the memory serum. Tobias joins an uprising against the Bureau. After the uprising, he realized that they were trying to find the death serum. Tobias felt bad for taking part in the rebellion and Tris was on the verge of breaking up with him. Then, Tris forms her own group and plans to save the city from the memory serum. One problem is that in order to save the city, Caleb has to die because of the death serum. Tobias and the others were trying to settle the dispute between his mother, Evelyn, and his father, Marcus. Instead of Caleb dying, Tris
Shakespeare is one of the most profound writers of all time. When he wrote his famous “Romeo and Juliet” he addressed many thematic concepts. One that most intrigued me was Civil Disorder. In this thematic concept Shakespeare becomes the king of puns. When he creates the quarrel between the Montagues and the Capulets we see his creativity in heated conversations.
Sacrifice is seen throughout the Les Miserables, because it is a prominent part of human living. Sacrifice is greater in those who have less. Hugo conveys sacrifice through the characters Jean Valjean and Fantine, showing how they sacrificed in order to gain a better life, self-forgiveness
Some people will do anything for those they love, no matter what the cost. In literature, this act of sacrifice is often exaggerated and glorified. Almost every novel contains some example of sacrifice, a giving up of something dear and precious without thought of material repayment. Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables, is no exception. It is, in fact, full to overflowing of sacrifice between its different characters. Two such characters are Eponine and Jean Valjean, who each sacrifice an extraordinary amount to other characters.
Throughout Romeo and Juliet the theme of conflict is conveyed in many forms, mostly through physical violence; reflected in the era of the Renaissance where there was political turmoil and many European nations were at war. Shakespeare presents the theme in other forms as well; family versus family, sacred versus profane, parent versus child and language versus inner conflict. Conflict is a key in the structure of the play; it is highlighted in the beginning, middle and end. As an audience we are constantly being reminded of conflict which is reflected within the era the play was written in. The Renaissance was the 'rebirth ' of classical learning and was also the time when Science challenged many traditional Christian beliefs which resulted in Catholics fighting Protestants; the Gunpowder plot and the Spanish Armada. Shakespeare chose to dramatise conflict as it was the context in which he was writing plays. It is therefore arguable that this period was characterised by irreconcilable opposites in politics, religion and art. Nothing in the world can exist without its opposite- just as love cannot exist without hate, violence cannot exist without peace.
I agree with the statement that in the novel Les Miserables, the author Victor Hugo is trying to say that human nature is basically good. In the most basic sense, the definition of good trying to do the right thing, even if there are negative consequences. It often means having to sacrifice and give up something to do the right thing. Throughout the book, many characters sacrifice their happiness and morals in order to do what they believe is the right and fair thing. Even when faced with serious consequences for being honest, characters more often than not still choose to do the right thing. Some may argue that Victor Hugo is saying that human nature is basically evil because some characters commit evil actions. However, in most cases, characters don’t always have evil intentions, their execution is just poor and makes them seem evil. Everyone thinks of themselves as a hero, almost everything a character does is because that’s what they believe is the right thing to do. Whether or not it really is could be up for debate but for the most part, most characters don’t have evil intentions and attempt to usually do the right thing. Victor Hugo is saying that as a whole, human nature is inherently good.

Many long term feuds will have some violence before the feud is resolved, and this is first shown through the fight between the servants of the Capulet’s and the Montague’s. In the beginning of act one, scene one, the servants of the Capulets are eager to start a fight with the Montagues because they disrespect them so much. Sampson, one of the Capulets’ servants, says, “I will bite my thumb at / them, which is a disgrace to them if they bear it” (1.1.43-44). In Shakespeare’s time, biting your thumb at someone was very disrespectful, and because even the servants were doing it, the feud must have spread from the main source of the conflict between the families to the servants. The feud spreads even further to the common people of Verona. The
for example: "thou wilt quarrel with a man that hath a hair more, or a
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the character Hamlet must deal with both external and internal conflict. Hamlet encounters many struggles and does not know how to cope with all of them. By having so many corrupt people in his life, he feels isolated from everyone because he does not know who to trust anymore. A result from this isolation leads Hamlet into depression and forces more issues to occur. Both inward and outward conflicts are displayed in the play when, Hamlet struggles with suicidal thoughts, wants to kill King Claudius, and is distraught over his mother’s hasty marriage with his uncle Claudius.
Les Miserables is a prime example of two individuals conflicted by the “letter of the law” and the “spirit of the law”. The two main characters, Jean Valjean and and Javert, have two different views on morality. There is a difference between the “letter of the law” and the “spirit of the law”. Obeying the what the laws specifically says defines the “letter of the law” and obeying the overall message of the law defines the “spirit of the law”.
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, tells the tale of two young lovers whose lives end in great tragedy. What makes their story so tragic is that despite their love for one another, their families are mortal enemies. Conflict is a central ingredient in Romeo and Juliet's sad fate. Although their love for each other is strong, it cannot overcome the deluge of conflict that surrounds them. Ultimately they are defeated by the conflicts of person vs person, person vs self, and person vs society.
