Isn’t it amazing how humans throughout the centuries have clung to their ambitions and accomplished amazing feats? Surely it must be. However, what happens when someone clings to their blind ambitions? This problematic characteristic has wedged its way into humanity for many, many years. Why, even in Macbeth it’s a common theme that somehow relates to our modern society. Three prime examples of people who have blind ambitions are: Christy Clark, a British Columbian politician, Hillary Clinton, and the entirety of the U.S. government. No, you’re not seeing that wrong. All three of the above mentioned are victims of blind ambition, and, like Macbeth, it’s likely they won’t realize it until it’s too late. In The Tragedy of Macbeth, we …show more content…
Isn’t that what Macbeth did? He killed King Duncan in order to gain the throne, then continued to conceal the fact that he had done it. He even killed his loyal companion, Banquo, to prevent him from gaining the title as “King”. Now, she may not have murdered anyone, but Christy Clark sure isn’t that far off from Macbeth in the department of manipulation and lies. In 2016, Clark was accused of manipulating ethnic groups to earn their votes. She was also accused of disregarding public rules and regulations to get what she wanted, which was in turn, money and votes for her Liberal party. She so desperately wanted the votes and money for her party, that she didn’t pay any mind to what the public may think of her afterwards. Truly, she was a victim of blind ambition. As popular as power and money may seem when it comes to those with blind ambitions, they’re not always the cause to the effect. Sometimes it could be as simple as someone wanting to keep up their image. Hillary Clinton, for example, was involved in a scandal not long ago where she was accused of using a private server to send classified e-mails. In order to keep up her image, she lied. Later on, however, she confessed and apologized. Regardless of her apology, the fact that she denied the accusation to keep her image fresh, dropped her popularity with the people. Poor Hillary was trying so hard to keep the popularity of the people that she fell victim to
In William Shakespeare's play Macbeth, Macbeth's greed is what eventually killed him. His ambition combined with overwhelming power took him over and took his life. Macbeth is Thane of Glamis and of Cawdor, and the general of the army, but he still thirsts for more power. He attempted to wield the power of a king, but he was not suited for that kind of responsibility. He killed others out of paranoia. Due to his corrupt nature, he was killed. He was killed out of his greed to handle power he could not contain.
Ambitions can be defined as “a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work.” Yet this definition does not go into specifics of how one may work to achieve their ambitions. Ambitions can give an individual a guideline as to what they wish to achieve in their lives such as a grade they wish to obtain or a certain task they wish to master. Though the definition specifies hard work is often required to obtain the goal that had been set, the topic of personal limits are bound to come up.What may appear to be simply working hard to achieve a goal could appear as sabotage to not only oneself but to those around them. When an individual's methods of achieving a goal begin to be questioned by those around them, that ambition turns to blind ambition. Blind ambition is a figurative way of stating that one continues to pursue their own ambitions with no mind to their surrounding and the effects their actions have on others in their lives. Once an individual begins to work towards a goal with no mental and physical limitation
Very few producers of art can actually let their works claim the appellation 'classic.' For to create a piece of work - literature, art, or poetry, that stands the test of time, that proves the author's premise relevant not just in the period when he created it, but also in the generations that follow, is not an easy task. The works of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) have, more than once, proved worthy of the title 'classic.' Not only does his work hold up, as he wished, a mirror to his own society, but manages to reflect what is going on much later, and indeed, may be relevant well into the next millennium, if civilization continues to peruse Shakespeare's writing. In my own opinion, Lady Macbeth gets corrupted by power the most. For example, her opinion about murder is that if it is going to help her get what she wants, then she approves of it. When Macbeth has his doubts, Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth when she call upon “...spirits/That tend on mortal thoughts...” to “Stop up th’ access and passage to remorse/That to compunctious visitings of nature/Shake my fell purpose...” (1.5.41-42 and 45-47). What Lady Macbeth is saying here is that if she would do anything to make her husband, Macbeth, King. This shows hat all she wants is power and nothing
A large part of William Shakespeare’s genius is attributed to his talent in examining human nature through his works. By weaving certain themes throughout his plays and poems, Shakespeare indirectly projected messages about the inherent fallacies of mankind. Such is the case with Macbeth. As classic literature goes, there are numerous themes found throughout the script. One of the most prevalent (if not the most prevalent) themes is that of blind ambition. It’s justifiable to say that blind ambition is the driving force of the plot. Nearly every major event in Macbeth was instigated, or, at the very least, influenced by various characters’ ambitious tendencies. The characters’ decisions, their influence over other characters, and moral degradation all exemplified the effect that blind ambition had.
Throughout life, greed has always played a role in people’s actions whether they are aware of it or not. Greed is a very powerful thing that can affect someone in a negative way. No one realizes how much it affects them until something bad happens and it’s too late. People will do whatever it takes just to get their wants fulfilled. They don’t think about the outcome or care what happens just as long as they get what they want. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, greed corrupts Macbeth which then creates his downfall.
