Thank you for giving me the opportunity to chat with you for a few minutes today.
Let's start with something very basic - the definition of the word "mentor." Webster's Dictionary defines a "mentor" as "a close, trusted, and experienced counselor or guide" and secondarily as "a teacher, tutor, or coach." Webster's definition of "mentor" doesn't put much meat on the bones of what we think of as a mentor.
My interest and belief in the importance of mentoring are, of course, informed in large part by my personal experiences. What I hope to share with you some of my experiences over the years, give you a somewhat broader concept of how I view mentoring beyond the more traditional look and then challenge all of you, both senior and newer members. Don’t let your hesitations hold you back from one of the most beneficial tools to developing your role as a leader.

That should give you some ideas on areas where you could improve. Identify people in the organization who have insight into those areas. Put together a game plan and take it step by step. The sky’s the limit. Just remember to return the favor once you start working your way up the ladder by never forgetting the little guys. Clearly, leadership is an issue that affects all of us. Not only are we impacted by it, but also, we are all called upon to exercise it. Whether we are asked to become involved in a club or the local district, guiding young minds, leading a family, standing for what is right, or organizing a dinner, a carpool, or a household, everyone has a leadership role to
Clutterbuck & Megginson (1999, p.17) describe mentoring as being like ‘standing in front of a mirror with a trusted other, who can help you see things that you do not know how to see, or that have become too familiar for you to notice’. It is a helping relationship between an individual with potential and an individual with expertise. This multi-dimensional relationship is a partnership between those in similar roles, who can support each other. A number of roles of the mentor have been listed by Bolton (2010, p.193): role model, enabler, teacher, encourager, counsellor, befriender, facilitator, coach, confidante, supporter and ‘un-learner’. To be successful roles and responsibilities of those involved need to be clear and they need to be matched to each other and understand expectations of them.
"Mentoring is a special quality, skill set and attitude," she says. "The benefits are not only between the mentor and mentee, but the future generations."
As stated in an article by Christopher Vogler “The mentor helps the hero in some way, furnishing them with important skills and advice. They may appear at important moments to help the hero get over an obstacle, then disappear. Typical mentors are old and wise. Although they may also be younger, they are still likely to be older than the hero as they offer their superior knowledge and experience in support. Perhaps once they were a young hero themselves.” (Vogler). To put in other words, a mentor is typically an older being with knowledge that provides the student with important skills and advice. I agree with the author that a mentor provides important skills and advice, which confirms my statement because a mentor provides skills to the student to better them. An example of this archetype is Micky in the movie Rocky. He is an older man with experience and knowledge that he teaches Rocky. He takes it on as his responsibility to make Rocky the best fighter he can be, and this makes Micky his mentor. This relates back to the article because Rocky receives skills and advice from his mentor like stated in the
A Learning Mentor is a relatively new concept in the field of education and is used within schools to support them in raising standards.
Mentoring relationships has its roots beginning in ancient Greek mythology, when Odysseus (a.k.a. Ulysses) entrusted Mentor with his son, Telemachus, while he left to fight the Trojan War. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, left home for 20 years on the famous journey that Homer ccalled the Odyssey. Mentor was responsible for raising Telemachus, shaping his character and helping him make wise decisions as he grew up to be a man. Eventually, Telemachus begins searching for his father, and Mentor joined him. The myth says that the Greek goddess Athena assumed Mentor’s form for the purpose of giving advice to Odysseus (Shea, 1997). Mentor’s name, with a lower-case “m,” has passed into our language as a shorthand term for wise and trusted counselor, advisor, teacher and friend. Mentoring is where a person invests time and energy to help another person grow and learn (Shea, 1997). “Mentor served as a coach, teacher, guardian, protector, and kindly parent. Mentor shared wisdom, promoted Telemachus’s career, and actively engaged him in a deep personal relationship (BOOK – Johnson –Ridley, xxx, p. xv). Like today the mentoring model is pairing a mentor and a mentee where the mentor is a role model and provides direction and guidance.
Mentoring takes many forms and has many purposes, however, no uniform definition of mentoring exists (Bochke, 2001). Caffarella (1993) defined mentoring as “intense caring relationships in which person(s) with more experience work with less experienced person(s) to promote both professional
The Department for Health (2001) defined a mentor as an individual who facilitates learning and supervises and assesses students in the practice setting.
Mentoring is a process where a more experience person creates a supportive relationship with an inexperienced, mostly younger person with the aim of providing information and advice. The process of mentoring must benefit both parties.
There are people in everyone's lives who have played a significant role in developing their personality or have been a mentor or a guide or a positive influence all their life. My oldest brother, Kaleb Mortenson, has been all of these as he has helped me with life advice and inspired me technologically and musically.
I want to take the time to say thank you for all you have taught me about professionalism and the great advice you have given me along the way. I have sincerely enjoyed the time I have spent with you at Teach for America. It was such an amazing pleasure having you as my mentor. You were always available to help me whenever you can and consistently checking-in with me to ensure I was on track, which I really appreciate your kindness. I’m so happy that I got the opportunity to have a different mentor because it provided me with new experiences and new skills that I needed. It has been great getting to know you at TFA.
Mentoring for the mentor is about challenging himself to perform to greater capabilities while nurturing a mentee and stretching them to realise their full potential. Mentors counsel, tutor and guide their mentees in developing themselves.
Van Gogh’s “Arles period” lasted between 1888 and 1889. This was a time when Van Gogh moved from Paris to Arles, France to get away from the fast-moving life that was Paris in 1888. The Arles Period was a successful and experimental period for Van Gogh; serving as an opportunity for both new work and inspiration. One of Van Gogh’s most infamous Arles paintings, The Night Café, can be credited by the influence of Arles.
Fashion has always been my outlet. As a soft-spoken southern girl, my style has always been my way to break free and boldly show a part of myself that was hidden behind my shy demeanor. Giving me a new perspective of the world from a young age fashion encouraged me to try new things and market myself. Freshmen year of high school I turned those new skills and courage into actions by working with my school’s JROTC program to sell candy and other treats to the other students. I took this as an opportunity to meet and talk to new people, it was also a way to make a little money. Unexpectedly, I gained so much knowledge about people what they like don’t like, how presentation can directly affect if a potential customer makes a purchase, as well as how important it is to keep up with customers buying patterns. With that information, I was able to sell an astonishing nine hundred and fifty-seven treats in just four months.Through this minor achievement I proved to myself that I could do anything that I wanted to do with a lot of hard and consistency.
With the development of the more organic and less formal organisational structures the role of mentors has shifted with these changes. Unlike previously where mentors where seen as formal trainers who taught newcomers the processes and got them acquainted with the cultures and the systems within the organisation. Which required good interpersonal skills and a good knowledge of the activity or tasks the mentee would have to undertake, and be able to effectively relay or demonstrate the tasks or activities to the mentee. As opposed to more recently where a mentor would have to be more of an emotional counselor and demonstrate more skills than were traditionally required from
The United States also had a huge impact in the war by making a program called Lend-Lease. Roosevelt talked with the press about announcing his response to Britain’s need for money. That was to give Britain money, and that’s what the isolationist were scared of. He wasn’t planning to loan money to Britain, but to give them munitions and armaments. It’s also going to the Soviet Union after Germany invaded it in 1941. Also 38 countries would receive Lend-Lease supplies that costs over $40 to $50 billion. After weeks of debating, the congress announced to allow warrant nation to
