Classical and Contemporary Ethical Philosophies Ethical philosophies served as guide for people in the workplace to make moral decisions in conducting business. There are classical normative ethical philosophies as well as contemporary ethical philosophies being used. They have been applied in the different levels or dimensions of the business organizations. People do know that there are business organizations that have disregarded ethical standards and encounters ethical issues inside their company. There are times that ethical standards or norms have to be set aside to achieve something worthwhile for the company. Business adapt ethical theories that can satisfy their needs or in the context of the situation. Some theories do strictly adhere to the laws of morality and that a business should stop their operations once they are found to violate rules of conduct.
Dimensions of Business Relationship Business organizations are composed of different and complex relationships of people involve in the entire process. Business ethics do covers wide areas of concerns like corporate compliance, social responsibility, reputation management, fair labor practices, accurate accounting and audits and even environmental stewardship. It has something to do on how the company handles and deals with all the stakeholders involve like the clients, employees, shareholders, suppliers and the community (Business Ethics Primer, 2005). There are many responsibilities and people involve. Businesses differ from one another in how they value the dimensions of business relationship. Analytical and problem solving skills are important to resolve ethical dilemmas involve in the business.
Employer to Employee Common ethical issues that arise between employers and the employees include issue on wages and company benefits, gender issues, disparagement, cultural diversity, layoff decisions, fair labor practices, work standards and conditions and other more. The author Robert Solomon argues that ethics has to an integral part with regard to business management. He does not believe that business management must include unethical or illegal methods to be able to succeed. Solomon preaches that business management is not as simple as obtaining revenue. “Businesses need to abide by fair policies and their owners have to be ethical in dealing with their customers” (Shaw p. 37). The author acknowledges that while illegal practices in business management could bring positive results at first, eventually the business is bound to fail. This is why Solomon recommended eight important policies that can help businesses in integrating ethics into their operations.
Ethics has been around for a long time. Merriam-Webster defines ethics as rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad. It is an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior. Ethics has much to do with feelings and beliefs. If you feel deep down in your heart that something is not right, then it you should not do it. The Bible says, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin” (James 4:17 English Standard Version). Ethical business procedures include guaranteeing that the main legality is in place. Also, the company observes moral standards in its relationships with the people in its business community, which includes the most important people in their business, who are the customers. Ethics, in business, refers to moral principles and standards that define acceptable behavior in the world of business. Ethical decisions foster trust among individuals and in business relationships. Recognizing ethical issues is important in the workplace. An ethical issue is an identifiable problem requiring a person or organization to choose from among several actions that may be evaluated as ethical or unethical. When you’re determining is a situation is ethical or not, there are three factors to take into consideration. Individual factors, organizational factors, and opportunity. Individual factors are sets of principles that describe what a person believes are the right way to behave. Organizational factors include the influence of managers, coworkers, and the work group. Business ethics is a form of applied ethics it deals with ethical rules and principles within a business or commercial context, the various moral or ethical problems that can arise in a business setting, and any special ethical duties or obligations that apply to people who are engaged in commerce, including workers and managers, customers and suppliers, and the larger group of people who have some interest in the business.
Autocrats lead many countries in today’s world, creating atrocious environments for their citizens who follow them out of necessity. Wars start against and between these totalitarian rulers in a battle for power; for example, World War II stemmed from a power struggle between the Axis powers lead by Hitler and the Allied powers. These actions of war are manifested in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, which narrates the story of a group of boys stranded alone on an island who must find a way to rule themselves and divide power. Golding writes Lord of the Flies as a historical allegory to World War II to illustrate the ascent of a tyrant through sinister means and the dehumanization of others; additionally, the novel exhibits the antagonism between hesitant, virtuous leaders and violent dictators that creates growing actions of war. The events in the book parallel those in World War II in order to reveal how individuals are pressured to act when forced to engage with destructive despots such as Jack in Lord of the Flies and Hitler in World War II.
This will be an over view of ethics as it relates to business in our society. Concepts from Philosophy will seek to describe the correlation between actions that are classified as morally right or ethical in our dealings with each other as human beings. Clear and concise examples will be given as well as ways in which to improve upon business ethics.
Business ethics refers to the consideration of moral decisions and responsibilities in the process of operating a business. Business ethics, practiced throughout the deepest layers of a company, become the heart and soul of the company 's culture and can mean the difference between success and failure.
