Abigail actions was the cause of the witch trials. She lied and caused innocent people to die. All for the love of a man. In the crucible written by A Miller the most despicable character would be Abigail Williams because she is a pretender, kills innocent people, and has no consequences for her actions. Abigail is a pretender. She pretends to act possessed. Also, she would pretend to faint. If she never would have pretended, the witch trials would have never started. Abigail kills innocent people. She would say that people worship the devil. She would accuse people of witchcraft. Without her accusation this would never have happened. Abigail has no consequences for her actions. She would lie and never get in trouble for what she
Abigail started out as a good girl , the reverend’s niece, but she made her first terrible mistake during their young teenage lives. Abigail had an inappropriate relationship with a married man named Proctor. That lead to her next mistake of dancing in the woods with a group of girls trying to curse their crush’s wives. This time she got caught by her uncle and had to start several lies. Her punishment after all of her lies and crimes was
Abigail Williams was the person who was most responsible for the chaotic witchcraft situation in Salem. Abigail has an endless gift of dissembling. Abigail believes that by concealing, lying, and not speaking the truth she wouldn’t be whipped or executed. “Abigail: Please don’t hurt me! Mary Warren: I’m not hurtin’ her! Danforth: Why does she see this vision? Abigail: She see’s nothin’ Mary Warren: Abby you mustn’t! All The Girls: Abby you mustn’t!” (1149). There are no spirits there. They don’t see nothing. Abigail is just making a show for Danforth since they are all in the courtroom. Abigail is looking for someone to blame to make herself look
Abigail is one of the most manipulative and truly evil characters in The Crucible. She makes
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller in 1692 a thing called the Salem Witch trials started. People around Salem were accused of being a witch for no reason at all. If you were a single old lady with a bunch of cats and marks on you, you were considered a witch. A girl named Abigail basically ran the town. Everyone was scared of her, she had a lot of power.
In Act 3, Abigail goes all out and lies hysterically. In doing so she hoped to get what she wants, attention and most importantly, John Proctor. Intentionally, Abigail started acting out because she realized she had the power to turn in anyone she wanted, and all she had to do was accused them as a witch. The girls had realized what she was doing and caught on, starting to do the same as her. Abigail and the girls started calling out random people, and so did others after believing that witchcraft may be a possible thing.
Like when she mentions “oh Mary this is a black art to change your shape. No I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it’s God’s work I do” (Abigail, 1209). Mary would then state “Abby I’m Here” (Mary,1209). Abigail is lying just to get things her way and gets away with it. Therefore, making Abigail a liar and bothersome for
One should not be judged for a singular action, however Abigail's happened to be quite immense and hard to let go of, producing repercussions. Still, it should not be forgotten that one cannot be blamed for their past foolish mistakes under a corrupt society and at such a young
Trying to put herself in a good light, Abigail makes up stories, fakes, and lies to make herself look innocent. However, it is really the people like Elizabeth and Marry Warren, whom she is accusing, that are innocent. To get back at Elizabeth, Abigail pretends to have stomach pain and accuses Elizabeth of performing witchcraft on her. She fakes this while scene, screaming and crying and even sticking a needle in her stomach.
In the play she tells the girls,”let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know i can do it…”, so the girls need to agree with her. When they go trials, whatever lie Abigail says they will agree with her and when she screams they have to mimic her. She manipulates each and every single one of the girls because she doesn’t want to damage her reputations by having a different testimony than them.
Abigail was a liar and she had the rest of the young girls up under her wing. As Abigail stated in (act 1 463) “No one was naked!” You mistake yourself, uncle!” Abigail was lying about her and the other girls dancing in the woods so her uncle wouldn’t of think she had a bad name or was witched. Not only was Abigail a very good liar she was also a very good manipulator. In (act 1) Abigail said so many things to make the others look like they were wrong. For instance, Goody Proctor. (464) Abigail kept telling her uncle how Goody Proctor hated her and saying bad things about Goody Proctor trying to keep her name clean in the village when everyone knew she was a bad girl.
This is later confirmed when she threatens to “come to [them] in the black of some terrible night and … bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder” (Pg.175) Mary Warren and Betty Parris if they dare to tell the truth. This shows her determination at killing Elizabeth Proctor and securing her own reputation. Unlike many naive villains in other literatures, Abigail sets out a meticulous scheme to frame Elizabeth. First, she witnesses Mary Warren leaving a needle in a doll. Then she “[sticks] two inches [of a needle] in the flesh of her belly”(pg. 203) to frame Elizabeth of performing witchcraft. So mendacious is Abigail that she is willing to injure herself to accomplish her plan. Under her beautiful appearance also lays a manipulative heart. She is capable of manipulating not only the girls into doing things her way, but also the members of the court to her advantage. When questioned by Danforth whether the spirits she has seen are illusion, Abigail steps it up a notch by making the members of the court feel sorry for her and madly refutes, “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people—and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a—” (Pg.210) This, following by Elizabeth's failure to tell the truth and the girl’s verisimilar acting toward the “yellow bird”, further demonstrates her manipulative power which brings the court in her favor. Altogether, many
Abigail Williams is really to blame for the Crucible. With her skills to manipulate, lie, and her entire group of girls supporting her; it is obvious that she is the one to start it all. That really shows what having power can do to people. Abigail’s skills show how having power can corrupt somebody and if they are not in control of their powers, it will
There are many characters in The Crucible that are bad. While many of these characters are bad the worst of them all is Abigail. What makes a character a character truly despicable. Think of any could villain in a story. The villain is manipulative, you never see a villain do their own dirty work. The villain usually has no distain for human life and will do anything to reach their goals. The villain also causing the problem that the hero of the story has to overcome. Abigail is the most despicable character in The Crucible.
Furthermore Abigail has shown she can not be trusted. For example, she lied about conjuring spirits in the woods and when the other girls said they should tell the truth she told them they would be hanged so we have to lie. She would say are make any one tell a lie to stay out of trouble. She accused others of witchcraft
If Abigail was not worried about the hysteria that will start because of the accusations she will later receive she would not have told herself and others to lie about it, showing that people will lie in face in hysteria.
