As to philosophy, there are many pieces of art that proved to be controversial. In 1995, artist, Marcus Harvey painted Myra, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1997. Marcus Harvey is an English artist and painter, and was one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Much of Harvey’s work was displayed globally. A few well-known paintings were “Snaps”, “The Fuhrer’s Cakes”, and “Crucible”. Nonetheless, the art piece Myra was the most controversial painting in his career.
Myra resembled a magnified black and white photograph that was made with the utilization of casts of an infant’s hand. Myra Hindley was an English serial killer, responsible for the Moors murders. She carried out five assaults while accompanied with Ian Brady. Due to the fact that Myra was a criminal, it turned a cathartic painting with bunch of outcry from society.
There were numerous of ethical issues that caused an outrage amid this time. For instance, It was an insult to the public, a sensitive subject. At the point when the work was displayed, it distressed the victims families and they requested the portrait to be excluded from the exhibition,

Harvey remarks, ” I know enough to know that she probably didn't do any of the murders, that she was just in a relationship where she was probably too attached to the man who was doing it to extricate herself. That her life was probably too dull and boring to throw the relationship away ... I don't believe that's 30 years' worth of reputation as one of the most vile and notorious murderers in British criminal history”, which justifies Harvey’s position regarding the issue. Harvey endeavors to criticize how the legal system is flawed and to show that innocent people are accused
A ‘crucible’ is an object in which substances are combined and then subjected to high temperatures. Arthur Miller uses this theme to guide “The Crucible” from the exposition, when Puritan girls danced in the woods, to Proctor’s death by the hangman’s noose. Hale and Danforth are closely intertwined in their beliefs and views at the beginning of the play, but, as tensions and temperatures rise, they begin to separate; ultimately ending with contrary beliefs. In the opening scenes, Hale and Danforth are present in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 to cast out demons and witches. When the final curtain falls at the end of Act Four, Hale recognizes that the Salem Witch Trials were a result of repressed emotions and conflicts, and the desire to express them under the pretext of witchcraft. Danforth cannot and will not recognize this fact. Thus, Miller develops the characters of Hale and Danforth into foils for each other by the end of the novel; the growing tension is made evident through dialogue, character development, and through the theme of pride.
Proctor. For the first and only time in the play we see Abigail as her
The woman portrayed in the painting is the famous movie star Marilyn Monroe. The photograph that Warhol used for this piece is a publicity still from the 1953 movie Niagra.(Museum of Modern Art) Marilyn Monroe has always been known, and always will be known as our nations most famous sex symbol. Her personal life was even more interesting and exciting to the public than her films. She was married several times, and the mysterious events surrounding her death were rumored to be the result of an affair with President John F. Kennedy. Warhol chose the year of Monroe's death, declared a suicide, to create this piece. Her troubled personal life and untimely death only made Warhol's painting more powerful. He displays Monroe at her best. She is young and beautiful with styled hair and a made up face-yet inside she was empty. By glorifying her, Warhol shows her vulnerability. She was an icon to millions, yet the constant demands from fans and the media drove her into the downward spiral which ultimately ended her life.
The Crucible is a complex and intriguing novel with events, characters and themes comparable to almost every period of human history. It is common for humans to fear change and what is unknown, in the play The Crucible this is witchcraft and the devil, in more recent times it can be seen in post World War Two and Cold War United States, through McCarthyism. The themes in the crucible are as important to people in the 21st century as in Salem in 1692. These include justice, reputation, hysteria, intolerance and empowerment. All of these are common themes throughout human history. The characters in The Crucible are also important to people of the 21st century as they can teach us a little bit about people around us and their reactions when
The piece of art that I decided to talk about on this discussion is a painting by an artist that goes by the name Brionya James; she is a Texas born and raised artists and creates various paintings. Her painting that I selected is a painting the depicts all the things that took place when Harvey occurred; her painting is title “Still We Rise: Heroes of Harvey”. I feel like this painting was important to society, the Houston area especially because it shows how even though you are going through hardships, you can still rise from it. It shows how people from different backgrounds, cultures, social classes came together. I thought the painting showcase the pain, the hurt and coming together for the greater good. She included an insert to explain
What is a moral dilemma? A moral dilemma is a man versus self conflict. It is when a character has to perform two different actions, but they can not perform both actions because it is not possible. Authors use moral dilemmas in their writings to retain the reader’s interest in the book or play and to have the reader ask questions. People often face many life altering choices such as right versus wrong or good versus bad. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor chooses to die because he does not want to blacken his name throughout Salem and to ruin his sons’ names when they grow up.

