There are two types of decisions that can be made in this world; one by the heart and one by the mind. The first wave eliminates electricity, the second wave creates tsunamis and the third wave spreads diseases through birds. The fourth wave commences the killing of the remaining humans by the hands of the Silencers and the fifth wave turns mankind against each one another. The villainous role of the Others in The Fifth Wave contributes to the development of Cassie’s character, the reveal of Evan’s character and the provision of suspense, Yancey suggests that every being has a similar nature, choosing emotions over logic. Cassie’s character develops from an ignorant, sheltered little girl into a strong and independent figure when the Others …show more content…
Contrary to belief, Evan is not heartless or cruel like the rest of the Others and instead displays human-like emotions. He is only cruel because he is ordered to kill over and over again, so much that he gets used to killing because “cruelty isn’t a personality trait./Cruelty is a habit” (138). Evan proves that not all Others are the same when he is about to kill Cassie. He is only cruel because he is ordered to kill over and over again, so much that he gets used to killing. He urges Cassie in his mind to “run, Cassie./Please run.” (142). This demonstrates that he feels remorse and does not actually want to kill Cassie, even though he was ordered to. By having second thoughts prior to killing Cassie, he shows a human characteristic of being weighed down by guilt and other emotions. Additionally, Evan breaks away from his kind’s nature and creates his own path to walk on. He knows that “to do what he was doing cruel implied he had a choice” (138) and “he was this human body, and it was him” (140). Evan discovers that the choice of killing humans turned out to be something he could change. Following his own free will, he decides to sever his lingering attachments to his kind and chooses to help humans over the Others. Evan is thought to be just like the Others, however, he is revealed to be like a human with …show more content…
She is to face the harsh reality that her last hope is dead and killed by the Others. Her burning hatred pushes her to resolve that she will fight for humanity and uses her hatred towards the Others as a driving factor to retaliate against the fake government forces. Meanwhile, Ben also discovers the true purpose of the training base at Wright Patterson. Ringer “lit up./As soon as [Ben] pulled out the tracker” (307). This is a moment of realization for the reader as now they know that the people they are killing are not Others, but other humans. The reader is kept engaged due to the fact that the group is still out on a mission and now they are unsure of what to do. Ben acts on impulse and is infuriated that he is being deceived by his enemies. He is lead by his emotions to go back for nugget even though it may cost his life which is again, another illogical decision based on Ben’s compassion. Incidentally, Cassie and Ben encounter each other at the grand battle that takes place at the enemy base. They are captured and brought to Vosch, who states “‘there really is no hope [..]/All your daydreams and childish fantasies about defeating us―useless.’” (437). Cassie and Ben have been caught and there seems to be no way to escape. Vosch casually crushes their plans, forcing them to lash out in anger. Cassie does not care about the outcome anymore and is simply acting on
After Chase dominates Ben in the scrimmage that Chase treated as a championship game, pointing at the crowd and smiling at his parents every time he made a shot, Ben starts to get down on himself. At this time, Ben was depressed and was always thinking about Chase and he feels like he is all he thinks about. After a long talk with his best friend Lily, he decides he needs to practice. So he starts weekly staying
Cassie is trying to fight back the extraterrestrial beings so that can leave the Earth once and for all. Humanity is trying to fight back what they got left of the world and save the human race that is at risk. Cassie enters the camp and she is ready to be in wonderland until she escapes and ends up finding Sammy and Ben and then the three of them escape, but then the run into Vosch ( the antagonist) . They end up defeating him and escaping the camp where they were first out. One major event is when Sammy is taken away from the =m y Squad 53 and put into the camp where they would keep him safe. Another major event is when Ben and Ringer find out that they are the fifth wave “Ben we’re the 5th wave” pg.309. Also when Cassie finds out that Evan Walker is a silencer ,but switched side to join the humans”So I do the things most reasonable people would do in my situation I run” pg.357.I did like the ending them escaping and Cassie saving her brother. I honestly believe that they will save the human race and the
Ben and Ellie take refuge in an abandoned apartment block. When Ben has second thoughts about realising the zoo animals into the wild, Ellie reassures him that it was necessary for a new beginning. As they both make plans to leave the city and head for the bush, Raja makes a final appearance. Ben is convinced that Raja is going to kill him, but instead he pats him affectionately on the
T.J. Avery was a rotten thirteen-year old who only wanted attention and would do almost anything to get it. He cheated her brother out of a coat and even made Mama lose her job. From the start of the book you can see that Cassie doesn’t like T.J., but as she grows and matures, you can see her start to care for him. T.J. showed up badly injured one night at the Logan house and Cassie risked her life to get him home and ensure that at least for that night that T.J. would be safe. He had been around two people that committed a crime and if he wasn’t kept safe, he would’ve been hung. T.J. was never really kind to Cassie, but the way she got him home shows that T.J. really was a part of Cassie’s life and that she wanted him to be, therefore making her gamble her life as well as her siblings’ lives to protect him. Cassie got him home safely and made sure to keep her siblings quiet and out of harm’s way so that even if T.J. was not guaranteed safe, she made sure that anyone she was liable for, she kept safe. Even after the incident, Cassie went home and just processed everything, and for her age, she reacted well. She knew how to get her information and how to proceed with it as to keep her composure and to not let it overwhelm
