It is important to understand why research within the nursing profession is essential. Amongst healthcare workers worldwide nurses are the largest professional group. Within the UK nurses and midwives represent the largest work force within the NHS. They are also the profession that has the most person to person contact with patients. As the decisions and actions that nurses make affect the lives of the whole population, it makes sense that nursing practice should be based on evidence (Parahoo 2006). Nurses are expected to deliver competent, high quality care in a compassionate but also cost effective manner. To accomplish these goals, nurses continually need to access and evaluate new information and incorporate this into their clinical decision making (Polit and Beck 2010).
Evidence based practice (EBP) is the use of the

I also performed a search on the Cochrane library. The Cochrane library is a collection of six databases that contain systematic reviews for health and social care (Aveyard 2014). It is argued that the literature available at the Cochrane library is the ‘gold standard’ of research. Unfortunately, the search within the Cochrane library only produced one piece of research which had to be excluded as it as related to paediatrics and did not fit the criteria for the search and could not be included for this dissertation.
Once I had chosen the primary research I wanted to include, I began to summarise each piece of research, this allowed me to identify key factors of each piece of research such as; principle findings, sample, design, data collection and data analysis of each piece of research. This information allowed me to develop the research matrix (Appendix 2). The matrix is a table which allows the research to be broken down into different categories and allows me to compare the various pieces of
Pressure ulcers occur over bony prominences when skin is compressed for long periods of time, affecting the blood supply to certain areas, leading to ischaemia development (Waugh and Grant, 2001). Compression of skin is caused by pressure, shearing and friction, but can also occur due to pressure exerted by medical equipment (Randle, Coffey and Bradbury, 2009). NICE (2014) states that the prevalence of pressure ulcers in different healthcare settings in December 2013 was 4.7%, taken from data available for 186,000 patients. The cost of treating ulcers can vary depending on severity from £43 up to £374 (NICE, 2014). Evidence based practice skills are essential in nursing as it allows the best available evidence to be used to improve practice and patient care, while improving decision-making (Holland and Rees, 2010). I will be critiquing two research papers; qualitative and quantitative, using a framework set out by Holland and Rees (2010), and will explore the impact on practice. Using a framework provides a standardised method of assessing quality and reduces subjectivity.
According to Stevens (2013), the call to develop and implement evidence-based practice (EBP) within all healthcare disciplines is fueled by legislative demands for improvement in standard medical metrics such as mortality and morbidity. However, increasing demands by the public for evidence related to the metrics and outcomes of such concepts as quality of life illustrate what may be more important to the client (Stevens, 2013). This client-directed focus has resulted in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) (Stevens, 2013). "The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) helps people make informed health care decisions, and improves health care delivery and outcomes, by producing and promoting high integrity, evidence-based information
Research, quality improvement (QI), and evidence-based practice (EBP) all play an important role in the field of healthcare and are essential for the delivery of quality patient care. While each involves teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity there are distinct differences between them.
Venous thromboembolism refers to the formation of a blood clot in a blood vessel. While clots can form in an artery or a vein, this article focuses only on clots that occur in a vein ("," 2015). Critically ill patients are at an increased risk of a venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to VTE can manifest as a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or a pulmonary embolism (PE). Risk factors include venous stasis, vascular injury, and hypercoagulable disorders. A majority of ICU patients carry at least one risk factor for VTE; additional risk factors are considered to have a cumulative effect…it is impossible to predict which patients will experience a
The incorporation of evidenced-based practice (EBP) into nursing practice is supported by research to positively improve the quality of care and improve patient outcomes. EBP is important to the nursing profession because it also leads to increased job satisfaction, teamwork, and levels of engagement in clinicians (Melnyk, et al., 2017). Miniature research projects such as quality improvement projects, surveys, and clinical research studies are frameworks used to get feedback and data from patients during their time spent in health care systems. EBP is not the standard of care in many health care systems (Melnyk, et al., 2017). This due to many factors, including lack of EBP mentors, nursing programs that do not incorporate EBP into the curriculum,
Practicing the current evidence-based and research will help nurses to deliver care to their patients. And nurses should apply evidence-based nursing practice in their practices. For instance, during the simulation practice, nursing students elevated the patient’s bed in sim-flower position to increase the o2 saturation level of the patient. Thus, they followed the evidence-based practice to increase the o2 saturation level of the patients and patient benefits from the practice.

