Examples Of Change In Nonfiction Literature

Decent Essays

“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new” - Socrates. By this, Socrates means that people should not focus on the past, but instead focus on changing the future. Nonfiction literature often talks about change. The definition of change, as stated by Dictionary.com, is “the act of changing.” Some synonyms of change are, “alter”, “switch”, and “refine”. Some antonyms are, “stabilize”, “freeze”, and “fixation”. Without change people would still be stuck in the early ages. An example of change is women getting the right to vote. A non-example of change would be schools still being segregated. Authors of nonfiction literature often talk about change. Malala Yousafzi sparked change when she was shot in the head for speaking out against the Taliban for women’s education. She wrote a book about her experience titled, I am Malala. The Little Rock Nine are a group of African American students from Little Rock, Arkansas who were the first to integrate into the all white Central High. Diane Guerrero is an American actress whose parents were undocumented and were deported back to Colombia. She wrote a book outlining her experience called In the Country We Love: My Family Divided. Now, she is trying to make it easier for undocumented immigrants to become citizens. These authors use nonfiction literature to persuade their readers to be agents of change.
