The type of classroom environment that a teacher creates and encourages affects a student's ability to learn and feel comfortable as a member of the class. Such an atmosphere is one in which all students feel enthusiastic, comfortable, included, valued, and respected. Implementing a few strategies can help teachers to develop a strong sense of community in their students and encourage positive interaction. For this, they need to broadly focus on two areas: Classroom decor For primary classes, using warm and attractive colours can help promote a sense of comfort to the students. These colours can be used for walls and furniture. Teachers should put up students' activities on classroom walls to create a sense of belonging. Grouping the desks
It is important to foster a learning environment in which students feel safe, relaxed, secure, confident and valued (Gravells A 2012 pg25) especially for learners who may have had negative experiences in traditional classroom environments. Students often describe supportive learning environments as expanding their sense of family and enhancing their self-esteem, which, when combined with increased literacy skills, help students take more chances in pursuing their goals.
I want to build a sense of community were discipline problems can be prevented, children can feel safe, secure, nurtured and supported by the environment through thoughtful arrangements. The large amount of space in my classroom will be devoted to the arrangement of individual student desks the U-shaped desk pattern in my classroom will allow me to make eye contact with every student and reach each student with ease and this is also good for frequent whole-group discussions. I will provide open passageways through the aisles so the children can move around the room, this is essential for children in wheelchairs to have mobility. My classroom will have brightly colored posters, rugs and furniture such colors as yellow, orange, red and green will be on the classroom walls. I will have a bulletin board in the entrance for posting lesson plans, information about special classroom activities,
1. In Linda Christensen’s story, she describes how it was a very difficult task for her to “build a sense of community” in her fourth grade classroom. She states that students were not being cooperative in most of the activities she had planned out for them. She had knowledge that some students already had issues with one another, making it even more difficult for her, as the educator, to accommodate these lessons. (Burant, 2010, pg. 69).
A.) Explain why it is important to promote appropriate behaviour and respect for others (ref. 2.2) It is important to promote appropriate behaviuor and respect for others in the class to create a safe and comfortable learning environment in which learners feel at ease to express their opinion, participate in classroom discussions and activities and ask questions allowing learners to complete their work to the best of their ability and ultimately achieve their goals. Each learner may have different religious or cultural backgrounds and even different learning needs. Therefore it is important to create a learning atmosphere that promotes the appropriate behavior and respect for others. A good way of achieving this positive learning environment
Many adults have a hard time entering a room full of people they do not know very well, and this is something that most students have to deal with on an everyday basis the first week of school. It can be an awkward, uncomfortable experience, especially at the middle level. This awkwardness can be stinted by the teacher intervening to create a positive, loving classroom environment. Making students feel like they belong is an important step to becoming a strong educator. Nina Sears, in the article “Building Relationships with Students”, she mentions the mentions the idea that, “When teachers take advantage of opportunities to speak with their students about life outside school, it's an indication to students that their teacher actually cares about them as a person.” Treating students like induvial makes them feel cared for and that they have someone on their side.
In this paper, I will examine Disposition Four, “the educator uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.” This paper is an effort to contest the many relentless influences affecting learners today. Its focus is the necessity of a partnership of resources for students to succeed. (Schulte, 2009) stated, “Increasing academic performance, enhancing social and emotional skills and even retaining quality teachers are all related to positive school climate” (p.46) .Thus the critically importantance for educator to be skilled at creating meaningful interactions between students and practitioners as well as practitioners with students.
For students to thrive in the classroom, I must ensure that they have a positive space they can come to and feel comfortable. If students don’t feel safe in their classroom then learning will not happen. I must build a caring and supportive space for children so they can succeed and feel loved. This will help develop a sense of belonging to a school. I have to remember that it is not my classroom, it is the students! It is imperative that the students, parents, and coworkers in my school feel they can come to me for anything, especially as one of their
During my field experience at Ridge Elementary school, I was placed in a 4th-grade classroom. While working on my field experience I had gotten the luxury to connect and bond with several types of student’s from various backgrounds and demographics. When I first stepped foot into the fourth-grade classroom it was very well decorated with quotes, educational tips, and motivational messages. There were three windows in which the students often gazed out while working. The walls were an eggshell color which was kind of depressing. Adding color to the walls would have made the environment feel a little more joyful yet the students still made that classroom their second home by decorating their desks.