Each article found was systematically reviewed for the main population and interventions used in the article. The panel used existing systematic reviews as evidence. If the reviews were unavailable or out of date, the panel performed their own analyses. PICO questions were searched for by topic panels, that had the same bibliographic databases. “The quality of reviews was assessed using principles embodied in prior instruments addressing methodologic quality of systematic reviews, and wherever possible, current high-quality systematic reviews were used as the source of summary estimates. Reviews were also used to identify additional studies to complement the database
I currently work as an Assistant Medical Officer (AMO), trained in anaesthesia. My overall duty includes managing operation theatre (OT) procedure with the anaesthetic and surgeon. Also part my duty to observed patients in the recovery room and hand over the transaction process patients from recovery to the ward.
Evidence based practice is defined as the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care. (Melnyk, 2016) One of its main features is the reliance on the partnership among hard scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and individual patient needs and choices. EBP looks at research findings, quality improvement data and other forms of evaluation data, and expert opinion to identify methods of improvement. Evidence based practice challenges nurses to look at the “why” behind existing methods and processes in the search for improvement. EBP and research based practice have often been confused with one another. Research is generating new knowledge about a phenomenon or validation existing knowledge. “Although evidence-based practice may have opinion-expert opinion, but opinion still-woven in, research is built in such a way avoid bias.” (Melnyk, 2016) Evidence-based practice improves healthcare quality and patient outcomes while reducing costs.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the primary concept in nursing when it comes to determining clinical decisions on patient care, however, according to Hamrick, Hanson, Tracy, and O’Grady (2014), it is a technique that is often not utilized enough. The author’s further stated that providers lack the understanding of the process, which limits their ability to apply it in clinical settings.
The nursing research aims to provide more evidence-based practices based on the systematic inquiry about current issues in patient care. In recent years, nurses have invented many theories and models of nursing practice, and these are well-used by other researchers to formulate their hypothesis and present their findings.
Itroduction: Evidence-based practice is an approach to medicine that uses scientific evidence to determine the best practice (Beyea & Slattery, 2006). As nurses perform their daily tasks they must continually ask themselves, “What is the evidence for this intervention?”. Nurses are well positioned to question current nursing practices and use evidence to make care more effective. In order to improve patients’ outcomes it is the responsibility of the nurse to transition evidence-based practice into the norm, through application of daily practice (Flynn Makic, Rauen, Watson & Will Poteet, 2014). Continual evaluation of current practice must be performed to ensure the use of evidence-based practice opposed to practice based upon tradition. The implementation of evidence-based practice standardizes healthcare practices and diminishes groundless variations within care. These variations lead to the production of uncertain health outcomes (Stevens, 2013).
Parents, caregivers and educators have the challenge of giving a child with Autism the best caregiving and strategies that they need, which can be very stressful and tasking. So, this is where evidence based practices come in. Evidence based practices are practices brought about through quality and reliable research to be effective, which is so valuable in the field of Autism. This research can be experimental, replicated several times and published by credited peer reviewed journals. According to Simpson 2005, he provides us with categorization of practice for those diagnosed with ASD including: scientifically based practices (Applied Behavioral Analysis), promising practices, limited support practices and finally recommended practices. Common
The best nursing care is evidence based practice which is based on knowledge and experience (Richardson-Tench et al. 2014, p. 13). Both documents use evidence-based practice to support their procedures. Document two presented two case studies that provided examples of when clinical staff have been presented with an aggressive patient and they have de-escalated the situation through all the techniques offered in the guidelines (Sim, Wain & Khong 2011, p. 870). Document one contained a variety of other sources and policies to broaden and support the guidelines presented on how to manage aggression (NSW Ministry of health 2015, p. 11).
