In the music video, many rhetorical strategies were used to enhance the experience of the audience. For example, one scene in the video introduced the protagonist –Mika, who is a high school kid that gets bullied by his classmates. And by his depress expressions; we can’t help but to create sympathy to the character. Meanwhile, such idea to play on audience’s emotional feeling is exactly the rhetorical strategies of Pathos. Secondly, an interesting shot of Mika and Ariana Grande were presented by them mixing a pot of rats, and poisons. We can assume that they are crazy people at this point because the ingredients they put in the soup makes it more of a witch crafts than an actual food. But the final scene explains the purpose of the soup,
Pathos is an emotional appeal in which the advertisers hope that the consumers will allow their claim. Say for instance most people will notice a puppy behind what looks like to be a rusty cage. Seeing a cage like that, makes some wonder how bad the conditions are that the puppy is living in. then there is the puppy who
While those clips are being shown, the song ‘In the Arms of an Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan is being played in the background. Slides with different statistics are being shown as well. The song “In the Arms of an Angel” is the major aspect of the commercial that really sets the tone. The tone of the song is depressing and gloomy but grabs the attention of the audience at the same time. The main point of the commercial is to convince the audience to “be an angel”, by saving the abused animals dying in the shelters. The song used is a perfect tool to convince the audience to be an angel and help the animals. Even though the music is a large part of setting the tone, the clips and pictures are equally as moving. Showing pictures of abused and suffering animals is a great way to get the audience’s attention and cause them to become sympathetic to the animals. Very few people in the world are unfazed when they see a video or picture of a helpless and suffering dog or cat. I looked at a lot of the related videos on YouTube and many of them are reaction videos. The videos show the audience’s reaction to the commercial. In more than 99 percent of the videos that I saw the viewer is in tears at the end. If a commercial that brings the audience to tears is not a perfect example of pathos then I don’t know what is.
The appeal to pathos seems to be present, depressing tone in this article and pulls the heart strings of his audience many times, For Example he states that “There are more like him on the street every day”. “Old folks have no business living in gutter. Even if they recused, its often way too late” (Fagan). By that he is putting guilt mode on his audience to persuade them into thinking act now before it’s too late, and that will lead the brain to go into rush
The film utilises emotional appeals, or pathos, to convince its audience more so than probably any other technique. Perhaps the
The video Love not Loss includes multiple forms of pathos. The first form of pathos is in the beginning of the ad, when the narrator is talking about how all of our waste and consumerism is killing off habitats is and threating numerous species. The second form of pathos is when the big white words “Is anyone listening” flashes across the screen it evokes a form of guilt. The third form of pathos comes towards the end when you see kids playing in nature and their eyes are full of wonder and joy. The final form of pathos is in the ending when you see all these people from different walks of life come together to help save nature. The people don’t come together because they feel guilty, they come together because they share a love for nature.
Knowing that this will provoke the reader's emotions and pull them in. She relies on using pathos, because she knows that if she reaches out to the audience's heart that she will be able to persuade them easier. Another area where she used pathos is when she claims“the horror of creeping depression or delusions that of peer derision, the sound of the C word in the hallways: crazy, man, he’s crazy, haven’t you seen him, didn’t you hear?” speaking of how us and others respond to mental illnesses. She uses the rhetorical device of pathos to make her claim seem more convincing and
The appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos are used everyday in many instances. A commercial is just one instance, and Gatorade commercials use them very well. The specific Gatorade commercial I chose to use was the one where Kevin Durant has a nightmare about being blocked by Dwyane Wade that aired in 2013. Kevin Durant doesn’t want that dream to come true so he practices very hard all while using Gatorade products. Meanwhile Dwyane Wade has a nightmare that he gets dunked on by KD, so he decides to use Gatorade products while he practices. The commercial is essentially saying that if you use Gatorade products that you will achieve your goals easier, and be more like the great NBA players that use the products as well.
She establishes herself as a parent of a four year old which connects her to her topic. Because she has a child and can experience this technology issue first hand, she gains credibility in giving her information. What are some examples of pathos in this speech?
The most obvious rhetorical device present in the video is pathos. Pathos is an appeal to the sadness or emotions of the audience. The video maintains a somber or morbid tone from start to finish. That along with being filmed in black and white pressures the audience into feeling depressed. Watching the gang destroy the main character’s house really makes the audience fell very sympathetic.
For example, Donald Trump is one of the most hated men in America and uses pathos for his campaign. Although he may attract some voters, he thoroughly uses propaganda, which trashes his opponent, Hillary and praises his side. In the 2004 election race, the candidates would use the 9/11 tragedy to appeal and try to get to people’s emotional side. Furthermore, this did not work as people were outraged that the candidates would try to use their emotion from 9/11 as fuel for their fire. Although, Pathos for the most part is effective. The commercial for Drinking and Driving is a pathos driven topic fraught with emotion. It shows the aftermath of the driver’s bad decision and the consequences of his
Furthermore, the fact that the audio dovetails with the images seen on screen is also a persuasive technique. Where Noriega throws flowers out to the crowd, the corresponding words in the song are; "I love You". By using sarcasm and dovetailing it with the music, a powerful persuasive technique is effective.
Nicholas Carr addresses and adapts to his audience by effectively using pathos, a rhetorical appeal. The author captures his audience by appealing to their emotions. For example, Carr explains on page five,
In the Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Walls uses pathos to make her point. Pathos is a rhetorical device that appeals to your emotions. “When other girls came in and threw away their lunch bags in the the garbage pails, I’s go retrieve them. I couldn’t get over the way kids tossed out all this perfectly good food: apples, hard-boiled eggs, packages of peanut-butter crackers, sliced pickles, half-pint cartons of milk, cheese sandwiches with just one bite taken out because the kid didn’t like the pimentos in cheese,” (Walls 173). Walls uses this device frequently in her book to appeal to the reader’s emotions when she talks about her family or her personal experiences. This quote shows how everyday, Walls constantly had to scavenge for food. This tugs at your heart because you couldn’t imagine
Malala implements pathos into I Am Malala. Its purpose is to tap into the readers emotions and create empathy for the unfortunate individuals, for example “ There are thousands of oppressed children without an education…”(Yousafzai). Her point is to raise awareness to those blinded to this reality, to do so she uses this emotional appeal to grasp the reader's attention. Many american citizens fail to see what is truly going on beyond our borders. Americans have and still are blind to this reality, this is why malala makes it her mission to raise awareness of the unseen oppressions. Emotional appeal is used plentiful in I Am Malala
Her use of pathos allows her to connect with the audience on an emotional level and helps drive home her argument.