My classroom will create an environment that is emotionally supportive through mutual respect. Students will be taught in the beginning of the class coursework a brief on the basic human needs so as to get to get to appreciate the different needs of others and the importance of treating each other with respect and dignity. Because a classroom should function as a community, I will provide growth opportunities for my students and ensure that through activities like get to know your classmate we get to learn more about each student. Students will be taught to embrace diversity and as such treat each others’ opinions with respect even though they are allowed to intelligently and respectfully disagree with such opinions. Through class integration and cooperation, conflicts will be solved using the set procedures and through appointed leaders and the
Within the classroom it is important to set a rapport with the students by acting professionally and regulating our emotions in a way that will facilitate a positive classroom atmosphere. By setting classroom limits firmly, with respect and consistency, it allows us to accept the inevitable ambiguity and uncertainty that arises from allowing students to figure out the problem on their own. Through empathy and sensitivity towards the students, it will serve to strengthen teacher-student relationships, as well as the classroom climate and management (Pianta, La Paro, Payne, Cox, & Bradley, 2002 as cited in Jennings & Greenberg, 2009).
One of the most effective ways to encourage belongingness in the classroom is asking the students at the beginning of the year their opinion on how they feel the classroom should flow. One reason why I believe this is an effective way to promoting belongingness in the classroom is because it gives the students a voice. For example last semester I had professor ask on the first day of class how we would like lectures to be ran. He gave us the choice of taking notes the whole class period, some notes with small group discussions, or large groups discussions. Not only did we feel as if we had a voice and a say so in things it also was a good way to start a positive relationship with him a professors. Positive relationships really can make a classroom run smoothly with both the peers and the teachers. One way to promote positive relationships amongst peer in the classroom is allowing students to work together on assignments. Students are getting to know each other more and students can learn to value one another’s opinion.
The first step in classroom management is to create an environment where students feel cared for and valued. To do accomplish this, teachers need to build positive student-teacher relationships. Marazano (2003) reports in his book, Classroom Management That Works, which is cited in the Jones and Jones (2013) book, that “Positive teacher-student relationships were the foundation of effective classroom management” (p.56). I am committed to creating a safe learning environment that is organized, structured and conducive to student learning. While influencing a classroom of community learners, I strive to also build positive teacher-student relationship with all of my
A teacher’s assumptions can be made through experiences with schooling, their childhood, their own abilities and challenges, the amount of experiences with diversity and different cultures. Through experiences teachers can be motivated, hindered, misinformed, and create bias that affect the dynamics of classroom life. A teacher may have certain views on the roles and responsibilities of teachers that affect the climate for learning and classroom community. Furthermore, depending on how comfortable a teacher may feel with the surrounding of the school and social context may hinder or enhance their participation in the community and advocacy. It is crucial for teachers to reflect on their previous experiences, bias, and assumptions and examine if they are affecting the dynamics of your classroom. Furthermore, teachers should look for professional resources and social experiences to better understand the needs and environment of their students. This may help eliminate any bias and create an understanding to implement a warm accepting environment.
When I think about my role as a teacher, one of the most important things I consider is the relationships I build with my students, parents, colleagues, and community members. In the classroom, I need to ensure that I create a safe, loving, and positive learning environment. In order to make all students feel welcome, I get to know their names, the correct pronunciation and spellings, learning their culture and background, and their
Answer: I believe that the classroom is a community and that everyone from the principal, to the students, and lastly the parents should at least contribute to maintain a positive atmosphere. I like how my students learn from other students in our classroom I have seen many students on their lunches and the coloration of teamwork to get homework done is mind blowing.
