European Imperialism In Asia In The Late 20th Century

Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Imperialism was at an all-time high during European expansion movement through Asia, India, and Africa. If I was to be from Asia, in this time era, I would seek out many other options to avoid imperialism. I would picture the situation in a way that allowed me to talk to Europe’s head power of expansion. I believe that Asia could co-opt European ideas, but still keep their way of life economically and politically.
Economically, Europe co-opting ideas with Asia would boost both economies especially Europe’s. Therefore, instead off trying to take over the Asian trade market, the nations should have joined forces and worked with each other’s idea. Europeans maintained extraterritoriality inside many of Chinese port cities. Extraterritoriality meant that foreigners were exempt from Chinese law enforcement and on Chinese land; they could only be judged and tried by officials of their own nation. This kept them in power because people of their nations would let them get away with anything with no repercussions. The result of lawlessness of the Europeans combined with European economic, political, and military domination of the Chinese wreaked havoc on the Chinese. In 1900, the Boxer Rebellion saw that sentiment explode into social unrest and war. With encouragement from the Chinese empress, the Boxers killed multiple Europeans and seized the large foreign legation in cities such as Beijing. If Europe would have just learned to work with China this could all have been avoided. China could have controlled their major port cities, while Europe just makes demands on what they would like to have done.
