Framework for Competitor Analysis
One of the major models for competitive intelligence is the Porter’s model – ‘Framework for Competitor Analysis’. Diagram Reference: Strategy and the Business Landscape – Pankaj Ghemawat, 1999. Pearson
This model looks at competitor analysis from the perspective of competitor’s current business portfolio, current strategy and its current capabilities in terms of strengths and weaknesses. For an insight into the future, the company needs to understand the competitor’s mind-set in terms of competitor’s future goals in its various country markets and for various businesses. It is also essential to understand the competitor’s likely assumptions about itself and the industry.
Based on an understanding of the competitor’s current strategy and what drives the competitor, it is possible for a company to anticipate the competitor’s responses in the following four aspects:
• Does the current position of the competitor satisfy its needs?
• What moves or strategies will the competitor implement?
• Where is the competitor vulnerable?

Competitor analysis is a serious part of the organization therefore; Target must identify and address all issues pertaining to the business. Target must pinpoint the tangible competitors, and substitutes, evaluate opponents’ objectives, strategies, strengths and weaknesses, and opportunities and threats, and uncover what opponents Target should take on or stand clear of. Therefore, Target must analyze the company’s economic, sociocultural, technological, political, and future.
Weir’s message of perseverant hope most resonates with me due to The Martian’s ability to tie the story of the frontier to a modern scientific endeavor, rather than the naïve dream of a young adolescent. All the Pretty Horses, to me, read more as a cautionary tale of memorializing a nonexistent era and following this misconception until disaster. McCarthy demonstrates John Grady Cole’s growth throughout the novel from believing in the mythic West to slowly realizing the harsh truth that such a place never exists. The Martian, in contrast, tells a story of science, one which I can better contextualize with my twenty-first century worldview. Americans are constantly sharing their opinions about the government. In Stupid White Men by Michael Moore, he conveys his perspective. By putting several individuals on the spot, he reasons how the country went downhill, including the economic catastrophe, and the political, economic, and environmental issues. In addition, Moore touches on topics of racism and gender. Michael Moore provides readers with specific precedents that lead us to agree with his view on the country, “our Century 21 Nightmare!”
James Baron and David Kreps had given the Five-Factor model, which is based on Michael Porter’s Five Forces model of business analysis (Porter, 1980). These factors will influence the Competitive Intelligence system in any organization. These factors are External Environment, Workforce, Organizational Culture and Structure, Organizational Strategy, and Technology of Production and Organization of Work (Baron & Kreps, 1999). Lack of correspondence between any one of these factors can lead the firm’s CI practices to the failure.
Abstract: In this analysis, it is shown throughout the many different agencies how the intelligence cycle is interpreted. Within each of the different agencies everyone has their own way of obtaining information and different policies that they follow, within the constriction of the US constitution. The intelligence cycle states the many different steps taken to obtain intelligence from domestic to foreign information.
Companies often use a (CPM) – Competitive Profile Matrix to better understand their external environment as well as their competition within the industry they operate. The matrix identifies a company’s key competitors and draws a comparison using the industry’s critical success factors. The analysis also reveals a company’s strengths and weaknesses against its competition, making them aware of problematic areas needing improvement and also areas that are doing well and need to be protected (See Appendix F).
In general, manager’s look at competition has been too narrow. There is a broad set of competitors that need to be looked at, which are described in “The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy” by Michael E. Porter. The model explains that there are several other forces in the competition for profits that the strategist should be aware of when forming a stagey. Those forces determine the profitability of the industry and are the most important to look at when you are forming a strategy. These five forces are are the “industry structure” model which contain: New Entrants, Suppliers, Buyers, Substitutes, and Existing Competitors.
This model was articulated for the first time by Michael Porter in 1979 in his successful record-breaker book named “How competitive forces shape strategy” (Porter, p.78). Five forces are illustrated in following picture.

“Competitive strategy involves positioning a business to maximize the value of the capabilities that distinguish it from its competitor’s” (Porter 1980:47). A successful business plan requires first and foremost the formation of an appropriate strategy. Through the implementation of a suitable strategy, the company is able to obtain its own industry niche and gain an understanding of its customers (Porter 1985). Whichever strategy is adopted it must be adequately integrated within the firms goals and missions to achieve a competitive advantage (Parker and Helms 1992).
