What exactly is imperialism? Imperialism is the seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country (Beck et al. 339), with New Imperialism being a time of colonial expansion by Japan, the United States, and European countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (New Imperialism). While there were many reasons Europeans imperialized, one of the biggest was the advancements that spurred from the Industrial Revolution, a transition to machine-made goods that began in England in the middle 1700s (Beck et al. 283). This allowed conquering another country to be very successful. Several of those countries included those in Asia. European imperialism affected Asia in various ways, both positive and negative. While it somewhat improved the lives of the people in Asia, it was also extremely detrimental to them with the poverty, racism, and cultural ignorance they had to face. With Europeans believing they had to “civilize” Asians, that meant they also believed Asian lifestyle should be like theirs as well. Europeans saw their culture as superior, and ended up “[forcing] the people to accept modern or Western ways” (The Age of Imperialism). European customs Asians did not understand were thrust upon them, threatening traditional Asian life and leaving them struggling their cultural identity. This included religion. During 1857 in India, Indian soldiers, or sepoys, were given rifles with cartridges greased with beef and pork fat from the British. In order to use the cartridges, “soldiers had to bite off the ends. Both Hindus, who consider the cow sacred, and Muslims, who do not eat pork, were outraged by the news” (Beck et al. 359). Because of this cultural ignorance, the soldiers were outraged and rebelled, leading to an outbreak called the Sepoy Mutiny in which many sepoys and British soldiers were