Art is meant to make someone feel something. Artists can convey emotions through their art. However, what happens when the emotion that is conveyed in anger, sadness, or grief. This creates controversy in art. I believe that the painting Myra, by Marcus Harvey creates a feeling of anger and sadness within its viewers that creates controversy. This controversy comes from the events behind this painting but also the way the artist, Marcus Harvey, painted it.
In 1692, in Salem Massachusetts a small group of girls joined together to go in the woods at night to meet a slave woman name Tituba. Tituba is a slave of Reverend Parris. During their meeting all the girls are dancing
Murderer is merely brutal. It’s like a hammer, or a lump of metal. I would rather be a murderess than a murderer, if those are the only options” (pg.23) During the time of the Victorian period, the female criminals were given much more sympathy and leeway compared to the male criminals. In reference to the novel, McDermott was instantly said guilty and was hanged for his wrong doings while Grace, being convicted of the same crime as McDermott, was only put in prison for insanity.
The painting was too controversial because it epitomizes the infringement upon the freedom of expression. According to the man at the crossroad (2010), "The painting was controversial because it included an image of Lenin and a soviet May Day parade (paragraph 1)." This shows that Rivera mural had controversial events and people, in his mural called Man at the Crossroad. "I understand where you're coming from, but Nelson approved Rivera's design of "The Man at the Crossroad." According to Art and Design (2011), "Instead, the sketch included two machine televisions (paragraph 3)." Nelson did approve the sketch but he didn't know what was the true meaning of the painting and how controversial it
The crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, a story about adultery, false accusations, and forgiving. The story is a real life based event that happened in the 1600’s when people were falsely being accused of being “Witches”. Along with the false accusations, it led to punishments such as death. In The Crucible, John Proctor’s reputation around the town is known as an Adulterer, he was also victim of false accusations brought against him, and he was forgiving of his sins.]
The media today, is highly selective in their constructions of offences, offenders and victims. Media representations of crime are moulded and women are portrayed in a way that is entertainment driven and is appealing to the audience. Despite the fact that women seldom stalk, murder outsiders or commit sequential murders- in fact they are rarely vehement, “accounting for only ten percent of convicted violent offenders- those who do so are highly newsworthy because of their novelty” (Jewkes 2011, p. 123) Present day media admits that because fierce women are comparatively uncommon, they are all the more appealing and diabolical to the audience as a result. The essay shall discuss the reason and presentation in the media of female offenders, female victims and women specific crimes.
For the purpose of this essay I will be considering Nils Christie’s (1986) concept of the ‘ideal victim’. In considering this concept, I will discuss what is meant by an ‘ideal victim’ and will also be focusing on the high profile Australian criminal case of Anita Cobby in Blacktown on 2nd of February 1986. Anita Cobby was only 26 years old when she was abducted, brutally raped and murdered by four ‘ideal offenders’. This essay will also consider, the ways in which the media and criminal justice system have constructed Anita Cobby as an ‘ideal victim’.
“The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself” (Addams). Immorality is a very subjective concept, but sometimes it is undeniable. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Abigail Williams is shown to be the most immoral character through her constant disregard of others throughout the different events of the story, furthering the point that when in fearful situations people will only think about themselves.
