In this town the education system is broken down in the same way children attending public schools have three choices there's a school on the South Side the west side and the north side what's this soon as I finish with Elementary there's one public middle school and one high school for famous person to attend private school there is one located there are located on the east side of town majority of the students attended private school or white private schools in Crowley are really expensive and most families cannot afford them. Familiar to private schools is always dominate the public school system that education appear to be better and the athletic department was excellent. Tajfel (1981) described ethnic identity as part of an individual’s self-concept developed from knowledge of membership in a cultural group and the value or emotional significance attached to that membership. Ethnic identity content has been defined as “the actual ethnic behaviors that individuals practice, along with their attitudes toward their ethnic group” (Phinney, 1993, p. 64). Charlesworth (2000) maintained ethnic identity development to be an essential human need that provided a sense of belonging and historical continuity and created a foundation on which to build a concept of self.
Using the above definition the ethnic identity the author would have been at the search stage. The author was aware of the different ethnic issues but how however she was still actively researching about her ethnic identity. The critical incident that occurred was the very time the author was ever called a nigger and could fully understand the meaning of the word. Juana decides to leave her small town in search of finding her father in America. Juana has had to overcome a lot of lost and disappointment in such a short lifespan. Juana lost 3 siblings, one being her sister who dies under her care, she is behind in school and often bullied and her father decides to leave his daughter and wife to find employment in America. Juana’s father leave does not send any money back and now his family is behind in their rent. Juana is unable to really contribute to the home and her mother most bare burden of responsibility. Juana’s mother begin sleeping with Don Elias the tax collector in order to be able to pay bills and purchase food. Juan’s mother becomes pregnant by Don Elias but when she has the baby he gives the child to his wife. Juana’s mother becomes depressed due to not hearing from her husband, losing 3 children to death and now she has lost her only boy to Don Elias and his wife. Juana’s mother finds comfort in alcohol and she becomes the town alcoholic. Juana is constantly being bullied in school due to being twelve years old in the fourth grade. Juana was behind in school because of poverty and not having the money for books.
