The article titled "Optional Ethnicities: For Whites Only?" written by Marcy C. Waters was a fascinating read. Being a student who studies sociology, I try always try to analyze the differences between categories of people like race, but I have never thought about symbolic ethnicity. Also, I never thought about the idea of being able to turn off and on your cultural backgrounds. In all, Waters brought new ideas to the table. I assume since I am White, I have never had to give it much thought. So, when people do ask me about my heritage, I tell them that I am German, Irish and American Indian. Concept number one that defines the objective of the article is ethnic minority groups. As this group is defined as primarily due to cultural differences. As cultural difference between Mexico and Texans hope to convert the new theory of the republic was slavery permission. As stated, Mexico has abolished slavery in 1829, thus the Texans slaveholder were problematic to this department as demand for cotton was high, it needed cheap and affordable labor. However, as specified Mexican ruled “put down the rebellion had explicit orders to free any slaves that they encountered”. Nevertheless, Texas has succeeded in breaking away from Mexico ideas of not having slaves; therefore, as an independent republic, Texas were to establish the institution of slavery flourish. Unlike the Spanish Empire, America characterizes individuals commonly as black or white when that is not the case. An accurate description is required to distinguish the various ranges of racial mixtures. Since America only generalizes between the Europeans and the Africans, the blending of the minority are disregarded.

Inequality towards minorities in the United States has been established to be forgotten but in this century we have noticed that it has never gone away but instead been covered with other structures that allow inequality to take place. Being a minority and watching this video reminded me of the inequalities that I will still have to face throughout my education and career path. For many of us we have been tracked since elementary and allowed structures figure out where we belong due to our race, economic status, immigration status. For some students, we realize the inequalities that we have been given and try to make a change that will affect us and future generations. Housing segregation is as the taken for granted to any feature of urban life in the United States (Squires, Friedman, & Siadat, 2001). It is the application of denying minority groups, especially African Americans, equal access to housing through misinterpretation, which denies people of color finance services and opportunities to afford decent housing. Caucasians usually live in areas that are mostly white communities. However, African Americans are most likely lives in areas that are racially combines with African Americans and Hispanics. Although the government was mostly white, they did a lot to protect minorities, like black people, against the majority, like white people. They created laws and reversed laws. The help of the government allowed the United States to be the integrated country it is today.

Historically, America has been a nation that participates in discriminatory practices based on perceived race. European Americans have always considered themselves as a privilege group, therefore excluded from the discriminatory practice against other minorities. Mexicans, Filipinos, Blacks (African Americans) and Native Americans, were excluded from first class citizenship, and were and still are in some cases America’s victims of separatism. Americans of European descent fought to keep their status quo though eugenics, racial discrimination and unfair laws and practices. Therefore, many obstacles were put in place to disenfranchised minorities through strategically bigoted activities and politically orchestrated legislation. Some of these things included inequality in economics, living conditions, immigration repression, and demeaning treatment supported by white European Americans. All of these practices simply because of external features, or known background regardless of personal appearance.

Since the beginning of time, man has always found ways and means to distinguish himself a step above his neighbor. In the sciences, this innate behavior of humanity is described as a natural phenomenon, which is to be expected when members within a community are in competition for similar resources and opportunities. However, since the dawn of civilization, man has risen above this ‘dog-eat-dog’ mentality to consciously fashion more sophisticated avenues/models to place himself above his fellow man, based on elaborate philosophies, culture, religion and physiological differences (with the most obvious being complexion ), to mention but a few.

Race also known as ethnicities is a big topic, not just in the United States, but all over the World with all kinds of humans being that was once created by Adam and Eve. There is multiple race living in the United States that are known as Asian, African American, Hispanics, and others. My personal opinion on Asians are known with small eyes, straight hair, and ninety percent of the population are skinny. Another African Americans are known as tall, fit, and with different style hair, but mostly with puffy hair. Hispanics which is my race is a mix of everything because some of the population are either short or tall. From the birth of the United States, immigrants have always caused an environment something more representative of a big melting pot. In terms of cooking a melting pot is used for melting metals or other substances are melted or fused together (Dictionary.com).On the other hand in a nation, a melting pot is a place where a variety of races, cultures, or individuals assimilate into a cohesive whole (Dictionary.com). Ethnic and racism discrimination in the United States of America has been a major problem since the thirteen colonies created and the slave era. The leaders of the colonies wanted to build a country that represent all the people who are living in it without giving control to big powers that can decrease the representation of the people. They placed laws in making the American constitution that protect all the people of America. However, these amendments were mostly protecting the White Americans which not approved to Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, and African Americans. Laws and amendments kept being added to the constitution so that the rights of every person who lives in the United States remains protected, and one of the most important amendments of the constitution is the fourteenth amendment, which freed the slaves and gave human equality and rights for all races in the US. Thus, African American still suffer the most today when a young white male shoot and killed nine African Americans in church in Charleston South Carolina (Schaller). My research paper will consist of subjects whom they are related to race discrimination and what happened lately in Charleston church and who was behind this massacre and what was his motive to do such thing. For my research paper I will argue about the South Carolina’s racist history and how the history influences some young males and turn them into racisms (Schaller). Throughout history, many laws have been created to keep America as white as possible. Many white people, such as Tim and Mary Anne Walsh, Marianne Bardolino, and Beverly Sowell, believe that America has been taken over by non-white immigrants; and as a result, makes them wonder if this really is a “white country.” Many generations of Americans have been perceived as immigrants, but overcame racism, and are now recognized as “white,” but the new non-white immigrants are treated with the same disdain and disrespect that their fellow white immigrants received throughout history.

The United States is considered a melting pot because of the vast array of different cultures, ethnicities, and religious groups who all live within its borders. Other countries with fewer cultural differences have been torn apart by the conflicts that arise between these differing groups. It is believed by some that the United States has been able to avoid such ethical conflicts as have brought down other nations but looking at American history it is evident that this is not true. America's history is one of ethnic conflict because of religion, nationalistic, and particularly ethnic differences. The two centuries that the United States has existed has been a history of racial marginalization particularly against African Americans which culminated with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In the present, the United States likes to claim that as a nation, we are color blind but evidence exists to the contrary. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) still exists, hate crimes are committed based on ethnicity, and stereotypes are perpetuated in order to minimize and ostracize. Despite these instances, the country has held strong largely because although these instances occur, they are not approved of by the government or those involved in criminal justice.