Throughout the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the reasoning of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is completely subverted and undermined by their insatiable ambition. Macbeth was at first reasonable enough to keep his ambition in check, however it eventually became to strong for even Macbeth and therefor over powered him. To the contrary, Lady Macbeth was overcome by her ambition from the very beginning. Reasoning was abandoned after the decision to kill Duncan was made. At that point we see no serious questioning of the motives of the three witches when they told their cunning and misleading predictions. Macbeth even went as far as to ask for their advise a second time - this second time would of course lead to his downfall. The decision to
For centuries, society has mistakenly classified ambition as a virtue. This may lead individual's to strive to gain power through violence. Similarly, in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the increasing ambition of the protagonist drives him to achieve his goals, despite descending into narcissism. Granted that, Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth into killing Duncan which lead him to his killing streak. At the beginning of the book, Macbeth was a fair and good man.
As popular music producer, rapper, and artist, Fetty Wap once said “My whole thing is loyalty. Loyalty over royalty; word is bond.” as humans we see symbols in nearly every form of literature, from urban pop culture to shakespeare. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare a loyal lord the king ends up receiving a new title and in turn receives more power and becomes next in line to the throne. As he realizes his new found greed for power Macbeth ends up assassinating the current king, King Duncan, he also is influenced by more greed and kills his best friend, Banquo, in an attempt to stop his son from overthrowing him. Eventually the people of scotland become aware of his tyranny and get Duncan's kin to overthrow Macbeth and end his reign
As a result, she stated the following, “Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood.” Through this she begs the spirits to take away any sympathy within in her in order to have the wit, desire, and drive her husband lacked of in order to become royalty. Through Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare shows there’s no such thing as impossible on the way to getting what one wants. In addition to giving up her femininity, Lady Macbeth also sacrifices her morals by convincing her husband to kill the king, when failing to do so; she states, “When you durst do it, then you were a man.” In other words she convinces Macbeth to kill King Duncan, despite knowing what a horrid crime that was. The struggle to go through anything standing in her way caused her to lose herself as well as her sanity. After realizing what she had caused, she began to lose her mind. She would constantly see her hands covered in blood by those who had been murdered along the way. Unable to get rid of the image in her head, led her to eventually commit suicide.
Greed and ambition are traits that everyone has. Depending on how much of that greed and ambition the person has will determine their outcome. Greed is the intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food and ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. Ambition can be seen as a good thing when used toward good goals. For example, a student being ambitious to get an A-plus on a test. Greed is intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food, therefore, when combined with ambition, it can lead toward evil personalities. Which is displayed in the play “Macbeth” in Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, their desire to kill Duncan and become king and queen. However, their plan quickly unraveled and lead to Macbeth’s downfall. The person that was responsible for Macbeth’s downfall was Macbeth himself due to his inability to say “no” to Lady Macbeth and……...
William Shakespeare was clearly trying to warn us of the evils in the world when he wrote Macbeth. Unfortunately, being human requires the inevitable vulnerability towards evil temptations; that is just how we were made. Greed is one of humanity’s worst traits, and it infects so many people as it traverses across the world. Thousands of people are lured into the hands of ambition as well, as they do whatever it takes to obtain power and wealth. These epidemics are definitely not helped by the way the world is today. As the saying goes, “the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer”. This causes more and more people to do drastic things, including evil things in order to live good lives, however, these lives they live will never be good lives if they are filled with evil. For evil creates paranoia and heavy guilt upon a person’s conscience.
In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the theme of Blind Ambition which connects to today’s society. The theme of Blind Ambition connects to society because, in the play Macbeth often goes alone to talk aloud or will ignore what’s going on as he did in the play when the Weird Sisters told him he was gonna be king. “Into the air, and what seemed corporal melted, As breath into the wind. Would they had stayed!” (Macbeth, Line 85). That can compare to today’s society because most people tend not to notice what’s going on around them. For example, most people have no idea what Trump is doing during his presidency because they are focused on ‘more important things in life’.
Ambition is what motivates people to achieve a certain thing in their life. However, many fail if their ambition is too big and unreasonable. This is definitely the case for Macbeth in the William Shakespeare's play Macbeth. Macbeth's ambitious causes him to disregard his loyalty to Duncan. Moreover, Macbeths desires lead him to be immoral, going to extremes in order to achieve success. Ultimately, Macbeths deep aspirations for power demonstrates being over ambitious will end in disaster. Therefore, in the play Macbeth, Macbeths ambition leads him to corrupt his morality, resulting in his downfall
The story of Macbeth is about Macbeth's ambitions for power, and how he will do anything to obtain that power. With the help of his wife and a prophecy, given to him by the witches, he has become an evil monster capable of committing hideous acts. Do his ambitions for becoming king make him evil, or is it his actions in pursuit of that power? Macbeth explains his actions by saying, "Fair is foul, and foul is fair." -(Macbeth, Act I, Scene I), he is expressing his confusion about whether his actions are good or evil. His ambition for becoming king runs deep, and he knows that murdering is wrong. Yet, he is willing to set aside all of his beliefs and morals to reach his goal. He describes himself and his dark ambitions by saying: "The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step on ... which I must fall down, or else o'erleap, for in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black
