It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it. Lord Acton once said, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This quote suggests that absolute power will negatively impact even the best of leaders. In this play, the main character, Macbeth goes through a metamorphosis from a noble and brave warrior, into a evil bloodthirsty tyrant because he’s corrupted by his ambitious power.
At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is seen as a brave soldier who is loyal to the King (“For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name—Disdaining fortune, with his brandish'd steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valor's minion carved out his passage Till he faced the slave (Act 1, Scene 2)”) but is corrupted by the witches prophecies and by his and Lady Macbeth's ambition. This is because of the weakness of Macbeth's character, the strong power of Lady Macbeth and how she is easily able to influence him. …show more content…

He knows what he has done when in Act 3, Scene 4, Page 7 he says, “ I have walked so far into this river of blood that even if I stopped now, it would be as hard to go back to being good as it is to keep killing people” what this quote means is that he has done so much killing that there’s no point in going back. He had done so much evil that he’s ashamed of himself, the text in Act 2, Scene 2, Page 4 says, “To know my deed, ’twere best not know myself” which means that rather than have to think about his crime, he prefers to be completely
