1. Ethics is a topic that sparks a lot of debate amongst different groups of people; it is hard to keep everyone in an organization happy. Research one ethical issue that is prevalent in the workplace and decide, as a leader, how you would handle it. Use Exercise 7-3 “Organizational Ethics” to aid you in your answer.
Student Answer: One major ethical issue we have dealt with in my workplace in harassing behavior from one employee and another. As a leader of the organization I would and did handle the situation by first and foremost having a zero tolerance policy in place that type of behavior. We were able to reference the policy to take action towards that employee which ultimately led to their termination. I do however think that preventative measures could have taken place to further prevent this unethical behavior and that would be to instill the values of the organization and its leaders to the community of staff who choose to be a part of the organization. When you’re determining is a situation is ethical or not, there are three factors to take into consideration. Individual factors, organizational factors, and opportunity. There have been some scientific studies and/or surveys suggest that workplace bullying is a well known epidemic problem in the American Workforce. Studies suggested that from 2007 and 2008 that more than 1,000 adults confirmed that 45 % reported that they have indeed worked for an abusive boss or co-worker. Also, in September of 2007 a poll suggested that 37% American Workers or 54 million employees reported that they have been bullied at work. Bullying affects nearly half or 49 % of full and part time employees in America or an estimated 71.5% million workers. With this in mind, there was a study conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management or (SHRM) and the Ethics Resource Center that a 3rd of HR professionals or 32% have reported observing some form of misconduct regarding workplace bullying. Ethical leadership is leadership that is involved in leading in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of others. As leaders are by nature in a position of social power, ethical leadership focuses on how leaders use their social power in the decisions they make, actions they engage in and ways they influence others.