She was upset about what had happened there and was angry that she was treated so unfairly. At the moment, she was kicking at the sidewalk with her head bowed. It was then when she bumped into Lillian Jean Simms. “‘Well apologize’, she ordered. ‘… ‘Okay’ I said starting past, ‘I’m sorry.’, ‘That ain’t enough, get down on the road. … You can’t watch where you’re going , get in the road. Maybe that way you won’t be bumping into decent white folks with your nasty little self’ ” (Taylor 113-114) . Cassie was hot, and her stubbornness and pride did not help. Mr Simms told her that if his gal, Lillian Jean asks for Cassie to get down on the sidewalk, she had to. Out of anger and hate, Mr. Simms, like Lillian Jean, ordered Cassie to apologize immediately. Cassie refused and argued that she had already apologized. She did not want to get down on the road for a crime as small as bumping into a white person. Then, in the heat of the argument, as if on cue, Big Ma came. Cassie was relieved. She expected Big Ma to stand up for her and for them to have eachother’s backs in the fight. However, Big Ma did the opposite, she did the unthinkable. She made her apologize. “‘ Big Ma!’ I balked. ‘Say it child.’ … A painful tear slid down my cheek and my lips trembled, ‘ I'm sorry M-Miz Lillian Jean’ ’’( Taylor 115). Even if Cassie lost this battle, she still stood up for herself, and as fearless and brave. It is impossible to
Ben’s Purpose in the Drama (Consider how his appearances give meaning to the drama as a foil* to Willy.)
This quote shows that Cassie really cared about what happened to Papa and wanted to fight against who did it because she new it was wrong. When people are fighting against you sometimes you have to work to gather to stop it.
Before Cassie Bernall became a Christian, she was an outsider at school. Cassie had written letters to a friend about how she could kill her parents, Brad and Misty Bernall, and end all of her problems. Cassie's parents found the letters, made copies of them, and gave them to the police department. When Cassie got home from school, her parents confronted her. After the confrontation, the Bernall's broke all of Cassie's ties with her friends. The Bernall's enrolled Cassie in a Christian school. Cassie was not allowed to answer the phone and no longer had any privileges. She was allowed to go to a youth group, but that was all she could do. Her parents even went as far to put a monitor on their phone so they could know what she was doing when they weren't home. Cassie had lost all of the trust that she earned from her parents. Misty Bernall didn't go back to work so that she could watch over Cassie. Cassie had her backpack searched, her phone calls monitored, and her bedroom searched. Furtively investigating their daughter, they say,
The further ‘off the rails’ Cassie goes, the more extreme the sexual situations, at one point ‘courting’ a female and then a few minutes after the female leaves a male arrives. “Sexuality strongly influences people’s identity.” (Op. cit. p.22) And at this point in the series we find that Cassie has a very mixed up idea about who she is and what she wants.
Finally, Cassie had little-to-no human contact before she was shot in the leg and saved by Evan Walker but she still did not hesitate to kiss him, cuddle, fight, or anything that a normal couple would do. After fighting with each other, “Evan Walker kisses me. Holding my hand against his chest, his other hand sliding across my neck…” Despite Cassie being shot in the leg by an unknown shooter, aliens trying to take over the Earth, her brother being taken, and her family being dead, she is still a teenage girl who enjoys male interaction.
Courageous is a quality portrayed by these three incidents throughout the story. One, the Barnett store in Strawberry, two when cassie beat up Lillian Jean, and three, when Cassie led her younger siblings by herself to reach their home. These three incidents show that courageous is a trait that well describes Cassie. This first incident that shows Cassie’s courage takes
Gradually, Ben overall becomes sensitive to the environment. The sadness has overwhelmed him and left him a primitive form. He becomes impaired in the way that he relies on a caretaker and is unable to recapture the memories of himself after he’s gone. Once Ben becomes missing, people don’t search for him but instead call to ask where he has been. After about a week everyone in his life ceases to call or look. Annie is the only one to evoke the memories of Ben, the disabled man who became primitive
I think that Cassie’s innocence went away over the course of this chapter because of the reasons above. So in result of this I think that Cassie has learned a lot about the world she is living
Cassie befriended Lillian, learned all of her secrets, and beat her up to make her apologize. Cassie was getting tired, so she threw Lillian’s books on the ground. Cassie took Lillian to the woods after being nice to her, doing things for her, and fought her, pulling her hair until she said she wouldn’t tell her father about it. In order for Cassie to win, Cassie said, “Make me.” This may have seemed like a not so good idea, but if this plan had backfired, Cassie knew that in the end, the results could’ve been deadly for her and her
Figurative language is used to emphasize Cassie and her emotions in her experiences and interactions and how she learns from that. Epiphany is used to convey how both Cassie and Stacey learned from their mistakes and simultaneously grew from said mistakes. Many other characters in this book go through an experience they could learn from, but don’t learn from it (e.g. T.J.). But, Stacey and Cassie, thanks to their parents they learn from their mistakes and experiences and get a life lesson along with it. Taylor's book displays a variety of themes but the most prominent theme is that making mistakes is part of life, and is okay, but it is important that you learn from those mistakes and grow from
