Emile Zola once said “The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work.” The first point to this quote is the artist is the athlete; the gift is their physical ability. The second point is that the athletes are nothing without their physical ability or in some cases their brains. Taking away their ability due to injury, they do not have much. Therefore pay college athletes and academics will enhance, overall income will elevate, and less rules of the NCAA will be broken. Have you ever heard of Derrick Rose, The Fab Five, or Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes? They are all people and programs who have violated NCAA rules and regulations in the pursuit of what they believed they were entitled – money. Derrick Rose now plays for the Chicago Bulls; he was drafted as number one in the 2008 NBA Draft. He was awarded the rookie of the year award in 2009, all NBA first team in 2011, and most valuable player in 2011. Rose went to the University of Memphis, and in …show more content…

The National Collegiate Athletic Association, or the NCAA, is the House of Representatives for sports. They oversee 23 different sports at over 1,200 colleges (Brown). So, they should be the ones to decide how much each athlete is compensated. How are college athletes supposed to enjoy the experience if they never have time to sit back and enjoy it? For example, Kirk Cousins the quarterback from Michigan State, practices every month, excluding July. In July he is just trying to catch a break. The $120,000 a year might cover the tuition, room, books, and a meal plan. This is where college athletes get into trouble, all the little expenses. If they have a car, they have to pay for a parking spot, gas, and maintenance for it. Even with a meal plan, it does not include food for in the dorms. That only includes breakfast, lunch, and
