Ethical Teachings and How They Guide Adherents in Their Daily Lives

The beatitudes are a set of instructions Jesus gave us for how to live a happy life with the right intentions. If we follow these instructions, we will be rewarded in heaven. In the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, the character Stargirl provides an example of how to live out these instructions. In particular, Stargirl shows us how to live out the following beatitudes: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.” , “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.”, and “Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs in the kingdom of heaven.”

Ethics is a branch if philosophy that deal with ideas about what is morally good and bad. Ethics act as tools, giving us guidance when we need to make important decisions in personal and professional situations. There are biblical inferences that can relate to most if not all situations that we come across in our daily lives. God will not put us in any situations that we cannot be triumphant in. If the Bible is an absolute in all of these theories, so is Jesus Christ.

Ethics are statements written that mirrors the principles of society it reflects society’s views of what is right or humanitarian. However, morals are not written and are codes setting out what is thought to be good enough or offensive behaviour.

The Ten Commandments were what all other laws were based off of and were to be taken with much seriousness. Disobeying the Ten Commandments was punishable by death not matter who they were. Within living in a Christian faith, it is mandatory for all Christians to follow and respect the acts that Jesus taught us. The Beatitudes are the eight statements of blessedness spoken by Jesus at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12), each beginning with "Blessed are.”

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduced the eight beatitudes to teach his followers how to live an ideal Christian life. He taught those who listened about the 8 important blessings to guide us to soon be living an everlasting life with God in His kingdom above. Some of the Beatitudes influence us to feel compassion towards those who have wronged us, to be able to act out of the goodness of our hearts, and to bring peace and harmony to friends and enemies in times of disagreement. These Beatitudes are significant to us as Christians, for they shall enlighten us with Jesus’ teachings for a virtuous and moral life here on earth and above.

In Exodus 31:18 it says that God wrote them on tablets of stone with his finger. When Moses took the tablets to the people he found they were breaking the commandments by worshiping an idol. He threw the tablets down and broke them. According to Exodus Moses had to go back to the mountain to make new tablets so God could write them again. Exodus tells how God gave Moses the Ten Commandments; Deuteronomy repeats the commandments and tell fathers to teach them to their children. The Ten Commandments provided how people are to live with God and each other. There are more than Ten Commandments, however these are deemed to be most important. Christian adherents focus deeply on the core ethical teachings as they are the laws they must abide by to reach the Kingdom of Heaven. Each of the ten commandments as well as the beatitudes, and the Commandment of Love serve as the core ethical teachings of Christianity. The Ten Commandments were received by Moses at Mount Sinai and were followed by the Israelites to ensure their safety. Within modern day society adherents see the Commandments as a set of rules to abide by and a guide to living an ethical life. The fourth commandment “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day” for Catholics is followed by attending church on Sunday. Keeping to this law or ‘rule’ allows for adherents to stay in the image of God. When one first looks at the beatitudes, one might think that they are a set of blessings that apply only to a certain group of people and that they have no influence on the ‘common folk’ who struggle to barely fulfill the 10 commandments. But if one reduces it to that, they miss out on the true purpose of the beatitudes and lose its hidden value.
