A Hero’s Place
Heroes are the people we look up to and aspire to be like. They are the ones who watch over us and are there to protect us. We don’t see heroes like we see other members of society, we see heroes as extraordinary people who’re more brave than anyone else. However, a hero could be anyone around you. A hero may not always be someone with extraordinary powers, but they’re someone who has heart and will constantly fight for the greater good no matter what. Beowulf was seen as a god amongst men during his time. This is a way we see a lot of heroes portrayed. Even before the plot of Beowulf, Beowulf had accomplished many feats, even as a child. When he was younger, he raced in icy waters filled with terrible monsters. Beowulf was regarded as great because he did so many things that were impossible at his time. People seen this and were astonished. Winning battles as well as challenges that pushed him to his limit, he never failed to give thanks to the lord. Consequently, this gave Beowulf the image that he was immortal through god’s protection. For example, after Beowulf slayed Grendel and was celebrated for it with many gifts, Hrothgar spoke of Beowulf as a “man, with the lord’s assistance (who)… has accomplished something none...” of the men in the kingdom could do.

The story of Beowulf is and epic poem. Beowulf is significant and glorified he’s on a quest to figure out who was the descendant of Cain. Beowulf showed himself to be strong and responsible leader because he wanted to be honored by the king. Beowulf possesses the characteristic of a hero because he fights for noble cause, he follows a code of honor, and he possesses strength and courage that is greater than anyone else. There were three major fights between Grendel’s Mother and the Dragon.
Beowulf is a mighty hero. He has impacted people’s lives for the better. Beowulf hasfought for his country and for what he thinks is right. He crosses paths with the enemy to disableall the conflicts that they have with each other and the country that they live in. It resolves in adefeat between Beowulf and Grendel and it ends the misery and mixed conflicts between eachother with what they had.
He is like today's heroes the men and women that are first responders and in the military. Due to that he accepts the call to challenge the monster named Grendel, and he even fears the most evil that ever lived, Beowulf place in society is well high. The reason that Beowulf is so high in society is that he is a noble man, in the story he states that he will fight Grendel with his bear hands, “Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I.” this says on page 48, that he will fight the monster with nothing but his bear hands.
Beowulf’s people describe him as the strongest and he has the Geat's trust; therefore, when he found out about Grendel, Beowulf knew he was capable to fight. This shows that he was a hero of high status and legendary importance. His goal was to “purge all evil from this hall.” (Beowulf 48) and that was what he did. The Geats saw Beowulf as confident and he saw himself like that as well. The gasconade exemplified Beowulf as greedy “they have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping with my enemies’ blood” (Beowulf 152). The qualities of a hero are noticed in Beowulf throughout his first two battles.
With Beowulf and Grendel's reputation , backstory, and their famous and infamous moments back to back, we can determine who truly was the knight in shining armour, and the great sin that inhabited the nordic world. Thanks to Seamus Heaney’s translations of the original Beowulf poem, we can now fully understand the famous norse hero, Beowulf. Beowulf is a illustrious viking warrior who is quite famous among his fellow thanes for his achievements ,boasts , superhuman strength against fallen foes, and his selflessness. Hsi most familiar achievements are “ saving the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and later, from Grendel’s mother.” “ He then returns to his county and dies in old age a vivid fight against dragon.”

What others deem impossible, a hero makes possible. There are only a few great heroes that come about in this time and Beowulf is definitely one of them. He is a great warrior and leader, a perfect description for him. Heroes only came along once in a while in this culture but it was well known when they did.
Since Beowulf was the only one who able to beat Grendel and his mom in a fight, King Hrothgar’s people look at him as a hero.
This poem also uses a lot of religion throughout the story and so Beowulf is pretty much depicted as a god in the story. All he does is fight monsters and help people. The story is a combination of Christianity and warrior values. Beowulf is the amazing and well-known hero because of the battles that he’s been involved in and has won because he puts all of his own trust into the hands of god and that’s why he is such a good warrior. There are also some pagan values that Beowulf possesses which is things such as, loyalty, courage, strength, and just a good reputation among all the people that know him. Which makes him into such a great example of what a hero should exactly be like. Beowulf only survives through the protection he receives from god and throughout the entire story Beowulf countlessly acknowledges god as his one and only protector.
